Discrepancies in the criminal justice system are on full display in Netflix's true-crime documentary "State of Alabama vs. Brittany Smith," which examines the factors surrounding Brittany Smith's 2020 trial for the murder of Todd Smith.
Brittany garnered national attention when she was charged with fatally shooting Todd in January 2018 but claimed that she did so in self-defense. After relentlessly fighting for a Stand Your Ground hearing, which would grant her immunity if she could prove that she believed she was in imminent danger when she pulled the trigger, she lost. If convicted, Brittany would've faced up to 25 years in prison for her crime, but that wasn't the end of her story.
Here are the true details behind "State of Alabama vs. Brittany Smith."

Netflix’s The State of Alabama vs Brittany Smith, a taut true-crime documentary from The Keepers director Ryan White, follows the distressing story of an Alabama mother who was charged with murdering a man she said raped her.
Smith’s case became the focus of an attention-grabbing New Yorker investigation, in part because Smith invoked a “stand your ground” defence. In over 30 US states, including Alabama, state law makes it legal to use lethal force to defend oneself against threats or even perceived threats. In this case, Smith was cornered in her own home by her assailant – an old acquaintance called Todd Smith – who told Smith he’d kill her if she called the police.
But her stand your ground defence failed. In fact, as journalist Elizabeth Flock, who serves as executive producer on the Netflix series, found, women are much less likely than men to successfully invoke “stand your...

State of Alabama vs. Brittany Smith is a documentary directed by Ryan White.
The heartrending story of a woman whose attempt to recur to Alabama’s Stand Your Ground law, after killing a man she says brutally attacked her, proves to be very difficult.
About the Documentary
A documentary that is definitively journalistic in nature. The documentary tells us Brittany Smith’s story of how she killed a man in self-defense and the ordeal she had to go through to prove that it was in fact self-defense. It also sheds some light on the difficulties these communities have to live with.
During the 40 minutes of duration of this report, we learn about how the Stand Your Ground law is applied, and when it is not deemed applicable.
It includes interviews with Brittany Smith herself, her mother, various other such as a local journalist, and the cousin of the man killed.

Saturday Night Live fans have criticised the announcement that Dave Chappelle will host the series next week.
Chappelle has become a polarising figure in recent years, thanks to several jokes about transgender people in his recent stand-up specials that critics have described as transphobic.
Over the weekend, it was announced that Chappelle would be hosting the 12 November episode of the long-running US sketch show, with hip-hop duo Black Star appearing as musical guests.
Chappelle has hosted the show twice before, with his most recent hosting stint coming in November 2020, hours after Trump lost the presidential election to Joe Biden.
Reacting to the news on social media, some fans of the show voiced objections to Chappelle’s involvement with SNL, with many raising concerns about his comments regarding trans people.
“Ugh why is #SNL bringing back Dave Chappelle again? So he can make more transphobic jokes?”

Ian Hislop is being praised for his “bang on” comments to Gary Neville on Have I Got News For You.
The satirical panel show’s latest episode was broadcast on Friday (4 November), and was guest hosted by the retired footballer.
When the subject of the forthcoming World Cup in Qatar came up, Hislop did not hold back.
When the former Manchester United pro, who is commentating at the sporting contest, asked Hislop if “it’s coming home”, he replied: “What, your reputation?”
The decision to attend the contest in Qatar has been branded “unacceptable” due to the country’s human rights record as well as the controversy surrounding migrant workers who were injured in the run-up to the sporting event.
Many are boycotting the event due to the coutry’s stance on the LGBT community, and are calling out Fifa for its “defeaning silence” on the matter as the contest grows nearer.
