Tribeca Festival Reschedules Robert De Niro Celebration “De Niro Con” to Coincide With 2024 Festival
The Tribeca Festival has once again rescheduled its “De Niro Con” celebration of festival co-founder Robert De Niro.
The event will now take place from June 14-16 to coincide with the 2024 Tribeca Festival, set to run from June 5-16 in New York City.
The fan event in celebration of De Niro’s 80th birthday was originally announced at the 2023 Tribeca Festival, during a star-studded private ceremony at the Tribeca Grill, and set to take place from Sept. 29-Oct. 1, 2023. But it was postponed until April 2024 amid the writers and actors strikes last year.
The latest delay, the festival said, was done to leverage the festival’s expanded footprint and reach, and make sure anyone attending the festival could also participate in the De Niro celebration.
De Niro turned 80 on Aug. 17, 2023. He has since earned awards acclaim, including an Oscar nomination, for his role in Killers of the Flower Moon, for frequent collaborator Martin Scorsese.

Tribeca Films will debut with six new titles to be announced this spring, ahead of the 2024 Tribeca Festival in June, and plans to acquire 25 films a year from top festivals including Sundance, Berlin, SXSW, Cannes, Toronto and Tribeca.
“The Tribeca Festival has always bet big on independent films and for more than two decades, has championed emerging filmmakers by providing a global platform to showcase their projects. As the film industry evolves, we recognize the need to better support independent filmmakers in today’s crowded streaming and distribution market,” said Tribeca co-founder and CEO Jane Rosenthal.

As Miami Art Week and lead fair Art Basel Miami Beach wraps up its 21st year, by night there were fashion events, popups, concerts, dining debuts, cocktail soirees and philanthropy moments to match and exceed every by-day art buy. During the week-long festivities — in which the Magic City is taken over by celebrities, musicians, artists and collectors — star chefs, performers, credit card companies and fashion, liquor and watch brands were all heavily in the mix alongside dealers and collectors. For some, it was quite possible to spend an entire week traversing from the beach to Brickell and from Downtown to the Design District attending art-adjacent parties and never even seeing any of the fairs.
Here are the highlights of what happened around town when everyone was not looking at art.

When it comes to how big a movie experience can get, Sphere has answered that question once and for all: The sky is the limit. The first film to play in the enormous, immersive new space in Las Vegas, Darren Aronofsky’s “Postcard From Earth,” has plenty of blue-screen, so to speak — that is, vast skies that stretch to fill the dome that towers 366 feet over the venue’s floor level. The 50-minute movie takes you into the reaches of space, too, with a wrap-around science-fiction narrative that is apropos for Sphere’s wrap-around screen. But “let’s get small” is an operative motif, too, as the proprietary Big Sky cameras zoom in on objects as tiny as a praying mantis.
Aronofsky’s films always have a lot more on their minds than bedazzlement, and “Postcard From Earth” is no exception, as it turns out the journey by a pair...

Former studio executive and prolific producer Paula Weinstein is leaving Tribeca Enterprises, where she’s been chief content officer for the past decade, to jump into political work and help “as many voices as possible be heard.”
“I don’t want to sit on the sidelines and rail about everything. I really want to jump in, fully, into the campaigns. Both statewide and national campaigns,” she tells Deadline. “It just feels very much like a moment…between the climate, and book banning and everything else that I don’t need to go into.”
In a memo to staff this morning, Tribeca CEO Jane Rosenthal said Weinstein will “devote her efforts to fighting for the preservation and advancement of human and women’s rights, and most urgently the upcoming elections.” She will also continue to consult for Tribeca. Next summer’s festival, dates just announced, would have been her 12th.

Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller once collaborated for the 2000 blockbuster comedy hit Meet the Parents. But if it wasn’t for De Niro, the film might not have spawned any more sequels.
Robert De Niro made sure Ben Stiller would do a ‘Meet the Parents’ sequel Robert De Niro | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Stiller’s version of Meet the Parents saw the comedian portray a devoted boyfriend trying to win over his girlfriend’s parents. De Niro portrayed the girlfriend’s strict father. At this point in his career, De Niro was seldom seen in comedies. He appeared in the lighthearted romp thanks to the film’s producer Jane Rosenthal, who first made De Niro aware of the script. Still, the Oscar-winner had a few misgivings about the story before fully committing to the project.

The 23rd edition of the Tribeca Festival will unspool June 5-16, 2024, in New York City, organizers said today, and submissions are now open.
Festival Director Cara Cusumano has been promoted to SVP of Programming and José F. Rodriguez to Senior Programmer.
The fest, presented by Okx, and founded in 2001, has expanded over the years from film into television, immersive, games and audio storytelling and also leans heavily on music and live events, which may be helpful next year as ongoing Hollywood strikes by actors and writers slow production on U.S. projects.
“Tribeca is a global platform for storytellers to showcase art that speaks with purpose. As the industry has changed, we have evolved to be inclusive of all forms of storytelling,” said Tribeca CEO and co-founder Jane Rosenthal. “We’re proud to be the launchpad for the next generation of artists. With 1993’s A Bronx Tale celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, two things are for sure. One, not every beloved movie does well at the box office. Two, if she doesn’t lean over and lift the car lock, dump her. But Robert De Niro has more to say on the former, as A Bronx Tale almost cost him his future as a director.
Speaking at the Tribeca Festival – which Robert De Niro co-founded as the Tribeca Film Festival as a way to bring prosperity back to New York after 9/11 – the actor/director recalled A Bronx Tale peaking at #7 and only grossing around $17 million at the box office. “How could you not be disappointed? You do all this work for it. At the same time, I was lucky to be able to make the movie I made.” He added, “I never got asked to do movies after that,” although, more accurately,...

A Bronx Tale, Robert De Niro’s 1993 directorial debut, starred as the Tribeca Festival’s closing gala with the famed actor acknowledging that he never got asked to direct again following the film’s inauspicious box office debut.
“I was lucky to be able to make the movie. I made it the way I wanted to make it. I didn’t compromise at all. And I took longer to do [it] than was scheduled. And I had a lot of pressure…So I never got asked to do movies after that. That’s okay,” he said, sitting down with Chazz Palminteri in an interview with New Yorker editor David Remnick after a screening of the newly remastered film.
Remick reminded him he’d also directed The Good Shepherd. “I did The Good Shepherd. But that was another uphill battle,” De Niro said.

“Eric Larue” is the directorial debut of actor Michael Shannon. He’s only behind the camera this time. The aftermath tale of a young boy’s shooting rampage deals straight ahead with the families of the people affected. An often light and breezy costar of rom-coms, Judy Greer here delivers a powerhouse leading performance. She’s had films at Tribeca before, but she’s chatting with us this week from Chicago where she’s on stage in “Another Marriage” at the Steppenwolf. She’s candid, funny and has real affection for the new director. And she says it’s never too early to think about awards season. But we begin with her downtown New York professional roots.

“Trump was indicted yesterday — and again — as Paula likes to remind me,” said Jane Rosenthal as she kicked off her speech Friday afternoon at the ninth annual Chanel Through Her Lens luncheon. Twenty-one years ago, Robert De Niro co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival with Jane Rosenthal. While its dates sandwich it between more prestigious festivals like Cannes and Venice, film fans can’t sleep on the festival, especially because of its world premieres. And Tribeca is also a major event that helps kick off the summer months in NYC. During the opening night celebration, Martin Scorsese and New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated that De Niro “revitalized the city after 9/11” and that “the Tribeca festival is an indomitable institution and beacon of the city.”

The Tribeca Festival brings its unusual brand of film, music, TV, games, reunions and talks, audio and immersive storytelling to New York City this week, a festival for the city and the latest stop for the film community after a short post-Cannes break. Today’s opening may face unexpected headwinds as New York suffers a sudden, sharp deterioration of air quality due to wildfires in Canada.
The fest, which runs June 7-18, kicks off Wednesday with Kiss the Future, a documentary by Nenad Cicin-Sain produced by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Sarah Anthony. It closes with a 30th anniversary screening of A Bronx Tale, produced by and starring, respectively, Tribeca co-founders Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro. Just before the fest kickoff, NYC Mayor Eric Adams — who is attending opening night — will make an arts- and culture-related announcement with the actor.
