Men Up is a brilliant new dramatic feature that aired on the BBC over Christmas, but is still available to watch on iPlayer. It’s a stirring true story about the rise of viagra in Wales, and manages to find a brilliant tonality, whereby it’s light in parts, yet takes the matter incredibly serious, resulting in a film that studies male mental health in a unique, and important way.
To mark the release of this film, we had the pleasure in speaking to the four leading roles, and below you can find our chats with Iwan Rheon and Paul Rhys, and then with Steffan Rhodri and Phaldut Sharma. We discuss the film in great detail – and we speak about the Welsh, and how this project celebrates Welshness in a unique (and deserving!) way. Watch both interviews in their entirety, below.

He stars in two of this year’s most talked-about films and will be appearing in the BBC’s erectile comedy this Christmas. It’s a remarkable career resurgence for the Welsh actor, who didn’t really know what sex was till he was 24
When I arrive, slightly late, at the small restaurant near Paul Rhys’s home in central London, there he is, all in black, camouflaged against the dark walls, a thick journal in front of him. “I have to write every day or my head explodes,” he explains, putting it to one side. He has 30 years’ worth of material, which surely would make a brilliant memoir. I’m picturing witty asides about great co-stars, while he excoriates himself – and the tale of how a working-class Welsh boy became a posh actor, made some eccentric career decisions when Hollywood beckoned, and is now having a well-deserved career boost...

In America, we still like to pretend we don’t operate within an Old World-style class system. (Should you continue to labor under that delusion in the year of our lord 2023, we suggest you try taking a commercial airline flight some time.) Anyone can rise above their station, one bootstrap-tug at a time! England, however, has never tried to hide the fact that there was, is, and always has been a separation of haves and have-nots governed by toxic traditionalism, strict social strata, and fetishized notions of aristocracy.

En garde. A connoisseur of the onscreen battle, Ridley Scott stepped away from production on his anticipated Gladiator 2 to usher in the latest depiction of a power-hungry, pitifully-in-love Napoleon Bonaparte on Thursday night.
Napoleon, following the meteoric rise and fall of the 19th century French emperor — produced by Apple and theatrically distributed by Sony — premiered in London’s Leicester Square with frontman Joaquin Phoenix leading the troops on a rain-soaked red, white and blue carpet.
“It was such a shame not to be able to have show business at its biggest and its best for all those months [during the recently concluded writers and actors strikes], so it feels really fantastic to be back,” Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group, told The Hollywood Reporter.
It wasn’t long before Rothman was hailing Phoenix’s performance: “You couldn’t do a legendary figure without a legendary actor.”

Savannah, Georgia is an appropriate setting for a conversation with filmmaker Emerald Fennell about her newest film “Saltburn,” which follows an Oxford student who becomes enmeshed with a wealthy classmate’s eccentric family during a summer at their country estate. “It’s fully Gothic, especially at Halloween, so it’s really my favorite kind of place,” said the director to IndieWire during a recent interview. Though, in an interview setting that featured walls that alternated between hard, slate gray panels, and thin, beaming bars of fluorescent lighting, Fennell joked that the whole thing felt a bit like “a ‘John Wick’ interrogation.”
In town to accept the Spotlight Director Award at the Scad Savannah Film Festival, Fennell denied feeling a daunting amount of pressure around what to follow up her Academy Award-winning debut “Promising Young Woman” with. “I usually have a few things going on, but I don’t write them down.

Ridley Scott’s Napoleon opens in 1793 as a revolutionary rage courses throughout France. The camera tracks a ragged yet prideful Marie Antoinette (Catherine Walker) making her way toward her executioners as commoners hurl insults and tomatoes at her. This sequence kicks off the film with a propulsive energy that instantly keys us to the rowdy spirit of the times. Unfortunately, as soon as the guillotine drops, Napoleon shifts into traditional historical biopic mode, dutifully touching on major events like the Reign of Terror and the royalist insurrection, but only in the most compulsory, disinterested manner.
This Wikipedia rundown of sorts may just be a way to get Napoleon Bonaparte (Joaquin Phoenix) front and center a little earlier, but it’s a recurring problem in Scott’s film. In covering a period of nearly 30 years, Napoleon often feels rushed and overstuffed with incident. When we get to virtually any of the battle scenes,...

There are numerous laugh-out-loud moments in Saltburn, Emerald Fennell’s darkly comic and voyeuristic exploration of the British aristocracy being released on Friday by Amazon MGM Studios. Despite the hugely impressive efforts of Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant, however, most don’t belong to the lead cast, but to Paul Rhys.
As Duncan, the imperious and terrifying butler, the Welsh actor silently steals scenes from under the toffee noses of both those he dutifully serves at the Saltburn mansion (including Pike, Grant, Jacob Elordi and Alison Oliver) and the lower-class interloper he’s keeping a beady eye on (Barry Keoghan) each time he appears with hilariously po-faced magnificence.
And it’s a face that crops up again in another starry title landing late in the awards season corridor. In Ridley Scott’s much-anticipated biopic Napoleon, out Nov. 22 via Apple Original Films and Sony Pictures, Rhys plays Talleyrand, the crafty...

Noughties earworms? Check! Knife-sharp social commentary? Check! Carey Mulligan in a wig? Check! This can only mean one thing - Emerald Fennell is back back back, baby. And this time, the :a[Promising Young Woman]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/promising-young-woman/' target='blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} mastermind is taking aim at the British elite with :a[_Saltburn]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/emerald-fennell-saltburn-wild-world-lose-our-minds-exclusive/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}, which finds Barry Keoghan spending a sordid summer at Jacob Elordi’s decadent country home. Exclusive: Emerald Fennell likened making Saltburn, her dangerously dark comedy of class and lack of manners, “to taking your clothes off and exposing yourself.”
The filmmaker, who won an Oscar and BAFTAs for her debut feature Promising Young Woman, clarified that the “transgressive” material that she’s interested in working on means “that you have to spend a lot of your time as a director saying, ‘Trust me, I think this how we’re going to do it.’ And so then people watch it, which is so thrilling. But yeah, you are showing yourself. You are taking your clothes off and exposing yourself.”
She added that Saltburn, while made on a big canvas, is a ”very intimate“ movie.
She told me during a long conversation at the Telluride Film Festival, where the film had its world premiere, that this is a film “about needing and wanting and desire and sex.

The apparently ageless Ridley Scott is back with another historical epic. On Monday, Apple and Sony debuted the first trailer for Scott’s “Napoleon,” the 85-year-old filmmaker’s latest widescreen blockbuster.
The film reunites Scott with his “Gladiator” star Joaquin Phoenix for the first time since that Oscar-winning hit. “Joaquin is about as far from conventional as you can get. Not deliberately, but out of intuition,” Scott previously told Empire about his star. “That’s what makes him tick. If something bothers him, he’ll let you know.”
In that same interview, Scott said Phoenix basically rewrote the script to better align it with his take on the character. “We unpicked the film to help him focus on who Bonaparte was. I had to respect that, because what was being said was incredibly constructive. It made it all grow bigger and better,” Scott said.

"I am destined for greatness. But those in power will only see me as a sword." Apple has revealed the first official trailer for Napoleon, the next epic Ridley Scott movie about the iconic French emperor. You know his name, do you know his story? Ridley. Joaquin. Napoleon. An Apple Studios production in conjunction with Scott Free Productions, Napoleon is an original and personal look at Napoleon Bonaparte's origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. This looks as monumentally epic as Scott's other massive movies like Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven, diving full on into the history of the sordid French warrior and his many wicked ways. Movies about the infamous French military commander Napoleon Bonaparte have always been massive undertakings. After all, the wars and battles he unleashed were some of the biggest and deadliest in European military history. You can't exactly be frugal when adapting these battles to the big screen, and since they're such a significant part of Bonaparte's legacy, you shouldn't even think of skipping them. This is partially why Stanley Kubrick's biopic of the commander wound up in development hell and never found its way out during his lifetime.
However, it seems Ridley Scott has finally done what was previously thought to be nearly impossible: He has directed a biographical action epic based on Bonaparte's life, simply titled "Napoleon," and it is coming out later this year. Starring Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix as the commander, it marks the actor's first collaboration with Scott since their acclaimed team-up on 2000's "Gladiator." While...
