Power Trip‘s 2019 tour supporting High on Fire was one of their last outings before the tragic passing of frontman Riley Gale.
Heavy Consequence attended one of the final dates on that tour, a late November show in Brooklyn, and got to witness the captivating power Gale possessed onstage. Less than a year later, Gale died at the young age of 34.

Jet frontman Nic Cester revealed in a recent interview that he auditioned to be the singer of AC/DC in 2016. The job eventually went to Axl Rose, but Cester has quite a story to tell his grandkids one day.
Twenty years ago, Jet were the hottest rock export out of Australia, with hits like “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” and “Cold Hard Bitch” featuring a sound that melded the power of fellow Aussies AC/DC with the garage-rock stylings of The White Stripes.

As Cester told Australian radio station Triple J, he got the call to audition for the vacant AC/DC singer slot when Brian Johnson had to step away from the band due to hearing issues.

Colin Burgess, the original drummer of rock band AC/DC, has died at age 77.
His death was confirmed by the band in a statement on Facebook. “Very sad to hear of the passing of Colin Burgess,” the statement said. “He was our first drummer and a very respected musician. Happy memories, rock in peace Colin.”
No cause of death was initially provided.
Burgess, an Australia native, teamed with other members of the first lineup of AC/DC, which also included lead vocalist Dave Evans, Malcolm Young, Angus Young and Larry Van Kriedt. After starting with the group in 1973, he left the following year. Phil Rudd would go on to become the best-known drummer of AC/DC across three separate stints with the band, which has continued to tour in its sixth decade. Colin Burgess, AC/DC’s original drummer, has died at the age of 77. The news was reported on AC/DC’s social media pages.
“Very sad to hear of the passing of Colin Burgess,” wrote AC/DC on Instagram. “He was our first drummer and a very respected musician. Happy memories, rock in peace Colin.”
Burgess was part of the original AC/DC lineup that formed in 1973 and included guitarists Malcolm and Angus Young, bassist/saxophonist Larry Van Kriedt, and singer Dave Evans. He appeared on the band’s debut single “Can I Sit Next to You, Girl,” but was fired from AC/DC in early 1974 for allegedly being drunk onstage, although he would claim that someone spiked his drink.
Prior to joining AC/DC, Burgess was a member of the Australian rock band The Masters Apprentices from 1968 to 1972, scoring a number of hits in the country during that time.

Post Malone appeared on The Howard Stern Show on Tuesday, and while he was there, he delivered a stirring acoustic rendition of Alice in Chains’ signature hit, “Them Bones.” Watch the performance below.
Introducing it by saying “Hey, Howard, hopefully I don’t fuck these lyrics up,” Post began his take on the song, playing guitarist Jerry Cantrell’s signature chromatic riff on a beefy acoustic guitar, as he was backed by a choir. Building tension through the opening verse, the arrangement blossomed on the first chorus when the drum line dropped and Post belted the iconic “Ah’s” originally delivered by Alice’s Layne Staley.
By the end of the song, Post was able to build enough energy with his gravelly croon that it’s easy to forget that you’re listening to an acoustic version of the grunge anthem. He finished it off with a final a cappella “Ah,...

UK singer-songwriter Sam Fender played the second of two homecoming concerts on Saturday (June 10th) in Newcastle, and he was joined by a special guest for the occasion: AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson.
Johnson took the stage for renditions of the AC/DC classics “Back in Black” and “You Shook Me All Night Long.” Both tunes are from 1980’s iconic Back in Black album, the band’s first LP featuring Johnson, after he replaced the late Bon Scott.
Considering AC/DC haven’t performed since 2016, a cameo from Johnson is a rare occurrence. Fender and company were up for the moment, knocking out joyful, rousing renditions (as seen in fan footage of the concert).
Johnson, in particular, seemed to relish being onstage once again. Back in 2016, he was forced to step away from AC/DC’s US tour due to hearing loss and was famously replaced by Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses.

Type O Negative are widely considered the definitive goth metal band, so it’s only appropriate that on World Goth Day (May 22nd), a new AI-generated video for the group’s song “Halloween in Heaven” has been unveiled.
The late Peter Steele originally penned the track as a tribute to Dimebag Darrell, and it was included on what would be Type O’s final album Dead Again in 2007. Dimebag even appears in the new video, alongside the many rock heroes Steele mentions in the song’s lyrics: “Bonham on drums, Entwistle on bass, as guest morticians / Bon Scott on vox, Rhoads just for kicks, on guitar Hendrix / Lennon sits in with his friend George but where is Morrison?”
“An artificial intelligence video for an artificially intelligent band!” remarked Type O Negative’s Johnny Kenny, invoking the band’s signature self-deprecating sarcasm.

A statue of AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson has been unveiled in Namur, Belgium, where he played his first show with the band on June 29th, 1980.
Johnson would join AC/DC following the tragic passing of singer Bon Scott in February 1980, laying down vocals on what would become the band’s biggest-selling album, Back in Black. Ahead of the LP’s release in July of that year, Johnson made his live debut with the band on the evening of June 29th at the Palais Des Expositions in Namur.
“[Namur is] a very special place for me,” Johnson reflected in a video message. “It was the first might I sang with AC/DC, and I was a very nervous boy. So that memory will stay with me forever, and now that you’ve built this statue. Honestly, I’m not worthy of it. I thank you, and I’ll take it in good grace.

There was once a time when Iggy Pop almost became the frontman for AC/DC.
In a conversation with The New York Times, Iggy Pop reflects on his turned-down opportunity to lead one of music’s most prolific bands following the death of AC/DC frontman Bon Scott.
Scott was found dead in early 1980 from pulmonary aspiration. His parents insisted AC/DC continue to record music while searching for a new lead, and that new leader was almost Iggy Pop.

Brian Johnson has become used to extremes. In the past few months, the caterwauling AC/DC lead singer has both made a triumphant comeback after deafness forced him off the road in 2016 and huddled in his mother-in-law’s Florida attic with a candle while Hurricane Ian decimated nearby coastal towns. Then he turned 75.

Ever since the dawn of Jack White, artists who hunger to reassert the power of rock in a rockless age have tended to sound like reactionary young coots. But Greta Van Fleet — three brothers and a drummer from Frankenmouth, Michigan — set themselves apart by playing Seventies classic rock that seemed wholly unburdened by distance, irony, cultural point-making or even self-awareness. They just really, really liked making songs that sounded like Led Zeppelin (with some Rush thrown in there, too), and on their 2018 debut, Anthem of the Peaceful Army, they approached...

The “Demon Fire” visual first premiered within the game Fortnite, an appropriate venue as the clip itself is modeled after video games, with a tricked-out car racing down a desolate highway to hell, squaring off against biker gangs and swarms of police cars while leaving a trail of pyrotechnics in its wake. For decades, AC/DC have defended their devil-horned crown as rock’s most stubborn band. They’ve survived deaths (singer Bon Scott in 1980, guitarist Malcolm Young in 2017) and dirty deeds (drummer Phil Rudd was placed on house arrest after threatening to kill a man). Yet, they remain eternally committed to their core values: rocking out, hailing Satan, and never going within an outback mile of a ballad. Brian Johnson became the lead singer for AC/DC following the death of Bon Scott, making his debut for the band on 1980’s astronomical hit Back in Black album. In 2016, following the Rock or Bust tour and with increasing hearing problems, he stepped down from the band. Always a petrolhead, this series of sit downs with musicians, talking about touring, vehicles and music has been one of the projects he’s taken on since leaving the band.
Knowing nothing about the series going in, I had expected the whole show to be a simple sit down between Johnson and Grohl, and perhaps a more even exchange rather than an interview format, but while I’m not at all interested in touring vans, the animated discussion that these two frontmen have about them is fun. Original AC/DC frontman Bon Scott died slightly less than one year before this show in Tokyo, and this was their first time on the road with singer Brian Johnson. It’s a rare live video where Johnson isn’t wearing his trademark newsboy hat.

Half a year before Bon Scott’s death, he was riding high with his AC/DC bandmates on the North American leg of their If You Want Blood Tour. On July 21st, 1979, that trek brought them to Oakland for an appearance at the megafestival Day on the Green, where they played the same day as Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, and Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, among others. Judging by video of AC/DC’s appearance, though, Bon Scott had enough energy for the whole day.

According to the late rock & roll historian Bon Scott of AC/DC and his barnstorming Old Testament scripture “Let There Be Rock,” the genre was born around 1955, when Pyotr Tchaikovsky said, “Let there be sound … light … drums … guitar,” all leading up to the revelation, “Let there be rock!” And while he may have gotten the timeline and provenance of rock & roll utterly and completely wrong, Scott captured the genre’s generally accepted origin story perfectly on the 1977 track. Within a few years, though, that definition was already changing, as new-wave...

AC/DC have released a vintage live video of “Whole Lotta Rosie” in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Highway to Hell. Shot for the Dutch TV show Countdown in 1979, the clip follows the recent release of live versions of “Highway to Hell” and “The Jack.”
The video features late lead singer Bon Scott shirtless and screaming lines that would deem inappropriate today, like “She ain’t exactly pretty/ Ain’t exactly small/ Fourt’two thirt’ninefiftysix/ You could say she’s got it all.” Malcolm Young, who once said...

AC/DC played a steamy rendition of “The Jack,” singer Bon Scott’s ode to STDs, when the band appeared on the Dutch TV show Countdown on July 13th, 1979. Dressed only in jeans and shoes, Scott caressed his mic and peered out at the packed crowd as he sang sexual innuendos, leading them in a sing-along accompanied only by the drums. Angus Young, also shirtless, plays his own seedy guitar solo midway through the bluesy number.

After weeks of speculation, Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose is stepping in to replace longtime AC/DC screamer Brian Johnson, who bowed out of the band’s current Rock or Bust tour due to hearing-loss issues.

While the choice has sparked a robust dialogue among AC/DC fans, it’s hardly the first time that a band has switched out singers. Music history is rife with such examples. As the debate over Axl/DC rages on, TheWrap ranks previous singer-swaps from best to worst — starting, oddly enough, with … 1) AC/DC (Brian Johnson) With the 1980 death of singer Bon Scott,...

Many in the hard rock world were shook all night long when word came out that AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson was told by doctors to stop touring immediately because he faces major hearing problems. But just days removed from this announcement, Johnson is changing his tune, and it's starting to look like he was booted from the band. According to Johnson’s friend, comedian and broadcaster Jim Breuer, the singer “feels like he just kind of got kicked to the curb.” Breuer broke the news during an interview on The Metal In Me podcast. Breuer added, “He was depressed. I’ve never seen him down before. He’s really depressed.” This is the second departure from the legendary band in recent years. In 2014, founding member and guitarist Malcolm Young had to retire due to dementia. Johnson joined AC/DC in 1980 following the death of the band’s then lead singer Bon Scott.

Production is underway on Jem And The Holograms, the live-action adaptation of the 80's animated series. The Holograms have already been cast. The rest of the call sheet is about to fill up with new names. And while Jem And The Holograms are young, they're about to come face-to-face with a woman who, by now, has logged a lot of hours rocking and rolling. Juliette Lewis is joining Jem And The Holograms, reports Deadline. Though her role is as-yet undisclosed, it's likely they'll be recruiting her for her musical chops. Lewis has been in two bands, Juliette And The Licks and The New Romantiques. She's compared her voice to Bon Scott's, though to be honest it sounds like there's a bit of Perry Farrell there as well. Catch a listen to Juliette And The Licks with Hot Kiss below. Given that Juliette Lewis and her band comes pre-prepared, is...

-- Anthrax "Anthems" (Mri/Megaforce)
There's a revelation on Anthrax's "Anthems" Ep: Rush's music is annoying, no matter who plays it.
The speed metal kings, driven by drummer Charlie Benante's infatuation with early Neil Peart, chose Rush's "Anthem" as the inspiration for their eight-track Ep in which they cover classic 1970s rock bands that influenced them. Suffice it to say the jarring stop-and-start timing and riffing of a Rush song doesn't work with the heaviest of heavy metal bands, either.
But the rest of this all-too-short disc is like hard-rock comfort food, hewing closely to the originals, with some special Anthrax sauce on the side. Best is a cover of Cheap Trick's "Big Eyes," which blends the band's melody with Anthrax's harder edge.
"Smokin'" is a cover of the classic Boston ode to inhalables, and "Jailbreak" puts a fine point on the Thin Lizzy classic.
Singer Joey Belladonna shows his vocal versatility here.

Bane may be Gotham's reckoning, but that doesn't mean he's above reproach.
As noted by Indiewire's Matt Singer, critics and fans have come up with increasingly hilarious ways to describe Bane's speaking voice in "The Dark Knight Rises." Tom Hardy plays the muscle-bound villain in the film, speaking through a mask that restricts his speech -- it's evident that a lot of work was done to Hardy's voice in post-production, as previously rumored -- while also affecting an accent that's quite peculiar. The results are ripe for comic potential.
"Bane sounds like Darth Vader mixed with T-Pain," wrote one Twitter user. Others on the social networking platform compared Hardy's vocal inflections to late AC/DC frontman Bon Scott, Count Chocula and "a drunk, elderly Patrick Stewart locked in a cupboard."

To celebrate the release of This Must Be The Place, I have listed ten films which share their name with songs. For those who don’t know, This Must Be The Place shares its name with the Talking Heads tune. And even though film and song have little in common, both song and Talking Heads front man David Byrne, appear in the film.
There is a proverbial bottomless pit of films and song which share a title. Some overtly, in reference to each other, whilst many are just tenuous links. My list has been dictated purely by a love of rock music. Bar one disco tune and a classic piece of soul; everything you are about to see is, like the film which inspired this list, connected to the warrior poets of melody. The likes of music based films such as The Wall or Yellow Submarine have been omitted for the sake of originality,...

From 1975 to 1977, Mark Evans played bass in AC/DC, which means he missed two of the band’s most earth-shattering moments: the death of original singer Bon Scott in 1980, and the triumphant release the same year of its crowning commercial triumph, Back In Black. Accordingly, Evan’s memoir, Dirty Deeds: My Life Inside/Outside Of AC/DC, is a bit skimpy and shortsighted when measured against the group’s epic history. But Evans managed to render his book much like AC/DC’s iconic hard rock: lean, raw, unflinching, and heavy on the riffs. To Evans’ benefit ...
