The spectacle of Sam Raimi channeling his twisted “Evil Dead” side for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” reaches its peak with the climactic battle between Zombie Strange (the re-animated corpse of Benedict Cumberbatch’s titular wizard) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) at Mount Wundagore.
It’s a ghoulish sight to behold, with Strange’s decaying flesh and demonic black creatures curling around him to form a sinister version of his magical Cloak of Levitation. For Wētā FX, though, it was an opportunity to explore kitschy horror and figure out character beats with a director intent on shaking up the MCU.
“The promise of a spooky Sam Raimi Marvel film had our team pretty jazzed,” said the New Zealand studio’s VFX supervisor Erik Winquist (“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”). “It seemed on the page that this was channeling some of that B-movie horror vibe that Sam was known for,...

One of the aspects of Spider-Man: Far From Home that I enjoyed most was when Mysterio was messing around with Spider-Man and thrusting him in these insanely trippy, nightmarish-like situations. The visuals of this “Illusion Battle” were awesome and I loved that they were included in the film, because that’s Mysterio!
Anyway, we’ve got a great little behind-the-scenes video to share with you that was created by Framestore with the help of Production VFX Supervisor Janek Sirrs. This video offers a breakdown of the VFX work that was created for these scenes and it’s super cool. Here’s a note that came with the video:
For Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Far From Home, we took on the dazzling ‘Illusion Battle,’ a mesmirising sequence which sees Mysterio play on Peter’s very worst fears by conjuring psychedelic environments, freakish characters and a dramatic narrative. Working with Production VFX Supervisor Janek Sirrs,...

When it came to creating The Elementals, the massive, multiverse monsters for “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” manifestations of Earth, Water, Fire, and Air, Marvel looked no further than some familiar Spidey foes: Sand-Man, Hydro-Man, Molten-Man, and Cyclone.
“I’m not sure which came first in the development process, the idea of using the comic book villains…or elemental creatures that would be subsequently assigned to those villains,” said Janek Sirrs, the production visual effects supervisor. “Either way we trod a fine line with the connection between the two, and only explicitly called out Hydro-Man’s comic book character’s name, leaving the rest more ambiguous.”
Cinematic translation to the big screen, though, was definitely a major design issue. “For example, Molten-Man was at one point depicted as a gold man sporting a buzz cut and a pair of tighty-whities (although we did retain a hint of...

While figuring out the big battles with the latest McU additions, Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) and The Elementals, the “Spider-Man: Far From Home” VFX team was stymied by, of all things, “The Peter Tingle.” You know, Aunt May’s (Marisa Tomei) cute description of Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) innate ability to anticipate imminent danger, commonly known as “Spider-Sense.”
In “Avengers: Infinity War,” for example, we witnessed the hair standing on his arm with the arrival of Thanos. But director Jon Watts and Marvel wanted to explore the super power more creatively in “Far From Home,” especially after the innovative, Oscar-winning, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” offered such boldly graphic animated versions of it.
“‘Into The Spider-Verse’ used that ability to great success and there was definitely a desire to replicate that in a live-action fashion,” said Janek Sirrs, the production visual effects supervisor, “but without retreading familiar...

The second big-screen installment of Suzanne Collins' Ya trilogy sees Jennifer Lawrence return as the heroic Katniss Everdeen with new faces Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jena Malone, Jeffrey Wright and Sam Claflin joining the franchise.
As faithful as Argos or Old Yeller, Snowy or Hachiko, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire runs no risk of disappointing its absolutely ravenous target audience. Serving up everything from Suzanne Collins' eventful second installment in her trilogy about teenage warrior and rebel Katniss Everdeen that fans could possibly want to see, this is a safe, serviceable, carefully crafted action drama in which the subversive seeds planted in the first story take welcome root. As before, Jennifer Lawrence is the superb center of it all and the massive success of this Lionsgate release is as certain as the turning of the Earth.

The 2013 Saturn Awards were handed out Wednesday night, June 26, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. (For those of you without the complete collection of limited edition "Battlestar Galactica" commemorative plates, the Saturn Awards are basically the genre equivalent of the Academy Awards.) "The Avengers" was the big winner on the movie side of things, while "Breaking Bad" dominated in the TV categories.
Named the best science fiction film of the year, "The Avengers" also picked up awards for best supporting actor (Clark Gregg), best director (Joss Whedon), and best special effects (Janek Sirrs, Jeff White, Guy Williams, and Dan Sudick).
Elsewhere in the film categories, "Life of Pi" won for best fantasy film, "Skyfall" took home best action/adventure film, and "Cabin in the Woods" nabbed best horror film/thriller. Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway both added to their awards collections, with Lawrence winning best actress...

The 2013 Saturn Awards were handed out last night, and while horror was pushed to the background a bit, a lot of our favorites (and one glaring non-favorite) took home the gold.
In the favorites category you'll find The Cabin in the Woods, Killer Joe, Frankenweenie, "The Walking Dead," "Dexter," and the Universal Monsters. As for that not-so-favorite, well, just look at who won Best Supporting Actress for a TV series.
From the Press Release:
Marvel’s The Avengers received four Saturn Awards, the most of any film nominated this year, while "Breaking Bad" received three TV awards as the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films presented the 38th annual Saturn Awards, the top honors for genre entertainment. Marvel’s The Avengers was named Best Science Fiction Film and also received Saturn Awards for Best Supporting Actor (Clark Gregg), Best Direction (Joss Whedon), and Best Special Effects (Janek Sirrs, Jeff White,...

If you didn't tune in for the Academy Awards last night, here's a short breakdown of what you missed: William Shatner showed up from the future, Jennifer Lawrence tripped and fell, and Michelle Obama co-presented the award for Best Picture. It was kind of a weird night, but for the most part, the hardware was handed out to all of the expected parties. Argo won Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor and Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress. If there was a surprise, it was that Life of Pi walked away with the most awards (4) including Best Director for Ang Lee. Zero Dark Thirty got shut out of everything except for Best Sound Editing (in a rare tie with Skyfall). Quentin Tarantino was also a pleasant surprise for Best Original Screenplay. What did you think of this year's Oscars? What was the highlight of the night? How would you rate Seth McFarlane as host?...

This evening’s Oscar ceremony is now over, and with the dust settling on the biggest awards ceremony of the entire year, and the winners and losers celebrating and commiserating together, we’ve put together a full list of the winners (as well as the beaten nominees) for this year’s awards.
Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain nailed the red carpet, apparently, and Sandra Bullock did wonderful things with a diamond hair-clip, while Bradley Cooper and Chris Pine both proved that beards are very much the hot thing right now. But the big events were yet to happen inside the La venue, as the audience sat ready to receive host Seth MacFarlane, and his inevitably cutting humour.
For the most part, MacFarlane was reserved, though a few barbs did land before the end of the night. He played his part also in the excellent musical staging throughout the ceremony, whose highlights featured Shirley Bassey,...

Today the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films announced its nominees for the 2013 Saturn Awards, one of the few awards programs in which a lot of us will recognize nearly every production. The awards have been expanded over recent years, so if you are unclear about just what type of productions are honored by the Academy, an explanation is included in the press release below, although it can really be summarized as “we know it when we see it.”
A few head-scratchers, however, just beg to be called out:
Anna Karenina? Les Miserables? Leverage? Elementary? Really? That is some broad definition. No subgenre categories for television. The Academy proofreader should know by now that it’s “Syfy” and not “SyFy” (don’t worry, I fixed it, and sorry, it’s a pet peeve). Adding in historical fiction somewhere somehow without actually mentioning it. The entire category “Best Youth-Oriented...

The ceremony is over here in London, bringing together some of the finest and most talented people in the film industry under the same roof for one night. The BAFTAs are this country’s highest honour in film, and they have handed out their awards for the 66th time to those whom they deem the most deserving in the past year in film.

I've enjoyed watching the Academy Awards for as long as I can remember. Even though I don't always agree with their decisions, it's still a fun experience for me. This year Emma Stone and Seth MacFarlane woke up at the buttcrack of dawn to give us the nominations for the 85th Academy Awards, I however didn't wake up to watch because I was just too damn tired.
There's a lot of great movies that were nominated this year and Lincoln leads the pack with 12 nominations which isn't surprising at all. Life of Pi ended up getting 11 noms, Les Miserables got 8, Silver Linings Playbook got 8 as well, Argo ended up with 7, Zero Dark Thirty has 5, Skyfall got 5, Django Unchained got 5 and The Avengers got 1.

Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone took the stage at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills this morning to announce this year's Academy Award nominations, and they played out almost exactly as everyone expected. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln led the way with 12 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and another Best Actor nod for Daniel Day-Lewis. Ang Lee's Life of Pi was up for 11 awards, while David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook and Tom Hooper's Les Miserables received 8 nominations apiece. There were a total of 9 Best Picture nominees this year, and if there were any surprises they would probably be Beasts of the Southern Wild and Amour. Django Unchained was also in the mix, although Quentin Tarantino was ignored for Best Director. On the bright side, Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams were all recognized for their performances in The Master, although the movie itself received no love.

As promised, host Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the 2013 Oscar nominees at the Academy Awards' annual press conference first thing this morning. Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the 85th Academy Awards nominations this morning, and absolutely no one should be surprised that a movie directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and based on the life of one of the most universally admired people on the planet garnered the most nods. Lincoln garnered 12 nominations, including Best Picture, directing, acting and supporting actors (Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones) — really they owe it all to the beard, don’t they? Life of Pi, Silver Linings Playbook and Django Unchained followed in the nod count. We’ll get to the surprising snubs in a minute, but first, take a look at the full nominations list and marvel along with Emma that every single one of the supporting actor nominees has won an award before:
