When Henry Czerny started appearing in Hollywood movies, you could be forgiven for thinking he had a type: the suspicious government agent. In his first mainstream movie, Clear and Present Danger, Czerny portrayed American agent Robert Ritter opposite Harrison Ford’s Jack Ryan. Soon enough, he’d face off against another swaggering American star as another suspicious […]

The John Clark origin story comes with a tease for the next film in this budding franchise
(This article contains spoilers for “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse” on Amazon Prime Video)
We’ve had a number of Tom Clancy film adaptations over the past several decades — not to mention the “Jack Ryan” show on Amazon — but aside from a couple TV movies Jack Ryan was the main character in all of them. “Without Remorse” is the first time a major Tom Clancy screen project has left Ryan out of the mix completely, as it tells the origin story of John Clark, the protagonist of several novels and a supporting character in two previous movies.
Of course, in “Without Remorse” Michael B Jordan’s version of John Clark isn’t John Clark just yet. Here he’s John Kelly, and he’s caught up in a major government conspiracy that leaves his wife and unborn child dead,...

Photo: ‘Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse’/Amazon ‘Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse’ Directed by Stefano Sollima and based on Tom Clancy’s thriller novel ‘Without Remorse,’ ‘Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse’ follows an elite Navy Seal, Sr. Chief John Kelly (Michael B. Jordan), who finds himself seeking revenge against those who murdered his wife and unborn child. This origin story comes from the action hero John Clark who is one of the most influential characters in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series. With pure brutal revenge on his mind, John Kelly becomes an explosion of rage and violence against anyone and anything. After the Russian soldiers retaliated against John Kelly by murdering his pregnant wife, he joins forces with a female Seal Karen Greer (Jodie Turner-Smith), and the suspicious CIA agent Robert Ritter (Jamie Bell). This article contains Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse spoilers. You can find our spoiler-free review here.
For the most faithful Tom Clancy fans, it’s probably not the ending they anticipated. Amazon’s adaptation of the author’s John Clark origin story, Without Remorse, ends not with a justification for Cold War paranoia but instead with a greater fear of the enemy within. Defense Secretary Thomas Clay (Guy Pearce) swore to uphold the Constitution and American interests. But in the end, the only oath kept was the one Michael B. Jordan’s then-John Kelly made to his late wife Pam.
“Her name was Pam, and [I swore] you’re going to say it before you die.” And so Clay did in his final moments after John drove the secretary’s vehicle off a D.C. bridge and into the cold waters below, drowning the old man and making it look like a suicide.

“Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse” is a lively formulaic action-hero origin story, dunked in combat grunge, that demonstrates how a resourceful lead actor can bend and heighten the meaning of a commercial thriller. In the opening sequence, which looks like an outtake from “Zero Dark Thirty” shot in the rubble of “Full Metal Jacket,” John Kelly (Michael B. Jordan), the leader of a team of U.S. Navy SEALs, heads up a mission in Aleppo to rescue a CIA operative who’s been taken hostage. The enemy combatants turn out to be Russian ex-military forces — which is not only a surprise, but something the team’s CIA overseer, the weaselly Robert Ritter (Jamie Bell), is trying to keep from them. Back in the States, several of the SEALs who were part of the mission are killed, execution-style, by Russian nationals. The assassins go after Kelly, too, gunning down his pregnant wife,...

Stefano Sollima, the Italian director of “Without Remorse,” starring Michael B. Jordan as Navy Seal John Kelly, says he likes to “tell stories that are about real humans; not superheroes.” Sollima’s latest film, an adaptation of the Tom Clancy novel, finds the “Black Panther” star pursuing justice and unleashing hell in a high-octane spectacle that launches globally on Amazon Prime on April 30.
Realism has been Sollima’s signature since breaking out internationally with naturalistic Neapolitan mob TV series “Gomorrah,” followed by hyper-violent but humanistic “Sicario: Day of the Soldado,” his first major studio feature, and cocaine-smuggling skein “ZeroZeroZero,” which tracks a shipment of drugs from multiple perspectives across three continents.
When Jordan’s then-producer Alana Mayo contacted Sollima about directing “Without Remorse,” he asked her to find out if “Michael B” was “ready to shoot a film in which all the action is actually done by him,” says the director.

Tom Clancy’s best-selling novels have been adapted into a blockbuster film franchise, and there’s a new installment coming soon. The former insurance agent-turned-novelist who died in 2013, was known for recurring themes of espionage, Soviet operatives, military-inspired storylines, corrupt government agencies, and other makings of a gripping action film.
Jack Ryan, Clancy’s biggest novel-to-film character, is a CIA analyst whose various missions have been the premise for most of the films that his books were adapted from. Ryan was also the lead of the first novel he ever sold (“The Hunt for Red October”). Several actors have taken on the role of Ryan including Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, and,...

“He is more dangerous and effective than any man we had in the field,” Kelly’s friend and former Seal team member Lt. Commander Karen Greer says in the trailer.
Kelly, meanwhile, is all business: “There is something inside me that I can’t turn off, there is a part of me that wont stop for anything. No remorse.”
Kelly was previously played on screen by Willem Dafoe in 1994’s “Clear and Present Danger,” and by Liev Schreiber in 2002’s “The Sum of All Fears.”

Step aside John Krasinski, Michael B. Jordan is the new Tom Clancy hero in town.
The first trailer for “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse” starring blockbuster star and the Internet’s boyfriend Jordan has dropped. The stunt-filled spectacle is filled with Clancy tropes, including the quiet war hero who unleashes his demons for justice. The action looks next level, especially the kicker where Jordan’s character is seen interrogating someone in a fully-on-fire car, Jack Ryan could never.
Jordan plays Navy Seal John Kelly in the film, which is the origin story of John Clark, one of the most popular characters in Clancy’s Jack Ryan franchise. After Russian soldiers kill Kelly’s family — including his pregnant wife — due to his role in a secret operation against them, he goes on a mission seeking justice for their murders. In the era of fast computers and fast internet, how can the techno thriller cope?
This article contains a spoiler for Mission: Impossible.
There’s a moment in the midst of Brian De Palma’s terrific Mission: Impossible film – the best one of the series still for me – where Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt has fished a floppy disk out of a bin. It’s been dumped there by Jean Reno’s duplicitous character, believed it not to contain the missing half of the Noc list. The Noc list that’s the MacGuffin for the movie, that Hunt and his Imf team are trying to stop falling into the wrong hands.
As it happens, it’s an old-fashioned switcheroo that’s been done, and the disk in the bin does contain the Noc list information. And whilst I didn’t appreciate it at the time, I do wonder if Mission: Impossible sat,...

An intelligent, dense political thriller in the middle of summer? We visit Harrison Ford in Tom Clancy's Clear And Present Danger...
This article contains spoilers for, er, Clear And Present Danger.
How many times have you walked out of seeing a big summer blockbuster movie, and felt like you'd been treated like a grown-up? Christopher Nolan movies, whether you like them or not, treat you with that level of respect. But when it comes to major thrillers, there's generally something about them where you feel you've been shortchanged.
It's why it puzzles me that Clear And Present Danger doesn't get a lot more love. From the day I saw it for the first time back in 1994, and on every viewing since, I've really loved this film. I love that it isn't afraid of a dense plot, isn't afraid of putting a big movie star on the poster yet finds time for supporting characters,...

If Mrs. Lovejoy of The Simpsons was watching Falling Skies this week, she can rest easy: someone was definitely thinking of the children.
A lot of people were, in fact, as kid safety was on the minds of all 2nd Mass adults in "Sanctuary, Part 1." Unfortunately, that didn't stop them from making a poor decision.
I knew Terry Clinton couldn't be trusted, and not just because he was portrayed by Henry Czerny, forever ingrained in my mind as Robert Ritter, the man who tried to frame Jack Ryan in 1994's Clear and Present Danger.
His appearance just seemed too fortunate and random. It also took place just moments after Weaver chastised Tom for a lack of awareness. The Captain is gonna be awfully embarrassed when he discovers how his old pal fooled him here. Also, awfully angry.
The episode set up both an intriguing moral dilemma and a suspenseful cliffhanger.
