A delegation of Scottish CEOs came by our offices recently. They were on a four-day tour of U.S. companies -- Apple, Cisco, and so forth. Their goal was both information and inspiration, about how best to keep their businesses, large and small, moving forward.
One gentleman asked me the same question several times: How do you decide what to cover in the magazine? Each time he asked, I answered with a story -- why we put Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook on our cover two years ago, or boarder Shaun White earlier this year, or the confluence of events, unlikely to be repeated anytime soon, that led to our 19,000-word opus last June on China's resource grab in Africa (which has earned accolades, including an Overseas Press Club Award and a National Magazine Award nomination).

Another piece of the DreamWorks-Paramount divorce puzzle -- identifying those Paramount films that DreamWorks will have an option to stay involved in -- has become clearer.
As part of the studios' separation agreement, projects remaining on Melrose Avenue that the new DreamWorks will have an option to co-finance and co-distribute (through its deal with Universal) include "No Man's Land"; the Demetri Martin-penned comedy "Will"; "Love Me or Leave Me"; "Blood and Thunder," about 19th century adventurer Kit Carson; "Follies"; "Little Britain"; "The Rivals," with a screenplay by Robin Swicord; "Dominion," produced by Nina Jacobson; "Spydust"; and an untitled Diablo Cody-scripted comedy from an original Steven Spielberg idea.
Previously reported in this batch were "Matt Helm," "Imaginary Friends," "Children of the Lamp" and a President Lincoln biopic scripted by Tony Kushner that was in the Paramount development fold before Spielberg showed an interest.
Paramount plans to distribute 20 films in 2009.

Paramount has picked up the screen rights to Dave Roman's graphic novel Agnes Quill: An Anthology of Mystery. Thor Freudenthal (Hotel for Dogs) will direct from a script by Evan Spiliotopoulos. Variety reports that Agnes Quill is "the first acquisition for Adam Goodman since transitioning from DreamWorks."
Publisher Slave Labor Graphics describes Agnes Quill: An Anthology of Mystery as follows:
"For Agnes Quill, talking to the dead is the easiest part of her life. As the heir to her great-grandfather’s detective business, the sixteen-year-old Agnes must solve mysteries in the haunted, cobble-stoned and foggy city Legerdemain. It’s a lot of responsibility for a teenaged girl, but Agnes is devoted to continuing her family’s legacy. As she solves the strange cases her clients bring to her, Legerdemain’s dearly departed citizens help, hinder, or just plain annoy her. Working with, against or in spite of these ghosts,...

I don't know about you, but I was sure hoping that Hollywood would give us more movies about women and their love of shoes. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Beth Harbison's Shoe Addicts Anonymous is heading to the big screen. The plot is exactly as you'd imagine it -- four women who meet up and chat about shoes. Tapping into the Sex and the City sort of scenario, there's the trophy wife of a senator, a phone sex operator, a nanny, and the lead, a woman in massive consumer debt. Actress and writer Laurie Taylor-Williams has been tapped to adapt the novel.
And while these women join over love of shoes, a couple might be heading for the dumping bin for a classically stupid reason. The Hollywood Reporter also posts that we've got a new wedding-centric comedy on the way called The Big Question. Written by TV writer Andrew Lenchewski...

Thor Freudenthal, of the upcoming Hotel for Dogs, will direct this adaptation, while Evan Spiliotopoulos, of Art Heist and Terra, will write the screenplay. The graphic novel tells the story of Agnes Quill, who upon turning 16 inherits an estate, and the ability to see and communicate with the dead, from her grandfather. This is one of the first projects producer Adam Goodman has started since DreamWorks split with Paramount. Sounds interesting? Agnes Quill is the story of a teenage detective, the haunted city she lives in, the strange cases she solves, and the ghosts who help, hinder, or just plain annoy her. Set in Legerdemain a congested, fog-filled, cobblestone-paved Victorian city built around a cemetery the size of Central Park Agnes adventures include confrontations ...

Paramount Pictures has acquired screen rights to Agnes Quill: An Anthology Of Mystery, a graphic novel by Dave Roman. The Gn's title character turns 16 and inherits from her grandfather an estate and an ability to see and communicate with the dead. In a subplot similar to Peter Jackson's The Frighteners, she uses the ghosts to help her solve mysteries. Thor Freudenthal is attached to direct, and Evan Spiliotopoulos is writing the script. Spiliotopoulos comes out of animation and most recently adapted graphic novel "The Last Call" for Universal. It looks like this might be a children's story, but we'll keep an eye out to see how dark they go with her seeing the dead.
