5. Philadelphia (1993) The fifth place in our list is occupied by ‘Philadelphia’ (1993), a film that courageously tackled the issues of AIDS and homosexuality at a time when both were highly stigmatized. “More than a decade after AIDS was first identified as a disease, ‘Philadelphia’ marks the first time Hollywood has risked a big-budget film on the subject,” highlighting its groundbreaking nature. Tom Hanks delivers an Oscar-winning performance as Andrew Beckett, a competent lawyer who faces discrimination after his diagnosis with AIDS. Nothing screams "must-see" quite like a new Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks collaboration. They're the dream duo of modern American cinema, the closest thing we have to a Frank Capra-James Stewart tandem. They've made five films together, and all but one ("The Terminal") are legitimately great.
The only baffling element of their creative partnership is that it didn't happen sooner. Hanks was in his 40s and Spielberg in his 50s when they came together for 1998's devastating World War II epic "Saving Private Ryan." If you're wondering what took so long, Spielberg is right there with you. If the two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker had been able to swing it, he would've loved to direct Hanks in 1993's "Philadelphia."
Hanks Finally Proves His Worth As A Dramatic Actor

The minute I got the go ahead for this blog, I e-mailed Victor Bonacore hoping to score a sit down. After meeting at the La Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in early 2008, I had quickly become a fan of his short films, and I wasn’t the only one. Not only has Bonacore won praise from numerous critics for his shorts Pretty and Eat Me (which have found distribution in the UK), they have been screened at festivals around the world. Most recently, his music video for Johnnie Lee Jordan’s The Wigly premiered, garnering early raves for his unique take on the love song. Infusing his work with a rare blend of horror and romanticism, and recently founding the production company ChainsawKiss, Bonacore is determined to expand his work. And with 2009 seeing the completion of no less then three shorts, he is truly a talent to look out for.
