As directorial head-to-heads go, Jack Huston versus Stanley Kubrick isn’t anyone’s idea of a fair fight. But that’s exactly the clash the actor and Hollywood scion sets up for himself in his directorial debut “Day of the Fight” — named for Kubrick’s famous 1951 documentary short of the same title, and likewise following an Irish-American boxer through his daily New York routine, in the hours leading up to a climactic evening match. At 108 minutes to Kubrick’s 12, Huston’s fiction feature has bulk on its side, which isn’t quite the same as weight: Padding out its episodic day-in-the-life structure with a stakes-raising melodramatic backstory, “Day of the Fight” lunges for the tear ducts while never quite ringing true, rooted less in real life than in the tradition of countless underdog boxing dramas that have gone before.

For his feature directorial debut, Day of the Fight, Jack Huston has reteamed with his former Boardwalk Empire colleague Michael Pitt to tell the story a once celebrated boxer who takes a redemptive journey through his past and present on the day of his first bout since leaving prison.
Huston also wrote and produces the movie which premiered to a warm and extended reception in the Horizons Extra section of Venice on Tuesday night. An experienced and award-winning actor, Huston was effusive in his excitement for the process of making Day of the Fight when we spoke ahead of the festival.
In the interview below, which has been condensed and edited for clarity, he tells me why lightning had to strike in order for him to get behind the camera, how he “called in every favor” to pull together a cast that also includes Joe Pesci, and why he’s...

Filmmaker Billy Luther makes his narrative feature debut at SXSW on Saturday with “Frybead Face and Me,” executive produced by Taika Waititi. Inspired by his childhood, the film follows a young boy, Benny (Keir Tallman), who has to spend the summer with his grandma on the reservation.
Luther, whose past work includes the documentary “Miss Navajo” and AMC’s “Dark Winds,” feels Benny’s story of learning about rez life and bonding with his cousin Frybread (Charley Hogan) has universal appeal in that it’s ultimately about being somewhere new and feeling alone.
“You don’t have to be Native to connect to the story because everyone remembers being dropped off somewhere, and the story brings that familiarity,” Luther says.
Still, it was incredibly important to Luther to cast Navajo actors, a process that was complicated by the Covid-19 pandemic. But, he eventually found his stars in Tallman and Hogan,...

The Perfect Guy‘s marketing campaign doesn’t do the self-consciously campy stalker-thriller (a less over-the-top but still ideal double billing with last January’s The Boy Next Door) any favors – its tagline, “Trust One, Fear the Other,” promises a tastelessly regressive sort of love triangle in which two possessive men clash violently over the affections of a lady love. That’s not the kind of film, in a year that’s already delivered some of the decade’s most indelible female characters (in fare as diverse yet mainstream as Ex Machina, Mad Max: Fury Road, Spy and Inside Out), many critics are chomping at the bit to sample.
Luckily, this is one of those rare Hollywood productions with surprises in store, most notably lead actress Sanaa Lathan, who takes a simple harangued-heroine part and draws out of it enough charisma and complexity to elevate the entire movie above the...

Like a moth to flame, during SXSW I will flock toward Franklin BBQ. I have more in common with Ace Reporter's "Stick To" music video than I thought. Directed by Austin-based Peter Simonite and Annie Gunn, "Stick To" personifies one of the weirder winged insects and puts him on a bike; he's drawn to a light in an apartment, who as it ends up is Alex Gehring from rock band Ringo Deathstarr. Watch the video below, then watch our exclusive behind-the-scenes commentary video below it. Simonite and Gunn describe the process of sending their human-moth out into the streets, and just how he got his dusty aura: with the help of ashes collected from Franklin's barbeque pits. Gunn and Simonite were also behind Immaculate Noise favorite Explosions in the Sky's short film "Postcard from 1952"; the latter director also helmed another clip from a popular Austin band -- Spoon --...

The Ann Arbor Film Festival, having survived their half-a-century blowout in 2012, is back with another rip-roarin’ 51st edition in 2013, which will run from March 19-24, screening a mind-boggling amount of experimental short films and a few features.
Highlights of the fest include:
Special presentations by this year’s jurors, including Marcin Gizycki round-up of Polish animation from the 1950s to the present; Laida Lertxundi’s selection of some of her films as well as her biggest influences; and Kevin Jerome Everson’s mini-retrospective of his own films.
There’s also special tributes to Pat O’Neill, including a retrospective of his short films from the ’70s to the present as well as a screening of his 1989 35mm experimental epic Water and Power; Suzan Pitt, with selections of short films from her career; and a screening of Ken Burns’ latest doc The Central Park Five, co-directed with his daughter Sarah Burns and son-in-law David McMahon,...

Three thirtysomething buddies reunite for a funeral in a sleepy Massachusetts fishing hamlet in Tom O’Brien’s finely tuned Fairhaven. They beat about the shores of this southeastern Massachusetts town in the dead of brutal winter, one which ace Dp Peter Simonite photographs in such a way as to chill the bones of attentive audience members–even ones who don’t find themselves, or this movie, which debuts today both theatrically and on VOD, in a typically over air-conditioned modern movie house. Close knit and working class, the milieu of O’Brien’s movie is at once confining and comforting for its three leads. Jon …...

Here's the latest Austin and Texas film news.

The Texas-bred, post-rock musicians in Explosions in the Sky are known for an expansive sound that seems to fill any space, be it one person's headphones as they navigate their workday, a living room where "Friday Night Lights" reruns are being watched (the band scored the series) or an entire Hollywood cemetery .
In the new video for "Postcard From 1952" -- premiering exclusively on HuffPost Entertainment -- their music plays soundtrack to some of life's most tender moments: a baby's early steps, a mother photographing her child, flowers in a young girl's hair, a couple's kiss.
"Postcard" is off Take Care, Take Care, Take Care (sort of like Drake, times three), which was released in late April of last year. Drummer Chris Hrasky told HuffPost that it wasn't until this last album that they felt comfortable making videos for their songs.

Full disclosure: We're big fans of Austin-based Explosions in the Sky, a band whose soundtracks have been featured in films like "Friday Night Lights," "The Diving Bell and Butterfly" and "All the Real Girls." So we're premiering this trailer for the video for their song "Postcard From 1952" (from their 2011 album "Take Care, Take Care, Take Care"), as co-directed by Peter Simonite (a 2nd unit cinematographer on "Tree of Life") and Annie Gunn. We think it's a great tease for the video to come, which will be released next Monday. And of course all of this is in advance of Explosions in the Sky's upcoming tour, which starts next month. Enjoy.

Ritchie Wheeler ("Deadgirl"'s Shiloh Fernandez), is a bright young kid who works at the local skating rink, has a crush on his best friend's sister (Ashley Greene), and is searching for some direction and purpose in his life. He's like a lot of small town kids, goes to parties, has a little trouble at home, tries to do the right thing, etc. And his days of carefree wandering are inevitably coming to an end.
Anthony Burns' "Skateland" is an early 80's coming of age story, one that will inspire a bit of deja vu for anyone who's seen "Dazed and Confused", Richard Linklater's 70's-set ode to feathered hair and cut-off jeans. But, unlike "Dazed", which proved a smart director can breathe new life into a worn-out genre, "Skateland...
