5.5 King of Norway
It’s hard not to see this season in a valedictory light, offering a pattern of reunions, score-settling and closure as characters, willingly or otherwise, attempt to find and secure a sense of closure before the shutters finally come down. It comes across like the closing of a circle, or rather several interlinked circles, that bring characters back to where they came from, again whether they like it or not. Such a view places this episode’s reunion of Nucky and Chalky in a similar context to that of Nucky and Margaret last week. In both cases, the exiled come to Nucky, surprising him by their unannounced return. In both cases too, Nucky takes the opportunity to nurture his sentimentality, seeking sweet reminiscences with Margaret and...

5.4 Cuanto
These days, Al Capone is almost as famous for his eventual conviction for tax evasion as he is for running around Chicago like some sort of gangster prince. It’s a fact that is easily remembered for its apparent incongruity –all those murders, the protection rackets, the bootlegging and Uncle Sam could only get him on the sort of charge that would generally be used to bring a harassed and debt-laden accountant before the beak. As Cuanto shows us, it’s not as though Capone’s activities or lifestyle were kept as quiet facts known only to a select few members of the underground. He was an outlaw in plain sight, bearer of the appropriate nom de crime ‘Scarface’ and inspirer of Hollywood crime movies and the documentary films that he gloried in at noisy private screenings.

For Narratively, Carolyn Rothstein revisits the kids from Kids, 20 years later, in “Legends Never Die.” Chloe Sevigny and Rosario Dawson are stars, Justin Pierce and Harold Hunter have passed away, and the others are living their lives in diverse and at times unexpected ways. As her interviewees tell it, Kids was not just about people but a city: The kids say the film was accurate, except for the most fantastical stuff. There’s no denying they weren’t sober during filming. Even the scene with Javier Nunez, at fourteen, by far the youngest of the skate crew, and three other little …...
