The director behind Ray Stevenson’s final film has written a heartfelt farewell letter to the star, who died unexpectedly this week. Scroll down to read in full.
Péter Soós was flying home from the Cannes Film Festival when he was informed of Stevenson’s death aged 58.
The director had worked with the Rrr, Thor, Vikings and Rome actor on historical drama 1242 Gateway to the West. Stevenson replaced Kevin Spacey in the role and his scenes wrapped in Hungary back in February. Above is an image of Stevenson on set with Soós.
“On Monday night, on the way home by plane from Cannes, I received the news that you had left us. Only now can I find the words to speak,” wrote Soós. “I have realised the overwhelming weight of the responsibility that has fallen upon me with our work together on what is surely your last feature film.

Ray Stevenson's a busy man. Coming off of his head-turning role in cinephile sensation flick "Rrr," the man has also booked himself a role as a "Star Wars" bad guy in the upcoming "Ahsoka" Disney+ series. Now, per The Hollywood Reporter, he has replaced the extremely problematic Kevin Spacey in the historical action flick "1242: Gateway to the West" playing the lead role in the film about a Hungarian Priest who stands up against the Mongol army.
Also starring in the movie are Eric Roberts ("The Dark Knight"), Michael Ironside ("Starship Troopers"), Bold Choimbol ("Bogd Khaan"), David Schofield ("Gladiator"), and Christopher Lambert ("Highlander"). The film is currently in production under the direction of Peter Soos and is expected to be shopped around to distributors around the end of the year.

Thor and Rrr star Ray Stevenson has nabbed the lead role in 1242: Gateway to the West after Kevin Spacey exited the historical Genghis Khan drama last year amid sexual assault charges in the U.K.
Carlos Alperin of Galloping Entertainment, who will continue selling the global rights to the film at the European Film Market in Berlin, confirmed Stevenson’s casting to The Hollywood Reporter. Directed by Péter Soós, the 1242 cast also includes Eric Roberts, Christopher Lambert, Neil Stuke and Genevieve Florence.
“The film is looking simply Epic and will be very well positioned due to Ray Stevenson’s amazing role in Rrr, as well as the political background of the war between Russia and Ukraine,” Alperin told THR in a statement.
Historically, the Mongols invaded both Ukraine and Russia, as well as Poland, before they marched into Hungary in 1242. Alperin added that 1242 has been shooting in Hungary for...

Kevin Spacey will no longer be starring in 1242 – Gateway to the West, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The news of his departure from the film comes on the same day as a date was set for his U.K. sexual assault trial. On Thursday, the two-time Oscar winner pleaded not guilty to five charges against him, which includes four counts of sexual assault against three men dating back to 2005. Justice Mark Wall, who was overseeing the hearing at London’s historic Central Criminal Court, set the trial date for June 6, 2023.
The actor had been set to star in 1242, a historical Genghis Khan drama that was one of two Spacey-starring features shopped at the 2022 Cannes film market in May. Directed by Péter Soós, the cast also includes Eric Roberts, Christopher Lambert, Neil Stuke and Genevieve Florence.

Kevin Spacey is no longer involved with a film about the life of Genghis Khan after the actor on Thursday pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of sexual assault in the U.K.
Spacey, an Oscar winner for “The Usual Suspects” and “American Beauty,” was meant to star in “1242: Gateway to the West,” a historical drama that was being shopped at the Cannes market this summer with him attached. However, the film’s producer Bill Chamberlain told Variety on Thursday that in the wake of Spacey facing the new assault charges, the film’s lead has been replaced and that negotiations with the new actor are underway and will be revealed soon.

Kevin Spacey will no longer be leading the Genghis Khan movie shopped in Cannes following his sexual assault case in the U.K., Variety can reveal.
The actor was set to star in “1242: Gateway to the West,” a historical drama that was shopped at the Cannes film market, about a holy man of a Hungarian castle that tries to stop one of Genghis Khan’s armies from invading Europe. Spacey was set to play the holy man.
But the movie’s producer, Bill Chamberlain, tells Variety that the pic has now replaced Spacey as its lead after the former “House of Cards” actor was charged in the U.K. with four counts of sexual assault and one count of “causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.” Negotiations are currently underway with a new lead, who will be revealed in due course.
