"You Are In Love" - Shannon Whitworth: High Tide (Ef Records)
Damn, playing a Gibson Sg never looked or sounded so sexy! Before the press folks dropped her new album on me, I didn't know of this compelling singer-songwriter formerly with the North Carolina outfit The Biscuit Burners. This is my pick hit from her new effort. Collaborating with bassist Bill Reynolds of Band of Horses has given her a chiming folk-rock vibe on her third solo effort. And tours with the Tedeschi Trucks Band and Chris Isaak certainly helped inform her "new" sound.
"The Corner Man" - Barrence Whitfield & The Savages: Dig the Savage Soul (Bloodshot)
He's back!!!! Punk-rockin' horn-honkin' R&B fury comin' at you like Iggy channeling Lil' Richard and Wicked Wilson Pickett. Everybody on the floor and do the worm! Now the Gator!!! Download it now!
"It Was My Season" - Okkervil River: The Silver Gymnasium (Ato)

Bodybuilding guru who built up a fitness empire and helped Arnold Schwarzenegger break into show business
Ben and Joe Weider turned bodybuilding into a worldwide phenomenon: part sport, part beauty pageant and part lifestyle. The younger brother, Ben, expanded their International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness, in their home town of Montreal, into a hugely profitable outfit and also became a philanthropist and renowned Napoleonic scholar. Joe, more flamboyant and a relentless self-promoter sometimes accused by rivals of harbouring a Napoleon complex, moved to California, where he kept the various Weider enterprises in the public eye. Joe has died aged 93.
It was Joe who, in 1968, brought a relatively unknown Austrian bodybuilder, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to Los Angeles. His repeated success in the Weiders' Mr Olympia contest led Schwarzenegger into show business and by starring in the film Stay Hungry (1976) and the documentary Pumping Iron (1977), he put himself, and bodybuilding, on the map.

Band of Horses will contend that the move from an indie to the major label system definitely works in some artists’ favor. It did for them. Since moving on from esteemed Sub Pop to a partnered drop with Fat Possum and Columbia, now squarely on Columbia, the rock troupe has seen a lot more sales action even without a big radio presence. Just this week, they earned their second-best charting and sales tally for new “Mirage Rock,” landing at No. 13 yesterday. Bassist Bill Reynolds, who’s been with the band for five years, admits that the move wasn’t popular with everybody,...

Lissie has seen some serious changes in her general concert experience over the last few years. She went from attending the first Bonnaroo as an audience member and playing to less-than-receptive Pizza Hut patrons in Colorado, to recording an album produced by Bill Reynolds of Band of Horses, and this year she finally claimed a well-deserved spot on the Bonnaroo line-up. Paste was lucky enough to catch a private performance backstage. Click the image to watch "In Sleep." Keep watching to catch an interview with Lissie. ...
