- Production-designer, primarily and most importantly for pre-world-war-two German expressionist theatre, later changed his style and started to design his sets more realistically/naturalistically in the late 1930s and 40s.
- Trained scene painting in Aachen, Germany. Attended school for arts and crafts to train his skills
- Met director Richard Weichert during his engagement in Mannheim. The two of them worked closely together throughout the 1910s and 1920s.
- He was influenced by the reforming theories of Adolphe Appia and Edward Gordon Craig
