With Sundance having premiered Thorsten Schütte’s Eat That Question: Frank Zappa in His Own Words just a couple of years back, perhaps they’ll not want to feature more Zappa, but this docu project that Alex Winter has been financing and working on for a while now has got a huge fanbase. We’re not sure where he might be in the process (sorting out the archive of music and visual elements made available by the family) so we consider this our hail Mary pass prediction of our 100 set.

The 64th San Sebastian Film Festival, which ran from September 16 to 24, closed out its celebrations by announcing its winners on Saturday night. The top prize, known as the Golden Shell, was awarded to Feng Xiaogang’s drama “I Am Not Madame Bovary.” Its lead, Fan Bingbing, also took home the Best Actress award that night.
“I have a lot of experience and a lot of habits. These habits can cage you. When I started this film, I tried to set these habits aside and try to work as if it were my directorial debut and do something courageous. I knew it was very risky,” Feng said, per The Hollywood Reporter. “I didn’t know if it was the right thing to do, but today the San Sebastian Film festival gave me the answer with this prize for the best film.”

This documentary about the oddball musician may not satisfy completists, but it’s still a fascinating run-through of Zappa’s greatest – and weirdest – moments
My wife can handle my snoring and my tendency to forget to do the dishes, but all bets are off when I drag out my Frank Zappa albums. To the great many people who just can’t stand the man’s music, it is an antic mess of arpeggios, endless guitar solos, puerile baby noises, irritating musique concrète and vulgar lyrics. (I’ll agree to a lot of this, and that’s coming from a diehard fan.) German director Thorsten Schütte’s documentary Eat That Question: Frank Zappa In His Own Words would finally, I think, get her to understand just what it is that I love about the foul-mouthed mustachioed freak. That is, if I could ever convince her to watch it.
Like Steven Soderbergh’s documentary on Spalding Gray,...

Update: Eat That Question – Frank Zappa In His Own Words has gone to the Sony fold in a sub-$1m worldwide deal with Submarine excluding France and Germany ahead of Monday’s world premiere.
Thorsten Schütte’s Documentary Premieres selection uses rare archival footage taken from Zappa’s 30-year career in entertainment. Particular emphasis is placed on his eccentric manner of dealing with the media.
The film has also been pre-selected for Germany’s Lola film awards and will screen in the Berlinale next month.
Spc brokered the deal with Josh Braun, Dan Braun and David Koh of Submarine on behalf of the filmmakers.
Estelle Fialon of Les Films du Poisson (France) and Jochen Laube of Ufa Films (Germany), produced. Arte France and Swr co-produced.

As Sundance and Slamdance prepare to kick off this week some insiders have predicted there could be a surge of activity from digital platforms besides Netflix and Amazon Studios.
The latter two are expected to be active – and indeed have already taken a few Park City titles off the table – yet there is talk of other well-capitalised companies mulling over a splashy entry into the acquisitions arena.
The Sundance Film Festival runs from January 21-31.
Nimble digital platforms challenge traditional buyers
Faced with sharp digital rivals unencumbered by the need to spend on costly P&A and plugged into transactional data that enables them to target audiences with forensic precision, theatrical buyers will need to be on their toes.
The distribution landscape is crowded and unforgiving, yet creative marketing campaigns can pave the way to success.
Among others, A24 did it with Ex Machina and Fox Searchlight reaped rewards with its 2015 Sundance pick-up Brooklyn, earning Oscar nods...
