1996’s animated show Superman: The Animated Series was widely loved by fans, and it wasn’t just because of its storyline. Written by Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Stan Berkowitz, and Rich Fogel and developed by Burnett and Bruce Timm, the series also earned massive fan approval for how it paid homage to some real legends.

One of these was none other than the late renowned mastermind Jack Kirby, who earned a ‘cameo’ in the very episode of the series that comic writer cum artist Alex Ross thanked the showrunners for.

What do "Happy Days" and "M*A*S*H" have in common? Well, for one thing, they're both era-defining TV shows of the 1970s that took place in the 1950s. "M*A*S*H" was set during the Korean War (even if its satirical target was the more recent Vietnam War), which unfolded from 1950 to 1953. It's a well-known joke that thanks to its 11-season run (1972 to 1983), the series lasted longer than the war it was set in.
That's not the only historical incongruity in "M*A*S*H" — there's a small but telling one in season 4, episode 21, "The Novocaine Mutiny," as first noted in "TV's M*A*S*H: The Ultimate Guide Book" by Ed Solomonson and Mark O'Neill. In this episode, Major Frank Burns (Larry Linville) is left in command and predictably behaves like a tyrant. He begins searching officers' quarters for "stolen" (actually gambled) money. When he gets to Radar's (Gary Burghoff) office,...

Exclusive: Netflix has picked up worldwide rights to true-crime feature documentary, Man On The Run, about the 1Mdb scandal and one of the fund’s alleged masterminds, international fugitive Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low.
The film charts the story of the enigmatic businessman and playboy. Working with former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, Low orchestrated a scheme to exploit 1Mdb, a sovereign wealth fund established in 2009 initially with the purpose of benefiting the people of Malaysia.
However, in 2015 the journalist Clare Rewcastle-Brown received leaked financial documents, setting off a global investigation that uncovered that vast sums of money were being funneled into international bank accounts to help fuel Low’s extravagant lifestyle. This included the acquisition of lavish properties, a private jet, a super-yacht, opulent parties with A-list celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, allegedly paying stars huge sums for appearances, and dating supermodels.

This post contains spoilers for Blue Beetle.
Even ten years ago, few would have guessed that the Blue Beetle would be in a movie, let alone the star of one. Both the current Blue Beetle Jamie Reyes and his predecessor Ted Kord have been fan favorites since the 80s, when the latter became a member of Justice League International. But Blue Beetle is hardly the only DC Comics deep cut in the film.
Throughout the movie, the villainous Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon) touts her company’s newest invention, a battle suit termed Omac, which stands for One Man Army Corps. Created by Jack Kirby during his time at DC Comics in the 1970s, Omac is one of the legendary artist’s strangest characters, someone who has been radically reimagined several times since his first appearance.
Omac made his debut in 1974’s Omac #1, written and penciled by Kirby, with letters and inks by Mike Royer.

Last week, I was rewatching Spider-man: Into The Spiderverse (2018) before going for the sequel. When the mandatory Stan Lee cameo scene appeared, my immediate thought was how I was going to miss seeing the man doing his thing for one minute while watching Across The Spiderverse. For a lot of people around the world, Stan Lee used to be the goofy old guy who cameoed in every single Marvel movie until his death back in December 2018. He made one posthumous appearance in Avengers: Endgame (2019), but even after that, the MCU managed to find creative ways to pay tribute to Lee in many of their projects.
Lee’s legacy goes far beyond the MCU, of course. It’s safe to say that the man will forever be remembered as the person who made Marvel Comics what it is. A documentary on the man’s life was long-time due, and we finally have it,...

Face front, true believers! Here’s an interesting lil’ tidbit about the current cinema landscape. Just who has been the major part of several huge box office hits over the last fifteen years? Well, we’re not talking about an actor, or a filmmaker, or a studio exec. Oh, and he left the planet almost five years ago. Okay, you got it, I’m talking about the comic book writing superstar who co-created almost the entire staple of Marvel superheroes. And he became a fun bit of business in the screen adaptations of those characters by popping up in brief cameo roles (I made it a game with my nephews to nudge me when he flashed that big grin). He’s been profiled by several TV newsmagazine shows and mini-bios, but now he’s getting the full feature-length documentary treatment with the simply titled Stan Lee. Excelsior!

“Stan Lee” — a documentary on the man who, along with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, created Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, Black Panther and many other iconic Marvel characters —
selectively focuses on the comic book legend’s career and, to a much lesser extent, his personal life, pruning considerable information about his other ventures and legal disputes as seen on Wikipedia. It’s co-produced by Marvel Studios, so the film, which receives its world premiere at Tribeca Festival and streams on Disney Plus on June 16, expectedly sings his praises.
Lee himself posthumously supplies the first-person voiceover narration, albeit indirectly through various archival interviews and speeches given over the years, which filmmaker David Gelb (“Jiro Dreams of Sushi”) has carefully spliced together based on the chronology of seminal events in his lifetime. To illustrate the narration, Gelb has employed conventional archival footage and photos as well as not-so-conventional comic strips and clay figures.

When characters have been around for decades, a number of people tend to leave their creative fingerprints on them. For example, Captain America was created in 1940 by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby for Timely Comics. He was a World War II soldier that went above and beyond the call of duty to aid in the fight against the Axis powers, particularly the Nazis. Later, when the company transitioned to Marvel, Stan Lee brought Cap into the modern day in 1963's "The Avengers" #4 as part of the popular super team. From there, a number of extremely talented people like Ed Brubaker, Mark Gruenwald, Roger Stern, Mark Waid, and Ta-Nehisi Coates have crafted character-defining stories for the Star-Spangled Man With A Plan. But as a character goes from creator to creator, they may change slightly. While it's certainly possible for people (fictional or otherwise) to be multifaceted in their personalities, those changes...

Ethan Peck's first professional acting credit came in 1995 with an appearance on the short-lived ABC crime drama "Charlie Grace" with Mark Harmon and Leelee Sobieski. He was nine. At age 13, he appeared in the Olson Twins vehicle "Passport to Paris" before landing a notable gig as the young Kelso in flashback scenes on "That '70s Show." This would only be the first time Peck would play a "legacy" character. In addition to Kelso, Peck inherited the role of Patrick Verona from Heath Ledger in the TV adaptation of "10 Things I Hate About You."
The most notable legacy character in Peck's career to date has, of course, been Spock from "Star Trek," a role he inherited from Leonard Nimoy. Peck's version of Spock fills out the character's backstory for the decade immediately prior to the events of the original series, wherein audiences learned that he had a long lost...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses a few plot developments in “The Sandman,” currently streaming on Netflix.
When viewers watch the ending credits for Netflix’s new series “The Sandman” — the long-anticipated adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed graphic novel series chronicling the phantasmagoric exploits of Morpheus, aka Dream, aka the Sandman (Tom Sturridge) — they’ll behold the curious sight of the logo for DC Entertainment. Indeed, “The Sandman” was published by Vertigo, an imprint of DC Comics, from 1989 to 1996, and in the first two volumes, which make up Season 1 of the Netflix series, there are several direct references to and characters from the wider world of DC Comics.
Much of those connections and references, however, have either been significantly altered or stripped away entirely from the live-action adaptation of “The Sandman.” For example, in the graphic novel, the villain John Dee (David Thewlis) is living within Arkham Asylum, Gotham City...

Three years have passed since Chris Evans wielded the shield of Captain America. For many Marvel fans, Evans best embodied the altruistic vision that Jack Kirby and Joe Simon had for their pro-America and pro-Jewish character. After starring as Cap for eight years, Evans has become synonymous with the WWII-based hero and his storied legacy. But before the Massachusetts-born and bred actor slung on the stars and stripes for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Evans built a solid acting resume that showcased his action star capacity, rom-com talents, and intuitive knack for playing a frat boy-inspired idiot.
At first glance, Evans' acting roles might seem like a hodgepodge of credits. How...

Legend. Pioneer. Innovator. Influencer. These are all admirable words to describe Neal Adams, but I think there is one that is all-encompassing of the man and the talent and that word is; Giant. In one of the first Wizard magazines I read they were doing a retrospective on his Batman work. The piece opened by describing Adams as barrel-chested and saying how much they thought he could still bench press despite his advancing years. This always stuck with and then the more I learnt about him and saw him speaking online he became a gentle giant to me.
Neal Adams had a long career taking in a number of interesting stops as well as all the well known comic work. A New York native who grew up all around the globe, by being the son of a military family. He would return to The Big Apple to graduate from the...

When I was younger, so much, much younger than today, Marvel published an epic called “Secret Empire.” It ran in Captain America for seven months back in 1974 and was a classic.
In 2017, not only was I much, much, much older, but Marvel ran another Secret Empire saga. This one ran even more months and made people with class sick.
Yes, that’s an over simplification and not completely accurate. There were many people who didn’t like this Secret Empire, so the odds are in favor of some of them having class. Still, while it’s true that there’s no accounting for taste, I just can’t make anyone liking this story add up. And it’s not because I have no taste for accounting.
The premise of Secret Empire boiled down to this; Captain America’s sworn enemy the Red Skull had a sentient Cosmic Cube, which identified...

I’ve said it many times in various reviews, but I’ve been a huge Captain America fan for over 40 years. Superman has always been my favourite character, but Captain America is a close second. I think it was growing up as a fan of American pop culture in general. You don’t get more American than Superman and Captain America, right? I’ve always had a love as well of comics history, of characters that connect the present to the past, and Cap is comic book royalty. Created by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon back in 1941,he’s been a Timely and Marvel Comics mainstay ever since, albeit with a brief rest in the 1950’s when unless you were a western, true crime, or romance character, you were surplus to requirements. So, what makes Cap tick? What’s made him who he is?...

This Friday, Disney+ starts the next step in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Spinning out of the Captain America movies, the series follows the character’s two best friends working together (albeit reluctantly) to fill the void left from Chris Evans leaving the series. One of these heroes is Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, as played by Sebastian Stan.
Bucky is an interesting part of Marvel history. He predates most characters in the MCU, created during World War II in Cap’s very first appearance by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby as a blatant Robin knockoff. We were going to shoot it live action, but then we were presented with how big the budget would be to kill different men in different eras, and we were going over it.”

SandalwoodThe film is modern in its thought, execution and portrayal of characters, including the cameos. Aravind ShwethaOn one side there are filmmakers exploring different subjects to bring to the silver screen. Then there are a crop of makers who have stuck to the formula of making films around subjects that are tried and tested before. Aadi-Lakshmi Purana is an example of the latter. Call it a cliché, but the romcom is one of the most popular genres among the young and old alike. So, it is savored and accepted warmly, as long as it is served tastefully with the right elements. Aadi Lakshmi Purana is a whimsical film that stands out for numerous reasons. Just because the title has "purana" in it, the audience need not fret about it being another age-old story. The legacy of Edgar Allen Poe is, no surprise, a weird one. The author of The Raven remains a household name almost 170 years after his mysterious death but somehow Poe’s most enduring literary innovation (he invented the detective story) is widely overlooked. The Boston-born writer’s lurid death at age 40 while passing through Baltimore remains an unsolved mystery but its local infamy led to the Baltimore Ravens, the only NFL squad named after a poem.
Poe’s legacy is only getting weirder these days with Ahoy Comics and its comics magazine series Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter of Terror, an admirably bizarre concoction that is equal parts Tales from the Crypt and Drunk History. The boozy author retells his tales of horror and mystery and things get (you guessed it) pretty weird.
Today, Deadline has an exclusive first look at the cover for issue No 1 for upcoming Season Two...

After years of trying to get a film adaptation of Sandman made, creator Neil Gaiman is set to produce a series adaptation of his classic comic for Netflix! David Goyer is also set to produce the series alongside Gaiman, and Allan Heinberg is set to write the show and serve as showrunner.
This series comes three years after New Line Cinema failed to bring the graphic novel to the big screen with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. While I would have loved to see that get made, Sandman will work great as a series! According to THR, “Netflix has signed what sources describe as a massive financial deal with Warner Bros. Television to adapt the best-seller into a live-action TV series.”
It also explained that the deal is “the most expensive TV series that DC Entertainment has ever done.” Eric Heisserer, the last screenwriter who worked on New Line's adaptation, said a...
