Director Roger Donaldson (Thirteen Days) has signed on to develop Abyssinia, with the intent to direct it for Intermedia and Pacifica Film Development, Variety reports. An epic love story framed by Mussolini's World War II invasion of Ethiopia, Abyssinia follows a safari guide who is forced to usher his ex-girlfriend and her husband to Egypt after they witness the Italian army's preparations to invade Abyssinia. The screenplay, by John Rice and Joe Batteer (The Last Samurai), is based on Bartle Bull's novel A Cafe on the Nile. Donaldson most recently directed Touchstone Pictures' The Recruit, a CIA thriller starring Al Pacino and Colin Farrell, currently slated for a January 2003 release.
