Also a pianist, he emigrated to England in 1934 where he became a pupil
of Ralph Vaughan Williams and later performed on radio alongside Raymond Cohen the
concert violinist born in Manchester on 27th July 1919
He became a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music, Royal Manchester (now the Royal Northern) College of Music, and visiting Professor of Composition at Boston University in 1966. He was also noted for scoring several British horror films.
Of Jewish background, he emigrated to England in 1934 to escape the Nazis.
Studied composition with Paul Hindemith and piano with Leonid Kreutzer at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik.
