The Matrix franchise has to be one of the greatest sci-fi movie series ever made that has pushed the genre to a new height. But it was never easy to make it. There were a lot of changes in the cast of several characters, including Neo and Trinity. But interestingly, the Wachowskis presented the script in a very different way.
Keanu Reeves as Neo in The Matrix films
Directed by the Wachowski siblings; Lilly Wachowski and Lana Wachowski, The Matrix franchise started on a weird note, at least not what Warner Brothers expected. The duo reportedly presented the script in a format that was beyond the wildest imagination of the studio. No wonder they picked it up after several rejections from so many different studios.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"Whoa." This is the famous word uttered by Keanu Reeves in "The Matrix" that has become a meme, one of the actor's most quoted lines, and perhaps the best way to sum up this movie's unexpected impact on cinema when it arrived in 1999. The movie is now immortalized as one of the most heralded and groundbreaking blockbusters of all time. But 25 years ago, this seemed like anything but a sure bet.
From a pair of underdog directors to visuals that had never been pulled off in film before, this is a movie that had just about everything working against it. Every movie is a miracle, but this movie is perhaps the miracle of all miracles. It is — not to overstate the point...

Paper Girls, based on Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s graphic novel, has been ordered to series by Amazon.
The project, from Legendary Television in association with Plan B, initially landed in development with a series commitment last year in a competitive situation, as revealed by Deadline.
Toy Story 4 co-writer Stephany Folsom wrote the adaptation and will act as co-showrunner alongside Christopher Cantwell, and Christopher C. Rogers. Vaughan and Chiang are also executive producers.
Paper Girls, from Image Comics, follows four young girls who, while out delivering papers on the morning after Halloween in 1988, become unwittingly caught in a conflict between warring factions of time-travelers, sending them on an adventure through time that will save the world. In the years following the release of 1999’s groundbreaking The Matrix, dozens of films and TV shows tried to ape the grim, apocalyptic world of the Wachowski’s films. But none could really nail the elaborate, weird, and grotesque designs that was crafted by The Matrix concept artists Geof Darrow and Steve Skroce, who along with Jim Martin, helped create the […]

Yesterday we got the amazing news that Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be coming back for The Matrix 4! Lana Wachowski is coming back to write and direct, and now we know that the original concept artists, Geof Darrow and Steve Skroce, who worked on the first three films, are also rejoining the fourth installment in the franchise! With this lineup, the film is sure to recapture the awesomeness of the first films.
Rumors have swirled around for the past few years of this project trying to get off the ground, but it is only worth doing if we have the original talent, or it would just have been a reboot, and we don’t need that. Wachowski shared the same feelings, as she was quoted saying, “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to...

I came by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang's comic book Paper Girls when a guy I went to high school with, Steve Skroce, who worked with Vaughan on the series We Stand on Guard, wrote to keep an eye for this new book. One of the first things I exclaimed when I picked up issue one of was that someone had to option it pronto and turn it into a series or movie. A story of four young paper delivery girls 'caught in a conflict between warring factions of time-travelers' is just the kind of hard edged entertainment our sisters, daughters and female friends needed! It has taken a while, amost four years since that first issue came out, but Deadline is...

A look into the making of space opera comic ‘Saga’ and Canada vs. U.S. war story ‘We Stand On Guard’
The world is ruled by women when all male mammals (all but two) die suddenly. A group of teens discover their parents are part of an evil crime organization. War-torn Iraq is seen through the eyes of lions escaped from the Baghdad Zoo. These are just some of the tales spun by Brian K. Vaughan, one of the most compelling, creative, thought-provoking writers in comic books today. Issue #4 of Vaughan’s “We Stand On Guard” hits comic book store shelves today. The mini-series imagines a war between the U.S. and Canada about a century into the future. It centers on 18-year-old Canadian Amber, who’s survived on the run for 12 years when her older brother is captured by the American army. The series will run for a total of six issues, though Vaughan told HitFix that he and artist Steve Skroce “are already talking about what we’re gonna work on next.

We Stand on Guard #1

Published by Image Comics
Brian K. Vaughan has already cemented himself as an important cornerstone to comic book history, and he continues to impress through Saga and the recently wrapped digital series The Private Eye. Whenever a new title is announced in which Vaughan lends his pen, heads should turn and pre-orders should be attended to. It becomes a bonus when the creative team as a whole features some stellar individuals. Look no further than the freshly released title We Stand on Guard.
The premise is fairly simple on the surface: a group of freedom fighters remain in Canada, defending their country from the invading forces of the United States. What starts as a joke from the mouth of a young Canadian boy, living with his family in...

Following on from the announcement that a documentary about George Miller's cancelled Justice League: Mortal was in the works, we continue to get some very interesting "what if" pre-production teases. The latest comes from storyboard artist Steve Skroce, who posted the following samples of his work to his Facebook page. In the script, Maxwell Lord (Jay Baruchel) takes control of Superman's (D.J. Cotrona) mind and forces him to engage his team-mates in combat. This battle with Wonder Woman (Megan Gale) would have happened towards the end of the film, just before Batman (Armie Hammer) snaps Lord's neck! In the comics it's actually Wonder Woman who is forced to commit the murder... but there you go. Here's what Skroce had to say about the artwork. "I'm seeing a lot of art from the cancelled George Miller Justice League film so here's a few boards that I did for the film.

DC Comics keeps reader anticipation at a fever pitch with Justice League Volume 3: Throne of Atlantis. Although it stars all the members of the Super Friends, the book gives one of the team's highly unsung heroes the limelight he deserves. Aquaman and the battle over his undersea kingdom is the center of attention in this collection of Justice League issues 13 through 17 and Aquaman 15 and 16.
A U.S. Navy missile strikes Atlantis, provoking Ocean Master to gather the forces of the undersea kingdom to attack the east coast of the United States. Aquaman leads the Justice League into battle, all the while hoping he can straighten out the deadly situation. Can he stop an impending war between the U.S. and Atlantis? What will Aquaman do to protect the city of his ancestors?

Now that the first two trailers for "The Wolverine" have been released, we all have a better idea about just what specific type of trouble Logan will be getting up to during his stay in Japan. The film's plot seems to center around Wolverine's desire to give up on life after the loss of Jean Grey, a desire that leads him straight into the clutches of Shingen Yashida, Viper and the Silver Samurai. These characters have become mainstays of Wolverine's solo exploits in the Marvel Comics, and the glimpses we got of each character makes me think the film will adhere close to their comic book counterparts. With that in mind, Splash Page has compiled a list of the comic book story lines that seem to provide inspiration for this summer's film.

We sat down recently with director James McTeigue to talk about his new film, “Ninja Assassin,” based on a screenplay by Matthew Sand and J. Michael Straczynski, and starring Korean pop star Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Rick Yune and legendary martial arts performer Sho Kosugi.
As a boy in Sydney, McTeigue was exposed to a variety of world cinema and television and was heavily influenced by ninja television shows like "Shintaro" and "Phantom Agents," and by films such as "Shinobi No Mono." He graduated from Sydney University, where he studied art and film.
McTeigue made his directorial debut helming the iconoclastic screen adaptation of the graphic novel "V for Vendetta." He came to the project through his relationship with the Wachowski brothers, for whom he served as the assistant director on all three "Matrix" films. His other previous film credits as an assistant director include "Speed Racer" and "Dark City.

In the past, comic book artists were not regarded very highly in Hollywood. When a director needed to have certain scenes "pre-visualized," it was often a storyboard artist that was tapped for the job. However, with the recent popularity of comic book movies and the sky-rocketing costs of developing feature-length action films, directors have increasingly turned to comic book or "sequential" artists to help flesh out their ideas.
James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) is one such director. For his latest film, Ninja Assassin, McTeigue hired comic book artist Steve Skroce to help him bring the script to life, he told ComingSoon.net.
What I usually do with Steve is that we start off with concept pieces — we call them key frames. We talk about the key frames and how they come together and then I'll say to him, "Look, I felt like this should be a cross between anime and gameplay,...
