"We need more men like you." Disney+ has revealed an official trailer for a German mini-series titled Sam: A Saxon, also known as Sam - Ein Sachse in German. The series tells the extraordinary and exciting story of East Germany's first Black police officer. So this is pretty much Germany's BlacKkKlansman, but without the Spike Lee edge this time, and without any KKK - though still plenty of racists. Based on the true story of Sam Meffire's rise and fall in East Germany, this miniseries follows Sam's desperate search for a place he can call home, as he fights for recognition and justice in the wild years following Germany's reunification in 1989. Malick Bauer stars as Sam, with Tyron Ricketts, Svenja Jung, Luise von Finckh, Nyamandi Adrian, Paula Essam, Ivy Quainoo, Thorsten Merten, Martin Brambach, and Aristo Luis. This looks like something that will likely only appeal to Germans, but...

Exclusive: Jörg Winger and his Sam – A Saxon co-creator Tyron Ricketts believe the time is now right to tell the story of East Germany’s first Black policeman after a near-20-year period of shopping the project.
Disney+’s Sam – A Saxon, which was the streamer’s first German greenlight, spotlights Samuel Meffire, a former bricklayer who became the first elite East German policeman of African descent in the 1980s, where he went from diversity poster boy to being on the wrong side of the law. Scroll down for a trailer of the series that launches April 26.
Ricketts first met Meffire in 2002 and began shopping the project – initially as a feature – with Deutschland 83 co-creator Winger in 2006, but the pair believe German audiences have only become ready for the story in the past couple of years.
“The answer from buyers when we pitched it back then was always ‘I find it...

Exclusive: Deutschland 83 creator Jörg Winger has landed one of the first German-language series for Disney+ international streamer Star.
Through his Fremantle-backed production company, Big Window Productions, Winger will make Sam – A Saxon for the service, telling the true story of East Germany’s first Black police officer, Samuel Meffire.
The eight-part series — one of 10 Disney+ European shows exclusively revealed by Deadline today — traces Meffire’s extraordinary life after he became a media sensation and a symbol of modern society in the post-reunification 1990s.
But Meffire’s father was killed in a racially motivated attack and he eventually became disillusioned with his symbolic status, ending up behind bars himself just a few years after the Berlin Wall fell. Ultimately, however, Sam – A Saxon is a redemptive story, with Meffire now a reformed character, putting his experiences to good use.

Joerg Winger, producer and co-creator of the hit three-season “Deutschland” Cold War spy series, has launched a new outfit aimed at developing, producing and distributing high-end drama formats, including English-language and international productions.
Berlin-based Big Window Productions, set up between original “Deutschland” producer UFA Fiction and parent group Fremantle, will focus “on a small portfolio of extraordinary stories with high entertainment value, often inspired by real events,” Winger said.
Projects currently in development include a limited series about a scandalous Covid-19 outbreak and an English-language thriller set in Berlin.
“Because our focus is so much on international and English-language productions, the relationship with Fremantle makes a lot of sense,” Winger told Variety.
Winger will head Big Window with UFA execs Sebastian Werninger and Philipp Driessen, who, among other duties, oversee UFA Distribution.
A longtime UFA producer, Winger will now be doing less managing and more storytelling and showrunning. While he...

Ufa Fiction is partnering with actor-producer Tyron Ricketts and his Berlin-based Panthertainment to produce films and series for the global market focusing on stories from people of color.
Ufa Fiction producer Nataly Kudiabor will work with the Austrian-born Ricketts (right), one of Germany’s most successful black actors, on developing and overseeing projects Panthertainment acquires from directors and writers.
“Tyron and I have known each other for 20 years,” Kudiabor said. “As people of color, we have always dealt with the problem of on-screen representation. We want to give creative people – regardless of their origin or skin color – the opportunity to tell their own stories from their perspectives and we are convinced that we can reach a broad audience with them.”
She noted that “game changers” such as the films “Black Panther” and “Crazy Rich Asians” show how great the public’s need is for new narratives, which is likewise reflected...

With the recent #MeToo movement it should have been expected that there would soon be several movies based on the topic. And in the horror genre ‘rape revenge’ has been a popular sub genre since I Spit On Your Grave and perhaps hitting its peak recently with Revenge. That said, there will of course be many movies tackling the subject and 3 Lives is one of the most recent.
But 3 Lives tackles things in a slightly different way as the sexual abuse has happened well before our story starts and lead character Emma has now been abducted but is soon saved and on the run with the person who was jailed for attacking her fifteen years earlier. It’s, at least on the face of things,...
