Dynasty, the CW’s reboot of the beloved ABC sudser from the ’80s, came to an end Friday night after five seasons. Here, showrunner Josh Reims talks about what he really wanted to do in the last episode, and how odd it was that ratings for the sudser were never really discussed.
Deadline: Did you have enough time to plan for a series finale?
Josh Reims We actually planned a series finale and a season finale, just in case. We did twice the work, basically.
Did you know you wanted to end with the wedding?
Reims That came up near the end. For some reason we kept ending seasons with weddings and we thought it would be fun to do it again. We figured Culhane (Robert C. Riley) and Nina (Felisha Terrell) were the best couple to do it, and we liked the idea of playing around and having viewers...

Unorthodox star Shira Haas and Boardwalk Empire alum Stephen Graham have joined the cast for Netflix‘s upcoming drama Bodies, based on the graphic novel by Si Spencer. According to Deadline, Graham will play Elias Mannix, a central character in the story, while Haas will play one of the investigating officers, DC Maplewood. They join the previously announced Jacob Fortune-Lloyd (The Queen’s Gambit), Kyler Soller (The Inheritance), and Amaka Okafor (The Responder). Created by Torchwood writer Paul Tomalin, the eight-part drama centers on four detectives in four different London eras, all investigating the same murder. The narrative covers the 1890s, the 1940s, the 2010s, and the post-apocalyptic 2050. It is produced by Moonage Pictures’ Will Gould and Frith Tiplady and directed by Marco Kreutzpaintner (Beat) and Haolu Wang (Doctor Who). Haas is an Israeli actress who had her breakout in the Israeli television drama series Shtisel. She is best known for...

There will be no Season 6 for the CW’s Dynasty. The CW has opted not to renew the reboot of the iconic 1980s soap, and it will end with the current fifth season.
Dynasty was considered among the most vulnerable CW series to snag a renewal. It was the victim of disappointing ratings and its previous renewals, along with 4400, had been motivated by the money the series generates for CBS Studios through the show’s Netflix deal.
Dynasty hails from Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, CBS Studios and Fake Empire. Schwartz and Savage teamed with Revenge writer-producer Sallie Patrick and the original series’ creators, husband-and-wife duo Esther Shapiro & Richard Shapiro, for a new modern-day reboot of the classic Aaron Spelling-produced ABC series.

2021 Golden Globe Final Predictions:
Best Actress In A Limited Series Or TV Movie
Updated: Feb. 24, 2021
Awards Commentary:
What a year for Anya Taylor-Joy. “The Queen’s Gambit” star is a double nominee at this year’s Golden Globes, both in the best actress in a limited series or TV movie category, as well as in the best actress in a motion picture (comedy or musical) field for “Emma.” Not bad, and clearly the HFPA members are fans — which is why she’s the front runner in this category. But as we’re predicting “The Queen’s Gambit” will be named best limited series or TV movie, it makes sense the program’s star would also be honored. The show hit the zeitgeist at the right time,...

On Wednesday, as Golden Globe Nominations were announced, Unorthodox‘s Shira Haas was at home in Tel Aviv, glued to the Netflix series’ cast and crew group text. When both the show and Haas herself received noms, there were “a lot of capital letters” in that Whatsapp chat, she told Deadline.
“I’m super excited and happy,” she said. “It’s more than I expected. It’s the greatest. “We were texting like crazy, and phonecalls one after the other with the crew. There’s a lot of love even though it’s been a while since we filmed it.”

It was a great night for Sister Night: Watchmen star Regina King won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role in the HBO comic book adaptation at Sunday’s virtual ceremony.
King accepted the Emmy from her home, wearing a pink blazer over a T-shirt bearing the face of Breonna Taylor with the words “Say Her Name.” She thanked Watchmen executive producer Damon Lindelof and his “brilliant mind” along with the entire writing team, and added: “Gotta vote. I would be remiss not to mention that being a part of a show as prescient as Watchmen.

There is triumph in “Unorthodox,” but there is also tragedy. The triumph comes from Esther Shapiro (Shira Haas), aka “Esty,” the young woman who escapes her Hasidic life in Williamsburg to find a new secular beginning in Berlin. The tragedy is that the family she leaves behind never makes an attempt to understand her.
Usually, these things go both ways. Watching the show led me to contemplate my own family connections to Orthodox Judaism, and whether I had ever made a legitimate attempt to address the disconnection I have with my closest relative at the center of that world. He’s my brother, and “Unorthodox” gave me a welcome excuse to discuss issues we had set aside years ago.
“Unorthodox,” an eight-time Emmy nominee, doesn’t make a compelling case for religious Judaism, but it wrestles with what it means to feel to connected to that routine. That much felt familiar.

Long before Shira Haas drew universal acclaim and an Emmy nomination this year for her portrayal of the daring Esty Shapiro in Netflix’s “Unorthodox,” she co-starred in the Israeli drama “Shtisel,” about a sprawling Orthodox family in Jerusalem. As Ruchami Weiss, the oldest daughter in a family of six kids, Haas plays the character as steadfast and kind, with an undercurrent of anger that can ripen into rebelliousness. In December 2018, Netflix started streaming the two seasons of “Shtisel” that ran on Israeli television in 2013 and 2015-16, making the show an international phenomenon. As a consequence of that popularity, “Shtisel” began filming its long-delayed third season this summer.

Think of Linda Blair acting in the 1970s, and the ’73 horror classic The Exorcist will likely be the first film that comes to your mind. But while there’s ample reason for that movie to stand out as it does, Blair put on an equally memorable performance – albeit in a completely different type of movie – in 1974’s made-for-tv feature Born Innocent. In that release, which has the feel of an especially harsh ABC Afterschool Special, Blair plays an average, highly likable teenage kid who becomes estranged from her worthless parents and winds up in a rough juvenile detention facility, following some runaway attempts. Born Innocent can be lumped in with the “babes behind bars” exploitation subcategory of films, but there’s nothing campy about the TV movie. It’s downbeat, super realistic, and devastatingly sad.

The original Dynasty TV show ran on ABC for nine seasons, between January 1981 and May 1989. The classic primetime sudser, from creators Richard and Esther Shapiro, starred John Forsythe, Linda Evans and Joan Collins and was launched to compete with CBS' Dallas. Now The CW is rebooting it straight -- i.e. it isn't a sequel series or a spinoff. Other than being set in the present, much remains more or less the same, despite a new ethnicity and name-spelling here, a gender swap there, and a location about 1,400 miles east. Is that enough to enthrall a new generation of fans and attract fans of the original? Will the new Dynasty be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. A CW soap opera, Dynasty stars Grant Show, Alan Dale, Elizabeth Gillies, Nathalie Kelley,...

[Editors Note: This post is presented in support of The CW’s new series “Dynasty,” which premieres on October 11 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt on The CW.]
Dynasties evolve, and so does “Dynasty.” The popular 1980s primetime soap opera has been reinvented for the 21st century, and it may very well be the sexiest and most progressive-minded take yet on the classic serial genre.
The new “Dynasty” pushes the envelope from the beginning, when viewers see Carrington family heiress Fallon (Elizabeth Gillies) receiving oral pleasure from her chauffeur (Robert Christopher Riley). The show boasts a diverse cast, makes references to other real-life dynasties (including, yes, the Trump family) and features modern storylines like the business growth of renewable energy.
“‘Dynasty’ is such an appealing title in and of itself, not even knowing about the original series,” said executive producer Sallie Patrick. “It’s a word that evokes power and legacy and a certain level of epic-ness.”
As she prepared to develop an entirely new version, Patrick watched episodes from the old series and met with creators Richard and Esther Shapiro.

Break out the mud (but get rid of the shoulder pads): The CW is prepping a new, modern remake of the classic primetime soap “Dynasty.”
Among the changes: In this version, Krystle (originally played by Linda Evans) is now Cristal, a Latina woman marrying into the Carrington clan.
Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are developing the new show, along with Sallie Patrick (“Revenge”). The husband-wife duo who originally created “Dynasty,” Esther Shapiro and Richard Shapiro, are also attached as executive producers.

The '80s soap opera "Dynasty" is coming to the big screen. Creators Richard and Esther Shapiro are already putting the finishing touches on the screenplay, which is planned to be a prequel to their high successful series between a twenty something Blake Carrington and a teenage Alexis Morrell.
The ABC soap revolved around the dysfunctional Carrington family headed by oil tycoon patriarch Blake (John Forsythe) and the catfights between his wife Krystle (Linda Evans) and his scheming first wife Alexis (Joan Collins).
It had been a consistent ratings hit until its subsequent decline in its later years. It lasted for nine seasons.
According to TV Guide, the film will open with a young Blake battling his half siblings upon discovering that he's a Carrington. It will conclude with his marriage to Alexis, before the birth of their children Adam, Fallon, Steven and Amanda.

Dynasty creators Richard and Esther Shapiro are putting the finishing touches on a film script that would be a prequel to their 1980s oil drama, focusing on the 1960s love story between twentysomething Blake Carrington (John Forsythe) and teen Alexis Morrell (Joan Collins).
"It seems to be the right time, with Sex and the City and some of the other TV shows having jumped to the big screen," says Richard, adding that "everyone has always wanted to know the beginnings of Blake and Alexis, who was in love with him throughout the series."

It’s the 80s revival you’ve been waiting for.
Forget The A-Team and Transformers movies which lit up cinemas screens over the last few years, forget the endless rumours about Ghostbusters 3 – if there was ever a symbol of the 1980s it was the bermuda love triangle of Blake Carrington, Krystle and Alexis who fought, loved, and smouldered in most of the livings rooms of the Western world in Dynasty. And it’s heading to the big screen.
I never saw the series, but was aware that it existed – the opening titles (which you can see below) will throw people back to a time when shoulder pads arched as high up as the hair, and the soap opera was given its greatest soprano in Joan Collins’ bitch from a thousand fathoms, Alexis.
I did begin to watch the series a while ago with some friends, with the moral and...

Two key series that ran in the late 70's and early 80's are making comebacks, albeit in different ways.
"Dynasty" creators Richard and Esther Shapiro revealed that they are developing a feature film based on the popular soap opera about a wealthy oil family. The film will serve almost as a prequel of sorts with the action taking place during the 1960s and the tone akin to "Mad Men" reports Coming Soon
"It's fun, because the fans of the show will know from the series where each of the characters end up eventually, but what they won't know is how they get there. There will be some very unlikely twists and situations, and people will not be expecting a lot of what we're planning...The movie will be the old Dynasty, of course, but with horns" says Richard Shapiro.
A script is currently in the works, though now studio has yet been attached

It's hard to imagine the 80's TV series 'Dynasty' without hulking, bedazzled shoulder pads, a feathered, Aqua Net-heavy coiffure and Joan Collins' glossy sneer, but the soap opera is being brought to the big screen -- 'Mad Men' style. 'Dynasty' creators Richard and Esther Shapiro are trading the age of excess for the 1960s in order to trace the roots of the show's characters.
The Shapiros are anxious to explore the saga of the wealthy Denver family in the oil business without the constraints of a small budget TV series. "In the movie, if we want to have some James Bond style action, we can afford to do that. If we want to have a steamy love scene, we can do that. If we want to go a few steps beyond what they would allow on 1980s TV, we can move ahead those few steps,...

'Dynasty' is set to be turned into a movie. The hit 80s TV show - which starred Joan Collins, John Forsythe and Linda Evans - was created by Richard and Esther Shapiro and the pair are now working on the script for a film version based on the series. In a statement Esther said: "The time is right. Nostalgia has always been big, but we want to take it a step further. We want to go back to the beginning with these characters and use the film to trace their roots. We're taking Blake Carrington (John) back to his young manhood and when he met Alexis (Joan), and setting the movie in the 'Mad Men' era of the 1960s. It will give us the opportunity to start fresh, without the constraints that television placed on our characters in the series." Richard is confident the movie will be a...

Dallas has been struggling through development hell for years now, and seems to have ended up stuck back on the goggle box. The producers behind rival soap Dynasty will be hoping that they have more luck, as they’re aiming to bring the big shoulder pads and the ‘80s glam to cinemas.Creators Richard and Esther Shapiro have announced that they’re already working on the script for the film, based on the series that ran for nine series from 1981. Chronicling the wealthy Carrington family and their associated friends, lovers, enemies and hangers-on, the show was wish-fulfilment cheese with a blinged-out, often Ott attitude. So why bring it back in the middle of a recession? “The time is right,” says Esther Shapiro in a statement picked up by The Wrap. “Nostalgia has always been big, but we want to take it a step further. We want to go back to...

You.d think if any 80s prime-time soap opera was going to make the transition to feature films, it.d be Dallas. That project, though long sought after, has never really turned into anything concrete. Instead it looks like it may be Dynasty which makes the jump from 80s soap to feature film. The show.s creators Richard and Esther Shapiro have spoken out about their plans to make the silver screen move. In an announcement sent out today they say, .We.re taking the Dynasty family to places they.ve never been before.. To that end a script is reportedly in development, and though no studio is currently attached the Shapiros seem to think it could go into production next year. Fans of the show, however, will be happy to know that if the feature film does happen they.ll stick with the established storylines. Instead of changing how...
