Washington journalism veteran Dana Bash will take over CNN’s weekday broadcast of “Inside Politics,” giving the network mainstay her first weekday anchoring assignment in nearly three decades at the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed network.
Bash will take over the program from John King, whose facility with a digital technology known as CNN’s “Magic Wall” that is used heavily during election coverage has expanded his overall profile. King will lead a new reporting project focused on voters in key battleground states as the 2024 presidential campaign cycle gets underway.
Bash will continue as co-anchor of the Sunday political talk program “State of the Union,” along with Jake Tapper. King is expected to continue to play a significant role in CNN’s coverage of elections.
Placing her at the noontime program is the latest maneuver in a wholesale reworking of the bulk of CNN’s daytime schedule under CEO Chris Licht.

Anthony Anderson presented Legend and the segment, saying, “It never feels like the right time to say goodbye to a loved one, a friend or a cherished icon.”
He added. “To quote Shakespeare, ‘All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players, they have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts.’ As we acknowledge the legends within our industry will pass on, we celebrate all that they created and shared with the world. May they rest in peace and power.”

Bernard Shaw, who was the lead anchor at CNN for two decades, died Wednesday, September 7, from non-Covid-related pneumonia at age 82, according to his family. He retired from CNN in 2001. He was one of the very first Black anchors of a network evening news show. Shaw began his television broadcasting career as an anchor and reporter for Wnus in Chicago in 1964. He worked as the White House correspondent in the Washington Bureau of CBS News from 1971 to 1977. Shaw then moved to ABC News, where he left to join CNN in 1980. His coverage of the assassination attempt of Ronald Reagan in 1971 helped to establish CNN in the station’s early days. Due to Shaw listening to a police scanner, it had beaten the other networks in announcing the shooting of Reagan by four whole minutes. (Credit: Mark Mainz/Getty Images) Shaw also moderated the 1988 presidential election debates where he questioned anti-death penalty Democratic nominee Michael Dukakis,...

This podcast focuses on Criterion’s Eclipse Series of DVDs. Hosts David Blakeslee and Trevor Berrett give an overview of each box and offer their perspectives on the unique treasures they find inside. In this first episode of a two-part series, David and Trevor are joined by Pablo Knote to discuss two films (Black Sun and Thirst for Love) from Eclipse Series 28: The Warped World of Koreyoshi Kurahara.
About the films:
Over the course of his varied career, Koreyoshi Kurahara made meticulous noirs, jazzy juvenile-delinquency pictures, and even nature films. His free-form approach to moviemaking was perfectly suited to the radical spirit of the 1960s, when he was one of the biggest hit makers working at the razzle-dazzle, youth-oriented Nikkatsu studios. The five films collected here hail from that era of the Japanese New Wave, and encompass breathless teen escapades, cruel crime stories, a Yukio Mishima adaptation, and even a Hollywood-inspired romantic comedy.

Adding laughter is one of the best things an actor can do to take a performance from safe to spectacular. Whether in a comedy or a drama, great actors sprinkle laughter throughout their performances—not necessarily guffaws (although they're wonderful too), but social laughs masking nervousness, laughs to release tension, or laughs that come from an eagerness to please, for instance. Laughter is the social grease of human beings. Watch how often people around you laugh. You will be amazed how seldom we laugh because something is funny. The comedian Bob Newhart said, "Laughter gives us distance. It allows us to step back from an event, deal with it, and then move on."Make Unexpected ChoicesI called my book "How to Make Your Audience Fall in Love With You" because every actor needs to make appealing choices. Well, there is nothing more appealing than humor. Whether the laughs arise from...

LAS VEGAS -- Media magnate Ted Turner spoke out against soft news and industry consolidation at the opening address of the National Association of Television Program Executives here on Tuesday. Citing issues ranging from nuclear disarmament to environmental protection, Turner noted the urgent need for quality news programming in a Q&A with Bernard Shaw, former anchor of CNN, the network Turner founded as part of his Turner Broadcasting empire. "A little less Hollywood news and a little more hard news would be good for our democracy," Turner said. In typical Turner fashion, he spoke seriously about an issue one minute then joked around the next, at one point likening the popularity of Fox News Channel to that of Adolph Hitler in 1930s Germany. (Fox News was quick to respond to Turner's comment Tuesday morning. "Ted is understandably bitter, having lost his ratings, his network and now his mind," a channel spokesperson said. "We wish him well".)...
