His death was announced by UTA vice chairman Jay Sures in a memo to staffers obtained by Deadline.
Leibner began his agency career in the 1960s as co-founder, with Nate Bienstock, of the New York-based firm N.S. Bienstock, which was acquired by UTA in 2014. Leibner retired in 2021.
“Richard will be remembered as the agent who transformed the news business,” Sures wrote in the memo. “Decades ago, he made it his personal mission to see that big name news stars should be treated and compensated like traditional movie and television stars. Anderson Cooper has spent much of his career roaming the globe, documenting the kind of stories few others are eager to cover — disease, natural disasters, genocide, war. Comfort has never been his mainstay.
But he has his moments.
In 2008, Cooper traveled to Cameroon for the CNN docuseries Planet in Peril, looking for bush hunters whom epidemiologists were following in their study of viruses that jump from animals to humans, with his longtime executive producer Charlie Moore, CNN chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta and Gupta’s producer.
Their temporary headquarters was a ramshackle hut deep in the jungle with no cell service. Once there, they split up to find bush hunters and made a plan to reunite at the hut. Gupta and his producer returned, but didn’t find Cooper and Moore there, and worried all night about his friends in the wild. Only the next day did he wake up...

There could be an A+ job in the news business waiting for the CBS producer known to many, simply, as “Z.”
Susan Zirinsky, often referred to by the first letter of her last name. has been at CBS News since 1972, but it’s what she might do in 2018 and going forward that could be infinitely more interesting.
She has amassed an impressive list of accomplishments during her CBS tenure, but they have had nothing to do with the network’s venerable newsmagazine “60 Minutes.” Zirinksy currently oversees the long-running program “48 Hours,” but also has supervised award-winning documentaries and breaking news specials. She even served as the inspiration for Holly Hunter’s high-standards news producer in the 1987 film “Broadcast News.”
She knows what it takes to keep a mature brand modern. In 2015, she tested a limited-run podcast to accompany one of the hour-long crime stories that regularly air on “48 Hours.

It has been quite a week for figures in the national news media. The scandal regarding Brian Williams and his issues with the facts and truth continues to unfold, Jon Stewart announced he was leaving "The Daily Show" later this year, veteran CBS journalist Bob Simon was tragically killed in an accident, and last night, David Carr of The New York Times suddenly passed away. One of the most colorful, direct, and inspirational writers about the media landscape, Carr was unique among many others who also analyzed the vast landscape of movies, television, technology and beyond. But perhaps it was no more fitting a tribute to his legacy that he died on a day when he was busy as ever. Earlier on Thursday, Carr moderated a talk at the New School with "Citizenfour" director Laura Poitras, journalist Glenn Greenwald, and Edward Snowden. And today, it has been made available in full.

The late David Carr and Bob Simon had different beats but still had much in common: Both were classic, fearless, old school journalists who stayed at the top of their craft for decades, winning plenty of awards for their work... but more importantly, the respect of both their readers and those in the industry. There has been a lot of chatter -- jokes, tweets, rueful speculation -- noting the paradox of Brian Williams' forced six-month leave from the anchor chair at "NBC Nightly News" and Jon Stewart's near-simultaneous announcement of his retirement from "The Daily Show," but the biggest irony may be this one: we all care who'll replace Stewart (if, indeed, anyone can) but aren't the least bit concerned with who's replacing Williams (Lester Holt, as it turns out). And the reason is simple: we consider fake newsman Stewart accountable, while we hold no such expectations for real newsman Williams.
The truth is, Stewart and Williams -- who seem like pals whenever the latter visits the former's show -- have a lot more in common than either would probably like to admit. They're both from Jersey, both telegenic, both funny. Indeed, it's Williams' efforts to be amusing that seem to have led to his undoing.
