Countless actresses auditioned for Mean Girls, and Ashley Tisdale was one of them.
The High School Musical breakout stopped by Watch What Happens Live! on Monday, where she was asked by a fan if it was true she auditioned for the role of Karen Smith in the hit 2004 film.
“Gosh, it was so long ago,” Tisdale said. “I just remember screen-testing, and it was me and Blake Lively and someone else. But yeah, I screen-tested. That was like, eons ago, obviously.”
Amanda Seyfried eventually went on to portray Karen, and the film marked the Emmy-winning actress’ biggest role at the time. Shortly after, Tisdale landed The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and then High School Musical. Lively starred in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants before landing the lead role in Gossip Girl.
During her appearance on the late night show, Tisdale also recounted her audition for Mean Girls.

A writing credit is probably a bit much, but a little acknowledgement might be due to Ashley Tisdale, who said she ad-libbed a line during her audition for the original Mean Girls that wound up in the final cut of the movie.
On Watch What Happens Live Tuesday, Tisdale was asked about going out for the role of Karen Smith, the lovable airhead eventually played by Amanda Seyfried. The actress said she screen-tested for the film alongside Blake Lively and didn’t remember much about the audition except one part.

2004's "Mean Girls" has become a seminal classic of teen girl cinema, with Rachel McAdams' Regina George, Lacey Chabert's Gretchen Weiners, Amanda Seyfried's Karen Smith, and Lindsay Lohan's Cady Heron just as culturally important (and quotable) as say, Matthew Broderick in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." A time capsule of early aughts fashion and sensibilities, "Mean Girls" is a cultural touchstone and arguably the last time a teen movie crossed over into mainstream popularity without being a part of a massive franchise like "Twilight" or "The Hunger Games" (or a slasher film). Simply put, "Mean Girls" is now woven into the fabric of American pop culture.
The film helped solidify Lohan's place as one of Hollywood's "it girls," and her off-set antics became just as talked about as whatever film she had out in theaters. So much so, that even the insulting nickname "fire crotch" for her made...

Avantika is opening up about racially-charged comments about her following the release of the Mean Girls trailer back in November.
The almost 19-year-old actress stars in the new movie musical as the ditzy Karen, who was played by Amanda Seyfried in the original movie 20 years ago.
After the trailer debuted, Avantika was met with racist comments about her casting, and now, she’s reacting to the negative things people said.

“If anybody says anything about my acting, I’m like ‘please tell me more.’ If you don’t feel like you’re connecting to the character on screen, I should know,” she told Teen Vogue. “But if you’re talking about how you can smell the character from the screen, you’re simply an ignorant person and a bigot, and there’s nothing I can do about that. Tina Fey agreed to return to 'Mean Girls' if she didn't have to sing. The 53-year-old actress and her co-star Tim Meadows reprised their roles as Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall from the original movie in the new big screen musical adaptation, but she admitted their involvement was conditional on them being able to just stick to dialogue.Tina told People magazine: "I am reprising my role as Ms. Norbury because we thought, well, teachers work for a long time. So it might make sense if Tim and I did it."So I called Tim and I was like, 'Will you do it? I'll do it if you do it.' And we said yes, as long as we don't have to sing."Tina relished working with the 62-year-old actor - who previously reprised his role in 'Mean Girls 2' - again. She added: "It was fun. It's been nice to see Tim.

The very first shot of the 2024 musical reimagining of "Mean Girls" is a vertical frame. Two characters, Janis (played by Auli'i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), film themselves singing a song that sets the stage for the story to follow. They're troubadours for the TikTok set - and this is a "Mean Girls" for a new generation.
The Cady Heron, Regina George, and Aaron Samuels of the original film, released in 2004, had never seen an iPhone - those wouldn't debut for another three years. "Instagram," "Twitter," and "Snapchat" would have sounded like gibberish. Karen was just a name, and Donald Trump was just a business mogul.
Twenty years later . . . well, things are different. We've seen not just a technological revolution, but a cultural one. More Americans have become more aware of how rampant racism and discrimination - from microaggressions to hate crimes - are in this country. And while we...

Mean Girls 2024, directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., and starring a vibrant ensemble including Renée Rapp, Auliʻi Cravalho, Angourie Rice, Tina Fey (who also wrote the screenplay), Jaquel Spivey, and many others brings the classic 2004 teen comedy into the modern era with updated cultural references and a more diverse cast. However, the film struggles to justify its existence beyond surface-level changes and ultimately falters in delivering a coherent, impactful story that offers little new or compelling.
Mean Girls is adapted from Rosalind Wiseman’s 2002 book, Queen Bees and Wannabes and became a Broadway musical in 2018 featuring music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. The new movie closely follows the plot of the original film and centers around Cady Heron (Rice), a naive teenager who spent her childhood in Africa with her parents. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she moves to the United States...

Lacey Chabert, who starred as Gretchen Wieners in 2004’s Mean Girls, is opening up about her reunion with former co-stars Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried for Walmart’s Black Friday ads.
The actress told Yahoo Entertainment, in an interview published online Wednesday, that filming the commercials “was even more fun than it looked.”
“It was a really special day to be with Lindsay and Amanda again and to reminisce about the experience we had together, which is just so unique, and to catch up with each other,” Chabert added. “We’re all moms now! It was really a full-circle moment.”
Walmart recruited much of the original cast, including Lohan, Seyfried, Chabert, Daniel Franzese and Rajiv Surendra, to star in a Black Friday marketing campaign. Throughout the month of November, the retail giant is releasing new commercials featuring the cast every Wednesday leading up to Black Friday and Cyber Monday on Nov.

Lacey Chabert’s Gretchen Wieners is back for another Mean Girls Walmart Black Friday ad.
The new ad spot (below) sees Gretchen’s new clique that she formed after her days at North Shore High School: the Wieners household.
“I am so getting you white gold hoop earrings for Hanukkah,” she says to her teen daughter. “What gold? It’s giving 2004,” her daughter replies before Chabert quickly cuts in, “Irregardless, I don’t think your grandfather, the inventor of Toaster Strudel, would be too pleased to hear you using that tone with me.”
Later, Chabert also tried to make “bop” happen, while listening to ‘Milkshake’: “Throwback Wednesday! I love this song. What a bop.” But her daughter was not having it, telling her mom, “Please don’t say bop.”
The commercial references several memorable lines from the original 2004 film, including Amanda Seyfried’s Karen Smith making an appearance to ask Chabert,...

Rachel McAdams is apparently not interested in making “fetch” happen, and she is one of the core Mean Girls cast members to not return for a recent Black Friday ad for Walmart. Now who doesn’t even go here?
Nearly 20 years after Mean Girls was released, Lindsay Lohan (Cady Heron), Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Wieners) and Amanda Seyfried (Karen Smith) reunited in the name of good deals and, yes, pink. But Rachel McAdams, who played leader of The Plastics Regina George, was noticeably absent, taking away so much from the reunion and instead bringing most of the attention back to her. Wait, was this a meta Regina George move…?
Still, the ad (which you can watch here) does have plenty of nods and easter eggs to Mean Girls, in addition to showing how Cady, Gretchen and Karen all turned out: Cady has become a guidance counselor, Karen has become a professional...

A Walmart ad touting its Black Friday deals gathered three of the four stars of Mean Girls, with the movies’ Amanda Seyfried, Lindsay Lohan and Lacey Chabert diving into their iconic characters.
The spot, which dropped today, featured the trio as adult versions of the high schoolers they played in the 2004 movie directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey.
In the spot, Chabert’s Gretchen is still trying to make “Fetch” happen except this time as a mom of a high schooler (spoiler: they’re still not buying it), while Seyfried’s Karen Smith is a news reporter still trying to nail down the facts. Lohan’s Cady, who narrates the ad like she did in the movie, is now a high school guidance counselor.
No sign of Rachel McAdams, who played the mean girls’ leader Regina in the movie, in the ad, which runs about 2 minutes.

While the “Mean Girls” musical movie is slated for 2024, the real “Mean Girls” sequel has just dropped in time for the 2023 holidays…thanks to a Walmart ad.
“At North Shore, some things never change,” lead actress Lindsay Lohan says in a voiceover as she reprises her iconic role of Cady Heron, almost 20 years since the 2004 film was released.
In this follow-up, the Burn Book is actually all the Walmart Black Friday deals that are blowing up North Shore High, where Gretchen Weiners’ (Lacey Chabert) teenage daughter is enrolled and where Cady (Lohan) is the guidance counselor. Turns out, the former Plastics all still wear pink on Wednesdays, but this time, it’s for carpool.
Gretchen is a typical stage mom, encouraging her teens to do perfect TikTok dances. Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried) is putting her reporting skills on display still, and also continues to hang with Cady and Gretchen.

For every actor who lands a role in a TV show or movie, there's usually an actor (or several) who didn't get the part. Even Hollywood's biggest stars have to go through an audition process at some point, and that means dealing with rejection - for example, Blake Lively lost out to Amanda Seyfried on playing Karen Smith in "Mean Girls," while "Better Caul Saul" actor Bob Odenkirk was incredibly close to playing Steve Carrell's iconic Michael Scott in "The Office." Apparently, Adam Brody really wanted to play Star-Lord in "Guardians of the Galaxy," and Britney Spears came close to landing the role of Allie in "The Notebook."
For every actor who almost missed out on their iconic breakout roles, there are those who were almost cast instead. Some stars came down to the final few only to be beat out by another actor. Others were cast only to be fired and recast.

Mean Girls was released in theatres in 2004. The movie was an instant classic. More than 19 years after its premiere, fans still quote the film. In fact, October 3 is considered “Mean Girls Day” among the movie’s most ardent fans. While the original has almost infinite rewatch potential, we can’t help but wonder if a sequel will ever be made. Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried answered that question in 2022, and the news isn’t great. Fans won’t be catching up with a grown-up Cady Heron and Regina George. Still, a Mean Girls sequel is in the works.
Is there going to be a sequel to ‘Mean Girls’?
Not long ago, Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried chatted about Mean Girls and the movie’s legacy with Interview Magazine. The former costars said that while they’d be happy to entertain the notion of a movie sequel, they had yet to be approached about anything.

Amanda Seyfried won't be promoting her upcoming indie movie 'Seven Veils' amid the Hollywood strikes. The 37-year-old actress stars as Jeanine, a theatre director who is dealing with repressed trauma as she prepares to mount a production of the opera 'Salome' in Atom Egoyan's upcoming drama. And despite being given the go-ahead to promote the flick at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival this week, Amanda doesn't feel "it's right" to do so until the actors and writers striking for better pay and conditions receive a "fair agreement".Announcing the decision on Instagram over the weekend, she wrote: “I am So Proud of this movie and it hurts my heart not to stand next to the beautiful people who helped create this special film at our @tiff_net premiere next week.”She continued: "@sagaftra has given us a wavier to promote this fully, magically independent Canadian movie but...

Without a doubt, "Barbie" has become the cultural event of the summer, and with good reason. It's not only a smart sendup of gender politics, it's also one of the most enjoyable two hours you're likely to spend in a theater all year. That sense of joy and infectious spirit was also felt behind the scenes where most of the main cast bonded with star Margot Robbie throughout the production.
For starters, actor Simu Liu told People magazine that Robbie hosted a sleepover with all of the main Barbies featured in the film where "the Kens were allowed to either visit briefly or to phone in and say hi." There were also group chats and themed movie nights curated by Robbie and her husband and co-producer Tom Ackerly. That kind of connection is definitely a rarity in Hollywood, and the chemistry between the actors and director Greta Gerwig absolutely translated to the big screen.

Although Karen Smith could have been a run-of-the-mill ditz in Mean Girls, Amanda Seyfried flourished in the role while borrowing the persona of one of the most iconic actors of all time. As a result, we were introduced to a versatile screen talent who would go on to gather acclaim in both TV and movies.
And it all started with lifting a famous voice straight from the 1950s.
Amanda Seyfried originally auditioned for a different ‘Mean Girls’ role
Seyfried’s future was very much up in the air as she headed to her first class at Fordham University in New York City in 2003. But according to an interview with Self, Seyfried never made it.
Already late from doing a screen test for Mean Girls, Amanda Seyfried bailed on the class (and Fordham) altogether. After ditching class, she headed to Los Angeles to audition for the movie after the screen test proved successful.

One sure sign of a film's legacy: Does it inspire its own holiday? If you happened to be anywhere near the Internet on Oct. 3, you probably noticed an outpouring of nostalgia for 2004's Mean Girls. The reason? A throwaway line uttered by Lindsay Lohan's Cady: "It's October 3rd." That may seem a pretty slim thread to hang an entire day on, but it's indicative of the fervent fan base for this new-classic teen comedy. Written by Tina Fey and directed by Mark Waters (Vampire Academy), Mean Girls stars Lohan as a high school student at a new school who infiltrates the Plastics,...

In the early 1980s, slashers were coming and going as fast as they were made. When I saw this was going to be a slasher that is based in a hospital setting, my initial reaction was, “Is this going to be a rip off of Halloween II?” Thankfully this movie, despite some faults, was much better than I gave it credit for.
