The demise of disco was greatly accelerated by the cultural impact of the infamous Disco Demolition Night of 1979 in Chicago’s Comiskey Park. While rockers have used the word in a pejorative sense for years, DJs, artists, impresarios, and aficionados know that disco—both the genre and the subculture—not only has deep roots but has lived on under various aliases, inspiring the evolution of music and keeping people moving in various funky ways. Le freak, c’est toujours chic!
These are the ideas, plot points and storylines that Toronto filmmakers Omar Majeed (“Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam”) and Peter Mishara explore in their documentary feature “Disco’s Revenge,” which had its world premiere Thursday in Hot Docs’ Pop/Life strand.
The film, which screens again Friday, is set for release this year. Elevation Pictures will distribute it in Canada; Republic Pictures has acquired rights outside of Canada.

Neon Intl. has added to its growing EFM slate with Jason Buxton’s “Sharp Corner,” starring Ben Foster and Cobie Smulders. The company, launched last year as the sales arm of Neon, will launch the project in Berlin.
The under-the-radar feature, now in post-production, is based on the short story from Russell Wangersky’s Giller Prize-shortlisted collection “Whirl Away,” and marks Buxton’s follow up to his debut film, 2012’s ”Blackbird,” which won the best first feature in Toronto and picked up the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes Écrans Juniors.
“Sharp Corner” follows a dedicated family man who becomes obsessed with saving the lives of the car accident victims on the sharp corner in front of his house — an obsession that could cost him everything.
The film, a Canadian-Irish co-production, is produced with the participation of Telefilm Canada, the Canada Media Fund, Screen Nova Scotia, Ontario Creates and in association with Bell Media/Crave.

Canadian director Atom Egoyan is bringing his latest movie, Seven Veils, to the Toronto Film Festival for a world premiere, with Amanda Seyfried in the lead role as a tortured opera director.
Seyfried reteamed with her Chloe director Egoyan for the opera-themed drama where she plays Jeanine, a theatre director remounting her former mentor’s most famous work, an adaptation of the opera Salome from composer Richard Strauss, based on the play by Oscar Wilde. As Jeanine reenters the opera world after years away, she is haunted by dark and disturbing memories from her past as her repressed trauma colors the present.
Rebecca Liddiard, Douglas Smith, Mark O’Brien and Vinessa Antoine also star in Seven Veils, which was shot in and around Toronto earlier this year. Should the ongoing strikes by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA continue into the fall, American actors will be barred from publicizing any big-ticket studio movies...

Since Elevation Pictures launched in 2013, its logo has become cozily familiar to film lovers across Canada. Just as the Janus Films logo ensures a true art house experience or Blumhouse a plunge into horror, Elevation promises Canadian viewers the best indies from both sides of the border and beyond.
For company co-presidents Laurie May and Noah Segal, that kind of brand identity has been strategic and deliberate. “Quality is king, always has been. It’s good content and a good setup,” Segal says of Elevation’s curated slate of films, each handpicked by his team and designed to compete in theaters and on TV against Hollywood tentpoles and streaming competition.
May and Segal were hardly new to the indie business when Elevation launched. As veterans of earlier players like Lionsgate’s Canadian arm and Alliance Films, the duo knew they had enough hands-on experience — and connections — in distribution to venture out on their own.

An epic rise and fall for a once-ubiquitous mobile device is chronicled in the first trailer for IFC Films’ BlackBerry.
The fact-based feature from director Matt Johnson stars Jay Baruchel as Mike Lazaridis, co-founder of BlackBerry maker Research in Motion, and Glenn Howerton as the company’s former co-ceo Jim Balsillie. The trailer shows immediate tension between the pair, with Lazaridis being warned before agreeing to work with Balsillie that he is a shark.
The footage includes Howerton telling Baruchel, “I know how to market it, and I know who we can sell it to, but I want 50 percent of the company, and I’ve got to be CEO.” Surprisingly, Baruchel’s character is good with this arrangement.
Later, Howerton’s Balsillie says, “We are in a race to get this thing to market, and we are a year behind — I need a prototype.”
Another pivotal scene shows Lazaridis, played by Baruchel,...

MGM has released the official trailer for Zach Braff’s latest directorial effort, “A Good Person,” which stars “Midsommar” actor Florence Pugh opposite Celeste O’Connor, Zoe Lister-Jones, Molly Shannon and Morgan Freeman. The upcoming drama sees Pugh transform into Allison, a traumatized car crash survivor recovering from opioid addiction. Years after the accident, Allison begins to confront her past through an unlikely friendship with the father of her late fiancé.
Braff and Pugh previously worked together on Braff’s 2019 short film “In the Time It Takes to Get There,” where Pugh plays the 18th century equivalent of a social media influencer. Following their collaboration, the two began a relationship.
“The movie that we made together genuinely was probably one of my most favourite experiences,” Pugh said in the interview. “It felt like a very natural and easy thing to do.”
Braff is best known for playing the recurring role of J.

Florence Pugh proves that you can never really go home again.
The Oscar nominee stars in Zach Braff’s latest drama “A Good Person” as Allison, a woman who survives a fatal accident and forms an unlikely relationship with her would-be father-in-law played by Morgan Freeman. Braff writes, directs, and produces the New Jersey-set feature. Pugh also makes her producing debut with the film, which serves as a reunion for Freeman and director Braff after 2017’s “Going in Style.”
Molly Shannon, Celeste O’Connor, Zoe Lister-Jones, and Chinaza Uche round out the cast.
The official synopsis reads: Daniel (Freeman) is brought together with Allison (Pugh), the once thriving young woman with a bright future who was involved in an unimaginable tragedy that took his daughter’s life. As grief-stricken Daniel navigates raising his teenage granddaughter and Allison seeks redemption, they discover that friendship, forgiveness, and hope can flourish in unlikely places.

What if you could send your clone to be punished for your crimes?
Neon’s “Infinity Pool,” written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg (“Possessor”), stars Alexander Skarsgård as a novelist who accidentally kills a man while on vacation. Yet in this foreign land, the punishment is death: either his own, or for the right price, the death of a fabricated doppelgänger. Mia Goth also stars in the thriller, hinting at what would happen if “The White Lotus” merged with “The Purge” and “Eyes Wide Shut,” with a bit of an “Us” twist.
Per the official synopsis, while staying at an isolated island resort, James (Skarsgård) and Em (Cleopatra Coleman) are enjoying a perfect vacation of pristine beaches, exceptional staff, and soaking up the sun. But guided by the seductive and mysterious Gabi (Goth), they venture outside the resort grounds and find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror.

Anna Kendrick’s “Alice, Darling,” directed by Mary Nighy, has released its first trailer.
Nighy, the daughter of “Living” star Bill Nighy, brought her directorial debut to Toronto Film Festival back in September for its world premiere. The psychological thriller also stars Kaniehtiio Horn, Charlie Carrick and Wunmi Mosaku.
Nominated for an Academy Award for “Up in the Air” (2009), Kendrick stars in “Alice, Darling” as a woman pushed to the breaking point by her psychologically abusive boyfriend, Simon. While on vacation with two close girlfriends, Alice rediscovers her essence and gains some much-needed perspective. Slowly, she starts to fray the cords of codependency that bind her. But Simon’s vengeance is as inevitable as it is shattering — and, once unleashed, it tests Alice’s strength, courage, and the bonds of her deep-rooted friendships.
Kendrick has continued her pursuit of new and interesting roles such as “A Simple Favor” (2018) and HBO Max...

Billed as the first Indigenous and female-led produced, written, and directed drama about the residential school experience in North America, Marie Clements’ “Bones of Crows” is not afraid of making people uncomfortable.
“We should be squeamish about it,” the helmer tells Variety at Mipcom, addressing the show’s graphic scenes. A concurrent feature film is also in the works.

Four weeks ago, we heard that Infinity Pool, a new sci-fi thriller from director Brandon Cronenberg, the son of the legendary David Cronenberg, had been slapped with an Nc-17 by the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association. The reason given for that rating was “some graphic violence and sexual content”. The ratings announcement came with the note that the makers of Infinity Pool intend to appealed to the Classification and Rating Administration appeals board in an attempt to get the Nc-17 turned into an R. And apparently that appeal didn’t go their way, because it has now been announced that Infinity Pool was edited in order to receive an R rating.
The new rating announcement says that Infinity Pool was been rated R for “graphic violence, disturbing material, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and some language.” Which makes it sound even harsher than the Nc-17 cut.

As we told you last month, Antiviral and Possessor director Brandon Cronenberg‘s next is the sci-fi movie Infinity Pool for Neon and Topic Studios, which received an “Nc-17” rating from the MPA for “Some graphic violence and sexual content.” We also told you that an appeal was underway, and this week the MPA has finally handed the film an “R” rating.
The film’s previous “Nc-17” rating has been voided and the film has been re-edited a bit to achieve the “R” rating. This edited version of Infinity Pool has been rated “R” for…

The good news? It sounds like the film will remain violent and boundary-pushing!
Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

Over a year has gone by since we heard that Alexander Skarsgard (Godzilla vs. Kong) would be starring in Infinity Pool, a new sci-fi thriller from director Brandon Cronenberg, the son of the legendary David Cronenberg. Infinity Pool, which also stars Mia Goth – who Ti West is working on turning into a genre icon with his X, Pearl, and MaXXXine trilogy – has since made its way through production, and was recently screened for the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association. And that screening didn’t go the way Cronenberg and distributor Neon were hoping it would.
