After shooting the Taylor Swift documentary Miss Americana, deconstructing another pop icon in Brooke Shields was an organic segue for filmmaker Lana Wilson. The director is up for a Primetime Emmy nomination in Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program for the Hulu/ABC News docuseries Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields.
Wilson’s agent first brought the opportunity of a Brooke Shields doc to her attention after the concept was in the works via Alexandra Wentworth and George Stephanopoulos, who have a production deal at ABC News. Wilson tells us why the time was finally prime for Shields to tell all.

A version of this interview with Brooke Shields and “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields” director Lana Wilson originally ran in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Brooke Shields was once the most famous teenager in the world. A model at 11 months old, by high school she had played a child prostitute in Louis Malle’s controversial 1978 film “Pretty Baby” and starred in a series of provocative Calvin Klein jeans ads in which she uttered the now iconic line, “You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.” Over the years, Shields has fielded no shortage of offers to tell her story on camera, but she wasn’t comfortable doing so until now, with “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” directed by Lana Wilson (“Miss Americana”) and exec-produced by Ali Wentworth and George Stephanopoulos. Brooke Sheilds takes control of the narrative by sharing her story in her own words in the Hulu documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, from director Lana Wilson.
From Matador Content and BedBy8 for ABC News Studio, the film follows Shields from her early years as a blossoming model and actress to her present day as a powerful woman, mother, wife and performer with a career spanning more than four decades. It also touches on her complicated relationship with her mother and manager Teri Shields and how working on early projects including Louis Malle’s Pretty Baby, Randal Kleiser’s The Blue Lagoon and Franco Zeffirelli’s Endless Love — all before age 16 — left her vulnerable to public criticism and unwanted attention from adult men.

Brooke Shields was pretty, even as a baby. Everyone knew it at the time, from her mother and manager, Teri Shields, to the grown men who were eager to get her nude in front of a camera from the age of ten to the legions of fans who felt a sense of ownership over her body. In the new two-part Hulu documentary “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” Shields’ beauty frames the story like a sort of creation myth, at once simple and strange; she was born beautiful, and from that beauty sprung an entire world.

Brooke Shields reflected on her relationship with her mother and former manager, Teri Shields, and her notorious lawsuit against photographer Garry Gross during a Tuesday appearance on “The Howard Stern Show.” The appearance follows the release of her Hulu documentary “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields.”
“She had this like crazy justification for things,” the actress said of her mother putting her in nude photoshoots at a young age. “She believed that as long as she was in my personal life, keeping me safe and virginal and pure and all that, that she was sparing me.”
Shields, who participated in a nude photoshoot for the Playboy Press publication Sugar ‘n’ Spice at 10 years old in 1975, sued Gross in an effort to keep the pictures hidden. But they were eventually published years later.
“He waited till I was famous to do it, too, which was just gross,” Shields said.

“Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” a documentary about Brooke Shields and the sexual objectification she endured as a child actor, arrives on Hulu today.
In the two-part documentary, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, the actor and model opens up for the first time about her earliest experiences in Hollywood. The film tracks her rise as a child advertising model to her sexualization in movies, starting at age 12, in “Pretty Baby” (1978), and then at 15, in “The Blue Lagoon” (1980).
“I spent my life owing people things and doing whatever they wanted,” Shields says in a new teaser dropped Wednesday morning. “I finally asked myself, ‘What will I be if I don’t allow that anymore?'”
Shields’ experience with older men on set as a child is a common theme in her recollections.

Brooke Shields was one of the top actors of the 1980s when she was still in her teens and early 20s. That rapid ascent to success in wide-release films came at a cost. Her first movie, the 1978 coming-of-age film Pretty Baby, told a story that triggered widespread controversy centered on Shields.
Her mom, Teri Shields, was largely blamed for allowing 11-year-old Brooke to appear in the sexually-charged film. That narrative largely persisted in the decades since. But how does Brooke Shields herself view Teri’s approach to managing her career as a child actor?
Brooke Shields became famous for playing Violet in ‘Pretty Baby’
The idea that Shields had to struggle to get over her role in Pretty Baby has never quite gone away. It makes some intuitive sense; the movie cast her as a child sex worker, a concept that is uncomfortable to contemplate in the most basic sense.

From the moment Brooke Shields was born, she was defined by her looks. "She's the most beautiful child and I'm going to help her with her career," her mother Teri Shields once said, determined to make her young daughter a star (via Emirates Woman). After appearing in an Ivory Soap ad as a baby, Brooke Shields' delicate and striking features catapulted her to fame.
Teri Shields had a paradoxical grip on her daughter, exploiting her as "sexually provocative and exciting while attempting to preserve her innocence" through overprotection (via The Washington Post). This took a psychological toll on Brooke Shields, causing her to question her identity, sexuality, and womanhood for years — worsened when put through the objectifying prism of Hollywood.

No one would ever consider model and actress Brooke Shields fat. No one, that is, except the star’s own famously controlling, alcoholic mother, Teri Shields. "My mother would get drunk and say, 'Why don’t you move your fat ass,'" Brooke, 53, recalled recently. "So I’ve always believed I had a fat ass." Brooke struggled with her self-image, she says, even as she posed for magazines like Vogue. "I was a cover girl, not a supermodel," she says. "I was ‘neck up’ and always described as 'athletic.'" While Brooke today is still fit with an enviable body she takes care of — she recently posed in a knockout red bikini for a Swimsuits for All campaign — it took time to overcome her early insecurities. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) "I’d spent my life being worried that my mother was going to die," she recalls of Teri’s alcoholism.

Brooke Shields says her late mother didn't deserve the criticism she received for the controversial career moves Brooke made early in her career, such as playing a child prostitute in Pretty Baby and posing for a suggestive Calvin Klein campaign. Teri Shields died Oct. 31 of complications from a long battle with dementia. "The bubble she created around me was the biggest blessing she could have given me," said Shields, who won People's Choice Awards for Favorite Young Motion...

A childhood spent acting and modeling is an experience Brooke Shields knows all too well. It is, however, one that her two daughters will not be sharing with their mother.
“It’s a high like you can’t imagine. It’s like a drug,” she says of the entertainment business in the April issue of Ladies Home Journal.
“But no, I don’t want them involved. Every day you’re told what you are not: You’re not short enough, you’re not thin enough, you’re not pretty enough. You’re always losing out.

Back in 1975, Teri Shields allowed her young daughter, Brooke, to be photographed nude. Years later, that photo session is causing controversy.

Looks like the National Enquirer is crying uncle in its beef with Brooke Shields. The actress threatened legal action and initiated a police investigation last month after a reporter for the tabloid, claiming to be a family friend, checked Shields' ailing mother out of a New Jersey nursing home, ostensibly as fodder for a story. Teri Shields, 75, suffers from dementia—something the actress was reluctantly forced to disclose in the wake of the Enquirer's actions. Brooke Shields has reached an agreement with the bosses of a U.S. tabloid after threatening to sue over accusations a reporter checked her elderly mother out of a nursing home for an interview.
Shields was left fuming after her mother, Teri, who suffers from dementia, was allegedly removed from her assisted living centre in New Jersey for lunch with a journalist from the National Enquirer.
The actress accused the reporter of leaving the 75 year old alone in the restaurant, and threatened to hit the publication with legal action over the incident.
But now Shields has come to an agreement with newspaper bosses - the tabloid will refrain from printing a story about the star's mother and publish an apology instead. Newspaper bosses will also make a donation to charity in order to settle the matter.
Shields's attorney, Gerald B. Lefcourt, tells People.com, "Two weeks ago, Brooke Shields was forced to make a public disclosure about her mother Teri Shields' health, when we learned that Mrs. Shields had been taken out of a care facility by a reporter and photographer working for the National Enquirer, and I was told that the National Enquirer was going to print information about her condition and whereabouts.
"I am very pleased to report that (the) National Enquirer was prevailed upon not to publish a story. Further, it has or will be apologising publicly. Finally, it has agreed to make a generous donation to further research on dementia and to encourage others to do so. I am glad that Brooke Shields and her family can consider the matter now closed."...
