He is best known for his performances (and recordings) of Bach's passions (as the Evangelist), and works of Benjamin Britten.
He eventually attended the Guildhall School of Music in London, which launched his vocal career.
He sang as a child, and even made a recording. Although his parents encouraged his interest in music, he took a degree in agriculture and became a farm manager.
