There was a lot of uproar when Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the man who directed the 2017 film Arjun Reddy, remade as Kabir Singh in Hindi, said that his next film was going to show people what violence in films truly was. Now, he seems to be a money-minded filmmaker first, which is why he got Ranbir Kapoor, one of the biggest names in Hindi cinema, to star as the protagonist of allegedly his most violent film, Animal. It was released not long ago, and the general reception was divided. Some said the film is quite misogynistic, glorifying toxic masculinity, while others were mad that the film wasn’t as violent as they had hoped it would be. Any way you spin it, it has to be said that Vanga really milked the climate around his third directorial venture. He put loads of digestible and stylized violence in the movie and a great cast,...

Sony Group Corporation has initiated a Singapore arbitration case against Indian TV giant Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel), alleging breaches of their failed merger agreement, Variety has confirmed.
The $10 billion merger, which would have seen the two entities merge their TV and streaming businesses in India, was terminated on Monday by Sony after a two-year process.
Sony is seeking a $90 million termination fee from Zeel. Zeel has “initiated appropriate legal action” to contest all Sony’s claims at the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, the company said in a regulatory filing to India’s National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange on Wednesday. In the filing, Zeel said that the merger had been greenlit by the National Company Law Tribunal (Nclt) and that Sony’s “claim for termination fee is legally untenable and has no basis whatsoever.” Zeel added that it has called upon Sony to “immediately withdraw the termination and...

The repercussions of Dr. Bishop's departure are still being felt at York Memorial Hospital.
As a result, no one was very comfortable in either their professional or their personal lives on Transplant Season 3 Episode 3
It would be easy to blame everything on Dr. Devi, who has been brought in to find and fix the problems within the Emergency Department.
Devi feels pressure to make changes quickly without taking sufficient time to observe and research the current situation.
She admitted to her partner on Transplant Season 3 Episode 2 that she feared she had made a mistake in uprooting her family and moving to Toronto.
The staff has been resistant to her suggestions to implement patient-driven care. What they've had wasn't perfect, but at least it was familiar.
Also, Devi isn't the paternal figure Bishop was, not by a long shot. She's approachable, all right, but she wants what she wants...

Indian tentpoles like “Rrr,” “Jawan” and “Pathaan” routinely get Imax releases in India, but not at the expense of Hollywood blockbusters. But when action star Salman Khan’s “Tiger 3” opens the weekend of Nov. 12 it will do just that. That means that Hollywood’s mid-November juggernauts “The Marvels” (opening Nov. 10) and “The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snake” (opening Nov. 17) will not have those premium auditoriums.
Instead, all 23 Imax theaters in India will be taken by “Tiger 3,” a Hindi-language action thriller starring Khan, who plays an Indian spy fighting a group of terrorists to clear his name.
“Indian tentpoles have been outperforming a lot of Hollywood blockbusters,” Jatinder Singh, an Indian box office expert and journalist, told TheWrap.
The Maneesh Sharma-directed “Tiger 3,” set in the same “Yrf Spy Universe” as “Pathaan” and the 2019 action hit “War,” is expected to continue a winning streak for Bollywood (Hindu-language) films.

Dr. Ritu Gagra happens to be one of the best-written characters in the latest Netflix original show, Kaala Paani. The makers introduced her as a supporting character. As the show progressed, her character became a crucial player. In the absence of Dr. Soudamini Singh, many officials and doctors relied on Ritu’s findings since the former shared plenty of input with Ritu before her passing.

Dr. Ritu’s character will be reminiscent of Harry Potter, who was seemingly kept in the dark about how to find the remaining Horcruxes after Albus Dumbledore’s passing. Harry eventually found all the answers based on the limited knowledge his professor shared with him. Dr. Ritu, who received a doctoral degree for her research on communicable diseases, was initially clueless. Characters with shades of gray and complexity are always welcome anytime they show up in web series or movies. It allows the audience to see these characters from a neutral point of view as they are often given a redemption arc, which the viewers eventually find satisfying. The best example would be Jaime Lannister in the show Game of Thrones. He went from being a highly unlikeable character to someone everyone sympathized with by the end of the series finale. Something similar could be said about Ketan Kamat in Kaala Paani.

One of the highlights of the Busan International Film Festival is its Open Cinema section. Its free screenings take place in the Biff Theater, an outdoor venue with room for hundreds of spectators. This year’s program included Thomas Cailley’s French sci-fi The Animal Kingdom; Revolver Lily, a Japanese period thriller starring Haruka Ayase as a super-assassin; and the Bollywood musical Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani / Rocky and Rani’s Love Story.
Directed by Bollywood veteran Karan Johar, Rocky and Rani pits two top stars––Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh––in a screwball romance that unfolds on a massive scale. Singh is Rocky, a “filthy rich” heir to a laddoo pastry fortune. Bhatt’s Rani hosts a controversial talk show where she defends liberal causes.
You know the formula: meet-cute, enormous song and dance, stupid argument, another gigantic song, eventual reconciliation followed by an even bigger production number.

The talents of Bollywood megastar Salman Khan and leading singer Arijit Singh will finally be united in Yash Raj Films’ “Tiger 3.”
Singh has sung two numbers for the film. “Leke Prabhu Ka Naam,” a dance number featuring Salman and Katrina Kaif releases next week, while the second song is a romantic track.
India deploys a practice known as playback singing where singers render songs that actors lip-sync to on screen. Via this method, Singh has been the on-screen singing voice of most of Bollywood’s top male stars including Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor among many others. He had yet to sing for Salman Khan, perhaps because of an alleged disagreement during an awards ceremony in 2014. Since then Singh has expressed publicly that he wants “to retire with at least one song of you [Salman Khan] in my library” and that has now happened.

Producing and releasing a medical/survival drama a year after the global pandemic ceased is a good call. This pandemic brought the world to a standstill, but at the same time, people were also going through chaotic times. Human beings changed their perspective about how life functions, and survival became their only goal. The pandemic also tested Charles Darwin’s theory of the survival of the fittest, and this phenomenon is the essence of the new Netflix India original Kaala Paani.

Netflix India has been rolling out some great content this year. Kohrra is easily one of the best shows so far in the Ott space. This was followed by the unprecedented success seen by Scoop, Guns & Gulaabs, and Choona. The streaming giant has, for the past few months, boasted of delivering shows in various subjects and genres that have captivated the audience. The brand new Kaala Paani is a callback to the 1996 Mohanlal starrer period film of the same name, directed by Priyadarshan. Meanwhile, this show is a medical drama set on Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is interesting to see Netflix India’s foraying into this genre, as there is already Disney+ Hotstar’s Humans and Amazon Prime Video’s Mumbai Diaries. Both are fine examples of good medical dramas.

India pulled another big win at the global box office. Shah Rukh Khan’s action-filled political melodrama “Jawan” has zoomed past $113 million worldwide in just over two weeks. With $112 million thus far, it now seems sure to pass the $130 million total of Skr’s “Pathan” to become the highest Bollywood earner ever. It may end up as the fourth-biggest Indian earner worldwide, behind only “Rrr,” “Kgf 2” and “Baahubali: The Conclusion.”
That makes two-for-two for Shah Rukh Khan, with a third film, “Dunki,” from “3 Idiots” director Raju Hirani arriving in December. Srk might release three movies in one year that end up becoming the first, second and third-biggest Bollywood films ever. That’s movie stardom on an unheard-of scale.
Considering Bollywood’s recent box office slump, Srk is almost single-handedly keeping it in the game.
The picture concerns a would-be Robin Hood committing public crimes to bring attention to pressing social issues.

Acorn TV has been killing it with its mystery dramas filmed across the pond, and its latest looks like another murder-filled winner.
The streaming service has shared a promo of the series premiere of Mrs Sidhu Investigates, and let's say we're hungry for more.
Mrs. Sidhu Investigates stars Meera Syal, Gurjeet Singh (Ackley Bridge), Craig Parkinson, and Naana Agyei-Ampadu (Death in Paradise).
Mrs Sidhu Investigates follows Mrs. Sidhu (Syal), a high-end caterer with a taste for crime who solves murders and other ghastly crimes amongst the affluent residents of Berkshire.
A lifetime of being an "Indian Aunty," invisible to the elite, has sharpened her skills as an investigator: an instinct for truth, a warmth with people and a persistent sense of nosiness.
Recently widowed, Mrs. Sidhu juggles her new catering business with wrangling her wayward son, Tez (Singh), all while serving up justice to those who believe they are above the law.

The quasi-narrator who bookends Tarsem Singh’s return to the big screen with the India-set Dear Jassi doesn’t quite know where to start his ripped-from-the-headlines true story-turned-folk-tale. His Juliet in the Canadian-raised Jassi (Pavia Sidhu), born to a good family that sends her back to their homeland to vacation with her cousin? His Romeo in the Punjabi-born but baptized Sikh, illiterate rickshaw driver / amateur athlete Mithu (Yugam Sood)? Or with the fateful meeting of these star-crossed lovers who serendipitously reside one street apart?
While the plot ultimately chooses the latter, it’s not before providing a glimpse of the future. Screaming. Abuse. Police. It’s a foreshadowing of the other shoe dropping almost 90 minutes before it does––a necessity for intrigue since that hour-and-a-half can’t help dragging in its familiar tale of forbidden, secretive love. In a perfect world Mithu would only have to ask for Jassi’s hand in marriage.

As I tell my students, choices have consequences. Brilliantly, several choices made by Mikles Morales and his friends come back to bite them in the ass in the wonderful, if bloated, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Out now from Sony Home Entertainment, the 2:20 film is merely part one of a more sprawling saga that is entirely built around Miles (Shameik Moore) making a decision in the previous film that has multiversal implications.
In fact, his repercussions have such omniversal impact that Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) has formed the Spider-Society with its core members traversing the multiverse to repair the damage (with a wonderful throwaway line about Doctor Strange).
Miles is blissfully unaware of this until another of his actions appears in the form of a new foe, the Spot (Jason Schwartzman), who is seen mastering his powers with growing confidence until he makes a mistake and enters himself and, therefore, the multiverse.

New Delhi, Aug 31 (Ians) In the alleged sexual harassment case against former Wrestling Federation of India (Wfi) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the complainant women wrestlers told a Delhi court on Friday that the allegations they levelled against him warrant framing of charges.
Six wrestlers put forth their arguments on framing of charges against Singh before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (Acmm), Harjeet Singh Jaspal, of Rouse Avenue Court.
The counsel for the wrestlers argued that Singh, a Bjp MP, and former Wfi Assistant Secretary Vinod Tomar were never exonerated by the oversight committee, adding that the panel — headed by ace boxer M.C. Mary Kom — was an “eyewash to assuage sentiments”.
Senior advocate Rebecca John, appearing for the wrestlers, said: “The allegations in the Fir culminating in the charge sheet of which your honour has taken cognisance are of a nature that necessitates the framing of charges against the accused persons.

Chennai, Aug 28 (Ians) The cruel act of barring an 8-year old little girl, Jasveen Kaur, from playing in the Under 11 Telangana state chess selection tournament by the Telangana State Chess Association (Tsca) President K.S.Prasad has intensified the ‘pawn/sepoy’ mutiny in the state.
Parents of several little chess players decided to boycott the Telangana Under 11 state selection tournament till Kaur was allowed to play the tournament. Now efforts are on to form chess associations in all the districts in the state and seek government recognition.
The national and state chess associations in India have been treating the upcoming chess players and their parents like pawns. The Delhi High Court has issued a directive to the filmmakers of the movie “Jailer” to ensure that from September 1, none of the theaters exhibit the jersey of the Ipl team Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb), as worn by a contract killer in one of the scenes in the film.
Justice Prathiba M Singh, who was hearing a suit filed by the Ipl team, Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited, against the filmmakers for using the team’s jersey in a denigratory manner, said that the Rajnikanth starrer’s release on television, satellite, or any Ott (Over-The-Top) platform shall have an altered version of the film prior to its release.
It is alleged that the contract killer in the film wearing the jersey reportedly makes derogatory and misogynistic statements about a woman. The Ipl team argued that the negative depiction using their jersey without permission could damage their brand image and equity.

New Delhi, Aug 23 (Ians) Former India off-spinner and selector, Sarandeep Singh feels that it would be wise for the visiting team to modify the lineup that secured victory in the previous match at the same venue. India has already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series against Ireland and would be keen to maintain a clean slate when the two teams meet in final T20 at the Malahide Cricket Club, Dublin, on Wednesday.
Singh urged the Indian team management to select uncapped wicketkeeper batter Jitesh Sharma and young pacer Avesh Khan for the third T20I against Ireland.

The Indian media landscape has been jolted by two largely expected, but nevertheless seismic, events in recent days — and aftershocks look inevitable.
The proposed merger between local powerhouse Zee Entertainment Enterprises and Sony’s Indian TV businesses has been nearly two years in the making, but finally cleared a key regulatory hurdle on Thursday. The combined companies have the potential to create a giant in broadcast TV — a sector that is still paramount in India — and are valued at $10 billion.
Last week’s other tremblor was news from Burbank that Disney+ Hotstar, India’s streaming market leader, had lost 12.5 million subscribers, following the loss of key sports rights to a competitor. While no surprise, the news confirmed that the Indian streaming market remains a difficult environment to achieve both scale and profitability.
The Sony-Zee merger is not final yet. India’s National Company Law Tribunal (Nclt) approved the merger last week,...
