The unprecedented era of science fiction and high-octane action that defined the turn of the 20th century with the Wachowski siblingsʼ film franchise The Matrix set in motion a predestined narrative for the leading star Keanu Reeves. What the Wachowskis did for Reevesʼ career in 1999 slowly led to his intro into kung-fu in the John Wick franchise which in turn helped the Wachowskisʼ return in the fourth Matrix sequel, bringing the director and actorʼs Hollywood stories full circle.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021) [Credit: Warner Bros.]However, the actorʼs effusive beginnings in the sci-fi genre that made Reeves a global star would mean very little if his skills picked up over the years refused to prove useful when the directors needed it most. As such, the martial arts and gun-fu training that defined every muscle memory of The Matrix lead kicked into high gear when he was called onto the sets of The Matrix Resurrections.

James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” swept the 21st annual Ves Awards Wednesday night in an unprecedented wave of dominance in every category, winning nine of its record-breaking 14 nominations, including the top photoreal feature, and the newest category, The Emerging Technology Award, for its innovative water toolset.
Although the prestigious visual effects honorary society has not been a reliable Oscar bellwether in recent years — picking the VFX winner only twice in the last six years — this now looks like a lock for the “Avatar” sequel.
Hosted by Patton Oswalt at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” (from Netflix) — the favorite to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar — won the top animation trophy and took home three awards; Amazon’s “Thirteen Lives” snagged the supporting prize, and Amazon Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” grabbed the episodic prize and also took home three awards.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” came out on top at the Visual Effects Society’s 2023 Ves Awards, held Wednesday evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
The James Cameron epic set a Ves record this year with 14 nominations in nine different categories, and it set a record for wins by coming out on top in every category in which it was nominated. By contrast, the original 2009 “Avatar” received 10 nominations and won five awards. The previous record for wins by a film was set by “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” at the first Ves Awards in 2003, when it won eight awards. (The show had fewer awards then than it does now.)

"Avatar: The Way of Water" is close to a worldwide box office total of 2 billion dollars, according to Box Office Mojo at the time of this writing. The further adventures of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the family they've created on Pandora have captured moviegoers' imaginations. It sounds like we'll be getting the promised sequels from director James Cameron. Whatever you think of the story and the high frame rate, which I personally found incredibly distracting, it's tough to deny that the visual effects in this film are groundbreaking and spectacular.
The first film really drove home the fact that 3D wasn't dead, and this one did the same, despite some pronounced stick-poking-style effects in the beginning and nausea-inducing moments early on. It's shockingly easy to forget that the creatures we're watching on screen aren't really there and that the actors just don't look like that. Though...

Suffice it to say that Avatar: The Way of Water commanded the Visual Effects Society’s attention. James Cameron box office-smash sequel scored a record 14 nominations for the 2023 Ves Awards, which were announced today.
Helped by three noms in the Emerging Technology category, Disney’s The Way of Water topped the single-year noms haul by Disney+’s The Mandalorian in 2021. It also shattered the old high-water mark for films, set by — no big surprise here — the original Avatar, which amassed 11 noms in 2010.

Black Adam is finally out, and if you haven’t seen it, do. While the first thing that separates the character from a lot of the other superhero movies in the genre, is that, for starters, he’s not a hero. He’s an antihero in its near purest form. Dwayne Johnson, master of shameless self promotion has been touting the greatness of this film for a while now, and this time, beyond a shadow of a doubt, he’s right. And what Black Adam believes is right comes from a place of ultimate struggle… and sacrifice.

First Man, the moonshot tale of Neil Armstrong in the launchpad years before his historic voyage won the Academy Award for visual effects, topping a field of eclectic competitors that included the superhero epic Avengers: Infinity War, a Star Wars film directed by Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg’s pop-culture collage Ready Player One.
First Man visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert — who also won an Oscar for Blade Runner 2049 –– led an unique effort on First Man, which achieved its evocative recreation of the Apollo 11 mission by melding digital effects, meticulously created miniatures, archival footage, vintage filming techniques and colossal Led screens to re-create the 1969 space mission and the historic ramp-up to it.

The 91st Annual Academy Awards are finally here, and who knows how they’re going to play out? Ironically like many of the films it’ll be honoring, the yearlong buildup and campaign for the event has been plagued by backstage controversies – with the hiring and prompt resignation of would-be Mc Kevin Hart to the debacles concerning its runtime, it looks like the host-less Oscars won’t be giving out jet skis for shortest acceptance speech this year.
With that in mind, the purpose of the Academy Awards is to celebrate 2018’s greatest movies; and following the trend of the show’s last several seasons, this year’s nominees are in themselves historic, not only for their diversity, but also for the genres and studios that they represent.

“First Man” has had a rocky road to the Oscars, but there is a good chance it walks away with the statuette for Best Visual Effects. The Neil Armstrong biopic is the only film in the Best Visual Effects race this year with additional nominations outside of the category, and recent trends show how often this helps films win. Yet, “First Man” would actually be bucking a different trend, in that its effects are less showy compared to most Visual Effects winners. The question is whether its realistic effects can win over the fantastical CGI showcases in “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Christopher Robin,” “Ready Player One” and “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

The “Fast” franchise is all about cars and family, and cyberterrorist Cipher (Charlize Theron) destroys both in the spectacular New York car chase in “The Fate of the Furious,” when she forces Dom (Vin Diesel) to go rogue and betray his family.
Director F. Gary Gray (“Straight Outta Compton,” “The Italian Job”) turns the notion of fast cars against the Furious in the New York sequence. Cold-as-ice Cipher hacks hundreds of self-driving “zombie” vehicles and creates a Times Square demolition derby in order to stop an impenetrable limo with the suitcase she is chasing.
Meanwhile, Cipher manipulates Dom into apprehending the suitcase, as his gang is powerless to stop him. The chase, therefore, contains a two-part narrative that underscores Cipher’s power and Dom’s street-racing prowess.
The dirty little secret: All of the car crashing occurred in Cleveland and only the tie-ins were filmed in Manhattan and on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Last night, the Visual Effects Society handed out their awards at their annual gathering. It was mainly a good night for The Jungle Book, which took the top prize, known as Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature. It beat back Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, while at the Academy Awards, it’ll be up against Deepwater Horizon, Doctor Strange, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It was an expected win, but one that was eagerly awaited to try and figure out the Oscar category of Best Visual Effects. The Jungle Book ended up with five prizes in total, easily besting the rest of the bunch. As mentioned above, this top award ties directly into the Visual Effects category at the Oscars. Nine out of the...

“The Jungle Book” is on its way to VFX Oscar gold after getting five Ves nods Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton. “Rogue One,” the “Star Wars” standalone, however, came away empty-handed after receiving seven nominations.
Innovative Disney hybrid “The Jungle Book” won for outstanding feature, King Louie’s animated performance, virtual cinematography, effects simulations, and compositing.
Laika’s Oscar-nominated “Kubo and the Two Strings” earned VFX animation props, “Deepwater Horizon” took supporting VFX and model work for Industrial Light & Magic, and “Game of Thrones: Battle of the Bastards” continued its TV dominance.
Disney’s “Moana” grabbed two animation awards (created environment and simulations), Pixar won for Hank’s animated performance, and Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” won for its New York City environment
The Ves Visionary Award went to Victoria Alonso, producer and Marvel Studios Evp of physical production. Five-time Oscar winner Ken Ralston (“Return of the Jedi” and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?...

If you’re as pumped up for director F. Gary Gray’s Fast 8 as much as I am, you’re gonna want to check out these two new featurettes for the film. The first is called “Zombie Cars” and it features horde of cars driving off of a parking structure and landing on a bunch of other cars on the street. J.D. Schwalm, Special Effects Supervisor on the film explains:
"We have seven cars falling from the parking structure, and each one of them is aiming at a motorcade here. We have to pull these cars at an exact speed, and we're doing that using the winch on the crane. Each car comes out in succession to land on the vehicles on the road here. Obviously, there's no one in them because they're about to be impaled by 3000-pound lawn darts."
The second video gives us a 15 minute tour...

12 Years a Slave continues to be the leader in the clubhouse when it comes to nominations. After leading the Spirit Award nominations it now leads the International Press Academy's (Ipa) 2013 Satellite Award nominations with a total of ten noms, followed by American Hustle and Gravity, each with eight nominations. The top five nominees were rounded out by Rush with seven nominations and Inside Llewyn Davis and Saving Mr. Banks with six nominations each. The Satellites, however, are an interesting bunch. As you can see there are several nominations in each category, leaving pretty much no stone unturned. I guess you could say no nomination for Octavia Spencer (Fruitvale Station) is a surprise and, in my personal opinion, with such a large field of nominees I'd like to see Joaquin Phoenix (Her) get a nomination, but that certainly isn't going to be a film for everyone even though Arcade Fire was...
