Fox Sports used the World Trade Center as the backdrop for a graphic on Saturday night’s “Baseball Night in America” broadcast.
Today, the division apologized for the insensitive depiction.
Fox superimposed the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox logos onto the memorial pools at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center site.
“During last night’s telecast, we used poor judgment on the use of a graphic,” a Fox Sports spokesman said in a statement. “We sincerely apologize and regret the decision.”
The memorial pools showns in the graphic sit in the footprints of the North and South Towers of the original trade center that collapsed on 9/11. The names of those who died on that date and in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing surround the pools.
Of all the NYC aerial shots Fox Sports could have used, they decided to superimpose their baseball logo over the 9/11 Memorial?...

I’m a sucker for crime fiction, whether it’s served up by Raymond Chandler or by Harlan Coben. As a kid, my passion for adventure stories started it all. But like a Chevy Impala on a rain-soaked highway, my interest slid all over the road. I’d devour mysteries, detective novels, pulps and crime thrillers.
In the world of comics, lately we’ve been treated to outstanding fantastic crime thrillers. Ed Brubaker leads the way, of course, with his various crime noir and spy series. Greg Rucka’s stuff is always fun and I hope Oni publishes more Stumptown soon. And other publishers, like Dynamite, Idw, and Boom! Studios have been providing strong contributions as well.
In the traditional book world, Hard Case Crime has been on the forefront of hardboiled crime fiction. Charles Ardai is the man behind it all, and he combines his love for this genre...

Having read far too many movie tie-ins in my time, I have a observation to share. Tie-ins that use the source material but add to it, such as storylines that run alongside the main story or ones that flesh out supporting characters, tend to be pretty good. They bring something of value. Ones that just duplicate the movie itself, or mimic it to a degree that you have a generic plot and cast, tend to be bad, sometimes very bad. Some properties lend themselves to being adapted quite naturally, others not so much. For me, Independence Day falls into the latter category so it’s fair to say my expectations going in to this were not high.

After developing a new Di stitching methodology for the Oscar-winning "Birdman," Technicolor raised the bar for dealing exclusively with uncontrollable natural light on this year's frontrunner, "The Revenant." This entailed creating another unconventional methodology for handling complex data management and color grading dailies on location in the Canadian wilds of Alberta, and then full color finishing in the production offices in Calgary and British Columbia. Read More: "How 'The Revenant' Changed Emmanuel Lubezki's Life" "[Cinematographer Emmanuel] Chivo [Lubezki] always knew it would be an extremely complex undertaking, and that he would not have the typical lighting support and setups," explained Steve Scott, who heads Technicolor's finishing department. “In fact, he planned strategically based on the fact that he would have no [lighting] control. Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

With the Academy Awards a memory and the "Birdman" team walking away with a boatload of Oscars, nondisclosure agreements keeping a lid on the secrets of the film's elaborate post-production digital "stitching" process have allowed a revelation to out. Technicolor, it turns out, invented an entirely new digital intermediate methodology to meet director Alejandro González Iñárritu's visual demands for the project, adding a whole new layer of depth to the already startling craftsmanship on display. The "single take" quality of "Birdman" started out as whispers in the summer. I first heard about it from producer John Lesher on the set of "Black Mass" in June, that it was "sort of a magic trick" how the effect was achieved. But it was also made clear at the time that they weren't really talking about it, in part to maintain the illusion when viewers finally got a look at it (as...

Now that the Academy Awards are over and "Birdman" won best picture, it can be revealed that Technicolor developed a new Di methodology for carrying out Alejandro González Iñárritu's bold, single-take experiment. This involved layering final color down on top of the final cut of the movie in a collaboration between the Oscar-winning director, two-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki, Rodeo FX and Technicolor (led by senior supervising digital colorist Steve Scott, who performed the Di and final conforming process). Stepping out of their comfort zone, the Technicolor Di team had to disregard where the official editorial cuts were located, and instead, subtly insert cuts designed specifically to meet their own needs as it related to the color grading process exclusively. This was a process that Technicolor eventually came to refer to as subtly "stitching" color-corrected...

It almost goes without saying at this point, but Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) has a lot of things going for it. From its stellar performances and interestng themes right on down to its jazzy, drum-heavy score, it's one of the best films to come out this year, but perhaps the most talked about aspect of the film for some time has been the way it was shot, or the way it appears to have been shot: as one continuous take with seemingly no cuts for the majority of its runtime. Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, and the rest of the Birdman team worked hard to achieve the effect, using a combination of long takes, camera movements, and editing tricks to make it happen. The final product is technically marvelous, leaving the audience in awe of this latest piece of movie magic. In the video below from Variety,...

Much has been said and written about Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s Birdman, an ambitious technical showcase powered by outstanding performances from Michael Keaton and Edward Norton. Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, best known for his work on Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity and Children of Men, has shot the film to feel as if it’s comprised of one long take. So how did they do it? A new video has come online that shares some of the secrets. Digital colorist Steve Scott shows Variety’s Tim Gray how they did it.

If you haven't seen Birdman yet, do yourself a favor and go see it as soon as you get the chance. It's hands down one of the best films of the year, and I really want to see Michael Keaton take home an Oscar for his role in the film. He gives one of his best performances ever. One of the things that made this movie so unique, is that it looks like the movie was shot in a single take. Of course it wasn't really shot that way, and movie magic played a part in how that seamless effect was accomplished. Thanks to Variety Artisans, we have a video that explains how they accomplished this feat. The video came with the following note:
On Birdman, Birdman, director Alejandro Gonzales Innaritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Chivo Lubezki achieved something very unusual: A film that looks like one continuous shot. But of course,...

Like it, love it or (in a few cases) loathe it, "Birdman" feels like one of the films that, when we look back years or decades from now, will come to define 2014 at the movies. With some of the best reviews of the year (including ours), and one of the best limited releases in recent memory, it looks as though it will be both a commercial hit and a serious Oscar contender along the way. It's worth noting that after three weeks the film hasn't played in more than 230 theaters, but will expand in the weeks and months to come. To help keep up the momentum, Fox Searchlight have released a couple of goodies for the film. One is a clip that features Michael Keaton alongside co-stars Naomi Watts, and Andrea Riseborough, while the other, more interesting one is a Variety featurette looking at how Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki...

Interview
Across the six decades since his first appearance in 1954, Godzilla’s roar has echoed through dozens of sequels and spin-offs. The 1954 Godzilla was a moving, angst-ridden account of an uncontrollable beast wrecking havoc on Tokyo. For a nation living through the aftermath of the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the parallels between Godzilla and the events of 1945 were plain to see. This, clearly, was more than just a mere monster movie.
16 years on from the financially successful yet hollow American incarnation made in 1998, British director Gareth Edwards takes the King of the Monsters back to the roots Ishiro Honda established in the creature’s debut outing. Edwards made his own impression on the genre back in 2010, with his debut feature, Monsters. A romantic road trip drama with an...

Judge Dredd #17
Writer: Duane Swierczynski
Art: Nelson Daniel & Steve Scott
Colours: John-Paul Bove
Letterer: Shawn Lee
Publisher: Idw & 2000Ad
Purchase: http://www.tfaw.com/Profile/Judge-Dredd-17___444681
One of the reasons Judge Dredd has been an iconic character for decades is the series’ ability to mimic any number of styles all within the same city. From sci-fi epics, to thought provoking examinations on the American Dream, Judge Dredd may encompass any style at any given time. But every once in awhile fans are treated to sheer chaos and horror in the form of the Dark Judges. The fan favourites from the 2000 Ad line make the leap over the pond in Idw’s Dredd stable. But is this another classic or are the creative team in over their head?
Writer Duane Swierczynski wastes no time in getting to the carnage. From page one to the very end, Mega-City One is engulfed in chaos.

Look, I know we all love Batman. His cool gadgets. His imposing figure. The way he dresses like a diminutive winged mammal and punches people in the head. And with the latest non-lego incarnation of the caped crusader still a few years away, things can be a little tough sometimes. We all need our coping mechanisms- maybe revisit earlier Batman films, pick up a comic book or swallow fistfuls of gravel in an attempt to sound more like Christian Bale. Well, the Internet’s coping mechanism seems to have involved a mass explosion of Batman vs. Superman rumors, many of which may or may not be completely insane. First came Robin/Nightwing. Then, The Flash and Wonder Woman. Now, the floodgates have opened, and out comes an endless stream of potential leaked info. Kevin Smith claimed to have seen a picture of Ben Affleck in full Bat-mode, after which he “instantly bear-hugged [Zack Snyder].” According to Smith, the...

New Batman Vs Superman first Ben Affleck as Batman concept art pic revealed. Recently, Comicbookmovie.com, served up this new concept art pic for the upcoming "Batman vs. Superman" super hero/action movie, and it gives us our first look at what actor Ben Affleck might look like, donning the Batman attire. DC comics artist, Steve Scott, drew up the concept art photo. In related news, the movie is now looking to cast a new love interest for Batman. They're currently shopping around a description to talent agencies as we speak. The new chick is described to being "in her late 20s and are open to all ethnicities, and are looking for an actress who is both tall and possesses physicality." Also, Detroit,Michigan was recently confirmed to be one of the filming locations for the movie, and is speculated to be the setting for Gotham City. The movie is...

Here's a piece of concept art that has hit the internet featuring Ben Affleck as Batman. The design comes from comic book artist Steve Scott who worked with Christopher Nolan on The Dark Knight comic book. I seriously doubt this is the design or look they are going for in the movie--this is just his vision of what could be. I don't really like it anyway. I do however like the note at the bottom that says, "Ben wants no bat nipples." I bet that's in his contract.

Batman is such a player!
We all assume since this is after all a sequel to Man Of Steel 2, that Bruce Wayne is going to try to pull a robbery on Clark Kent Jersey Shore style and bag Lois Lane. If you think about it, it is kind of on the nose and well, that ain’t screenwriter David Goyer’s style. I mean Bruce Wayne could end up at least flirting in a scene or two with Lois Lane but, Bruce has another woman on his mind. Yes, the Goddamn Batman is going to have a love interest.
How do I know? Well, the following casting breakdown is what is floating around to the talent agencies.
They’re looking for someone in their late 20s and are open to all ethnicities. So not only does the 42 year old Goddamn Batman like em at least a decade younger, but...

A piece of art is hitting all the online forums that reveals Ben Affleck as Batman in the form of Steve Scott comic book art. No idea if it's all related, but Steve Scott did work directly with Chris Nolan on the comic book for The Dark Knight! Pretty cool! As per the Internet Movie Database, Reems had already appeared in several small stag films prior to Deep Throat. He had also been featured in a tiny role in the Jane Fonda / Donald Sutherland crime thriller Klute, released in 1971 and coincidentally directed by All the President's Men's Alan J. Pakula. He later claimed that he almost landed the part of the coach in John Travolta / Olivia Newton-John's 1978 musical Grease, but the film's powers-that-be eventually reached the conclusion that his association with porn would have been detrimental to the Paramount release. (Pictured above: Adam Brody plays Reems in Lovelace, with Amanda Seyfried as Linda Lovelace seen on her knees.) Harry Reems kept on working in the X-rated movie industry throughout the '80s. Also according to the Internet Movie Database, his last movie credit was Steve Scott's Too Good to Be True, with Ginger Lynn and Peter North,...

Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto franchise has been incredibly fun to play over the years, and it's been awesome to see the game evolve. One of the things I love most about it is the open world gameplay. In fact I think GTA's open world was a game changer for video games. One of my favorite things to do in the game was to create so much chaos, get a horde of cops chasing after me and see how long I could outrun them and survive. For those of you who grew up with GTA I'm sure there's a lot of things you enjoyed doing in those open world cities.
With Grand Theft Auto V coming out next year, I thought it'd be cool to do a list of some of my favorite quotes from the game franchise. I started out with a Top 20, but then there were just so...

A crowd has formed and waits with bated breath for what's next from a diminutive lad who can break wind on command and has already used his behind to play a trumpet.
It's not fifth grade recess nor a South Park episode. No, it's a scene from "The Fartiste," an off-Broadway musical based on the true story of Joseph Pujol who exercised supercontrol of his sphincter and developed his special skill into a noisemaking stage act that commanded top dollar during the late 19th century in the Moulin Rouge.
It might be lowbrow humor at its lowest, but it gets laughs. Why? Unfortunately the cast and crew can't say. You just have to have an open mind ... and open nostrils.
"I love fart jokes and I think that everyone should," said Charlie Schulman, who wrote the show's book. "It's one of those things in life that makes people laugh, but I don't know why.

In the latest of our comprehensive series of reviews of DC Comics' 52 relaunched titles, we take a look at Batman #1. Who's it by?
Batman #1 is written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Greg Capullo. What's the history?
Following his debut in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939, Batman was given a solo series by popular demand in the spring of 1940. The comic was first advertised one month after the first appearance of Robin, and began life as a quarterly publication. Batman became a bi-monthly publication in the late 1950s, and monthly in the ensuing years. Its initial run ended with August's issue #713, by Fabian Nicieza and Steve Scott. The original Batman #1 introduced a host of new character's to the DC Universe, notably Catwoman and the Joker. They weren't the only comic book icons to debut in the title. (more)...

Steve Scott, known for his work on Batman, Razor, New Warriors, X-Men and Green Lantern, discusses his work on the Batman Begins home video release as well as Batman: Pieces. Scott penciled the current Batman: Pieces series and reflected on the current story arc, in which the villainous Two-Face is back with a vengeance. "We really dig a bit deeper in the mind of Two Face," said Scott. "It's an exploration into the mind of a man that continues to be tortured. Or, at least, that's how I read it. Tony (Daniel) did an amazing job delving into A tortured Harvey Dent. I actually felt sorry for him a bit during the course of this story line." In the Batman: Pieces series an unknown villain is targeting Gotham's crimelords (including Harvey Dent aka Two-Face). The Bat discovers that Kitrina...

Publicly-traded Ascent Media Corp. has inked an agreement to sell the Ascent Media Group creative services and media services divisions to Deluxe Entertainment Services Group. The deal, expected to close by year’s end, is valued at roughly $68 million. John Malone’s Liberty Media is the majority shareholder of Ascent.
The deal would bring together two of the world’s largest postproduction entities -- and in doing so radically change the global footprint of the post industry.
It would also bring together two of Hollywood’s leading digital intermediate businesses: Ascent-owned Company 3, which is run by leading colorist Stefan Sonnenfeld (Alice in Wonderland, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,) who also recently inked a first look producing deal with Paramount; and Deluxe-owned Efilm, which is home to respected colorists including Steve Scott (Iron Man 2, Julie & Julia).

Bungie's very real "Halo: Reach" Legendary Edition materialized in retailer listings for $149.99 with a special case, collectibles and an assortment of in-game armor, as well as a "Legendary Noble 6" sculpture. Bungie waited until nearly the eleventh hour, however, to go into detail about their "two full hours of exclusive, behind-the-scenes campaign commentary covering unrevealed aspects of 'Halo: Reach''s production" that are now officially part of the package.
Creative director Marcus Lehto, audio director and composer Marty O’Donnell, cinematics and story lead Lee Wilson and effects lead Steve Scott will all contribute to the extra content, according to a post on Bungie.net. Their reflections will cover "a full campaign play-through, from start to finish." It will be "judiciously edited to excise the downtime and deliver only the most impactful moments," however, so it sounds like they'll try to keep it lively. • Tony-winning composer Maury Yeston talked in great detail to Harry Haun about the journey of "Nine" from screen (as "8 1/2") to stage and back to screen. "There are only two ways to approach Broadway shows becoming movies," Yeston says. "One of them is to be an over-controlling fuddy-duddy and not let anybody change anything. The other is to step back and go with the new medium." For Yeston, "The adaptation back into film was a very organic one that made a tremendous amount of sense. It was a great opportunity to allow this piece -- which had been so cinematic to begin with -- to find again its place in the grammar of cinema. That means things like dissolves, edits, close-ups, lighting effects -- things film can do for exposition to get inside the mind." Playbill
