Distinguished-looking character actor, on stage from 1900. Primarily active in films by the 1920's, specialising in playing professional men: doctors, bankers, consuls, industrialists, barristers, and the like.
His activity in movies dropped off during wartime.
From 1925 on he concentrated again on the theater. Only in the 30's he appeared again in front of the camera and impersonated impressive support roles in many well-known movies.
The film industry offered him only seldom rewarding work. In the new GDR he took part in the movies "Mathilde Möhring" (1950) and in the fairy-tale movies "Rumpelstilzchen" (1955) and "Der gestiefelte Kater" (1955).
