The Beatles
between 1962 and 1966.
He was born in Edmonton, North London.
He signed
Pink Floyd
to their first recording contract after being impressed by their stage presentation. He produced their early albums.
John Lennon
gave him the nickname "Normal Norman".
He played various instruments as a child and teenager, including drums, piano, vibraphone, trombone, and stand-up bass.
He served as a Royal Air Force glider pilot in WWII. After the war, he played trumpet in a traditional-jazz band for several years.
He took the nickname "Hurricane Smith" from a 1952 movie of the same name.
