- He has three children. Zoe (b. 1982) from his relationship with Eily Doolan; and Simone (b. 1986) and Max (b. 1989) from his current marriage to Odette Gleeson.
- He was British Designer of the Year in 1993.
- He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2002 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to the fashion industry.
- He was educated at CBS, Hong Kong. He then went to Banstead Hospital, Surrey, England where he studied psychiatric nursing and qualified in 1971. After that he studied Fashion at the Croydon School of Art in London. His graduation collection brought him to the attention of the Irish Trade Board and in 1978 he moved to Ireland.
- In 1983 he started the Chinatown label with his wife and business partner, Odette Gleeson but this business closed in 1988. In 1987 he moved to Milan, where he produced his own line for Reflections in 1988-9. He returned to Ireland, under licence for two labels, Chinatown and John Rocha, for Brown Thomas.
- In 1995 he set up a new studio in Dublin and opened his own shop. In 1997 he launched a range of contemporary crystal with Waterford Glass and in 1998 he opened a shop in London's Sloane Avenue. Known for simple tailored shapes, soft layers and innovative use of fabric, he designs for both men and women.
