Did not start writing until he was 30-years old.
Had a history of substance abuse and became sober after being arrested for heroin possession.
Struggled with depression for most of his life, which intensified close to his death.
Dropped out of high school at the age of 15.
Was unable to work for much of his twenties due to poor health.
His novel "Last Exit To Brooklyn" took 6 years to write.
Was not an avid reader as a child, having been more interested in athletics.
Loved classical music and thought about becoming a composer once.
Had to have 10 of his ribs removed due to problems with his lungs.
