Sardar Ka Grandson(Netflix)
Starring Neena Gupta, Arjun Kapoor, Rakul Preet Singh
Directed by Kaashvie Nair
With Neena Gupta and Arjun Kapoor playing the eponymous parts Sardar Ka Grandson promises to at least regale us with one of those endlessly endearing sagas of family ties… you know, like Prem Kishen and ‘Dadaji’ Madan Puri in the Rajshri classic Dulhan Wohi Jo Piya Man Bhaye or Salman and his grandfather Shammi Kapoor in Jab Pyar Kissise Hota Hai. Sadly—and I say this with a heavy heart—Sardar Ka Grandson generates as much chemistry between the Daadi-Grandson pair as fire and ice. Ms Gupta, otherwise such an accomplished actress gives one of her career’s hammiest performances as a sullen sulky Sadarni Rupinder Kaur (was the role written for Sushma Seth) who wants her dying wish to be fulfilled by her beloved grandson: she wants to see her ancestral home in Lahore.

For years, Authorities That Be have had a 'use and ignore' policy towards celebrities, especially filmstars, as well as top-rung filmmakers. Various regimes over the decades have held film celebrities in a tight leash, always having an attitude of 'Or Else'.
India was not known to be a resourceful country to meet challenges. Be it a war, floods, earthquake or any other calamity, the country had to appeal to the public to donate its mite. From cash, clothes, grains to gold, everything was collected. Nobody trusted the governments and made donations. So, who was made to take out a rally and beg through the cities of India to beg on behalf of the government? Since the Indo-China war, this has been the norm. It is another matter that none of these collections from the public, in the form of cash or gold, has ever been accounted for,...

It is easier to point out the faults in this remarkable film than to enumerate reasons why I found the experience irresistible.
Among the faults, the film, like its hero Ved, fails to separate reality from fantasy. Imtiaz Ali moves in an out of both the mutually inclusive worlds with exasperating self-confidence, certain in his faith in the power of the imagination. In fact the film opens with a lengthy staged skit where a female clown (speaking in Deepika’s unmistakable voice) challenges the robotic alien played by Ranbir.
But how can the clown be Deepika since at that point of time in the free-flowing narrative the two haven’t met….or have they?
Imtiaz then flashbacks to Ved’s childhood. And a wise little boy spends his father’s money listening to the storyteller (Piyush Mishra) spin yarns about lovers, losers and strugglers. Later, much later the storyteller returns...

When Vikas Bahl announced Shaandaar, the expectations understandably soared. After all, he had given us one of the most endearing and fun movies of 2014 – Queen. With the Alia – Shahid chemistry visible in the promos, it looked like the movie had everything going for it. What you get instead is a bad potpourri which tries to be everything and ends up going nowhere.
The movie starts with a (rather long) animated prologue which establishes the characters of the Arora family, who are a Bollywood version of a Disney family. There is the strict conniving Mummyji (Sushma Seth), a silent loving father (Pankaj Kapur), a shrewd step-mother (Niki Walia), a chubby sister with a heart of gold (Sanaah) and a poor pretty orphan kid (Alia).
Mummy decides to make a “business deal” with the Fundwanis and marry off her granddaughter Isha to Harry Fundwani’s brother, Mr. 8 ½ pack abs. The Fundwanis are...

The very good looking lead pair of this enormously disappointing film, ironically and pompously calling itself Shaandaar, are insomniacs. To prove it, they even get a ravaged remix version of the classic number ‘Neend Na Mujhko Aaye’ playing in the background as Shahid and Alia go fishing, dancing, and generally pfaffing around to fob off sleep-challenged ennui.
I have a great solution for all insomniacs. Watch Shaandaar. Repeatedly in a loop. Sleep guaranteed.
Outwardly the film has everything going for it. The director of Queen Vikas Bahl helming the hijinks as two ridiculously ostentatious business families gather for a destination wedding in a European idyll.
It must have cost them a bomb. To make the film, I mean. To cart the large cast of bimbos, bimbettes, toy boy and joy girls all to a European destination for a film that must have seemed smart on paper…very smart. After all,...

Actor-producer Sanjay Kapoor will be seen playing a pivotal role in Vikas Bahl's rom-com Shaandaar releasing soon. To be specific, the actor, for the first time plays the role of a Sindhi don named Harry Fundwani in this upcoming film about destination wedding. Considering that Sanjay is a Punjabi, obviously he required someone to train him with the nuances of the character, especially the language and filmmaker Tarun Mansukhani came to his rescue. Tarun helped Sanjay pull off his loveable and funny character of a Sindhi don wherein he helped him to get the right Sindhi dialect for his character. A source says, "Vikas Bahl had approached Tarun asking him if he could help Sanjay for his role of a Sindhi don. Vikas briefed the filmmaker about Sanjay's character and he was very excited to help Sanjay. The three sat for a couple of days and Tarun helped...

The best tales are timeless. But even better are those that evolve with the times. Movie review: Pal Pal Dil Ke Saath; Star cast: Ajay Jadeja, Rimpy aka Mahie Gill, Vinod Kambli, Chabi, Satish Shah and Sushma Seth; Director: V Krishna Kumar; Rating: 1 - Belongs to the 60s.
It is at times like these that I really hate my job. On a public holiday getting oneself to a cinema hall and watching two back to back movies, both extremely unbearable is definitely the worst torture that one can inflict upon oneself. It was even a big task convincing the multiplex staff to play the show of one of these films as they were canceling it for lack of audience.
