For “Strange World” director, Don Hall, creating the film’s incredible realms was definitely a challenge but one he saw as a beautiful challenge. “We did a lot of research into different biomes and living systems. Ultimately, what I really wanted is just to kind of create a blank space,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
He brought the blank canvas to the animators over at Disney and they let their imaginations go wild. “I was just sort of the cheerleader, you know, ushering them to go weirder, go stranger and just embrace the limits of their creativity, which was boundless. It led to a really unique, specific and beautiful world.”

Leaving Neverland creator Dan Reed and Four Hours at the Capitol director Jamie Roberts have opened up about obtaining footage from the Taliban for upcoming HBO/BBC feature doc Escape from Kabul Airport.
Unveiled at last month’s Edinburgh TV Festival, the landmark doc, which launches later today on HBO and BBC Two, tells the inside story of a monumental 18 days last August when the U.S. withdrew troops from Afghanistan and evacuated thousands of citizens from Afghanistan’s capital Kabul.
Reed and Roberts were finishing Four Hours at the Capitol about the January 6 riots when they saw images from the airport evacuation and immediately knew this was to be the subject of their next film, according to the decorated pair, who spoke with Deadline in early September.
Roberts said it took “several approaches” to get the Taliban on side and access never-before-seen footage shot by Afghanistan’s now-ruling power as the U.

"Keep the runway open at all costs." HBO has revealed an official trailer for a documentary titled Escape From Kabul, made by investigative doc filmmaker Jamie Roberts. It's one of the first films about what happened in Kabul when American forces pulled out of the country as the Taliban took over. With never-before-seen archival footage of the historic confrontation at Kabul airport in August, from the US withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan through the subsequent evacuation of Afghan citizens. After 20 years of war between the Taliban, and NATO forces, a small force of U.S. Marines were deployed to Kabul in August 2021 intending to evacuate U.S. citizens and “at risk” Afghans who had cooperated with the Americans and Allied Forces during the conflict. But plans quickly changed. This looks utterly intense & harrowing, a remarkable look at how the world is destabilizing. And they even have interviews with a few Taliban leaders in this doc?...

Filmmaker Jamie Roberts has spent a year investigating the most hardcore far right activists in Britain for a new Channel 4 documentary that reveals a dark underbelly on the fringes of British politics.
Roberts and his crew have followed the South East Alliance, a splinter group from the English Defence League, and the bold and difficult to watch documentary reveals a side of Britain that many would rather ignore.
We spoke to Jamie to find out his true feelings about the people he met and how he thinks the recent events in Paris will impact these groups.
Would you say that you enjoyed making this documentary?
I feel privileged to have made it. It's a subject that I'm really interested in and have been fascinated in for quite a long time. To spend a lot of time on it and engage with it and people who are actually involved -...

Because the Casting Society of America shifted the date of its Artios Awards, this year’s nominees include films released theatrically from July 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2014, paving the way for last year’s Best Picture winner to nuzzle its way into contention along with 2014 hopefuls like "Birdman," "Boyhood," and "Selma." With categories ranging from Big Budget Drama to Low Budget Comedy, nearly every film that one expects to make the cut made the cut. And then some. The Csa’s nominees put "Guardians of the Galaxy" side by side with "Wolf of Wall Street," "Whiplash" with "Inside Llewyn Davis," and Disney’s "Planes" with "Frozen." If you were dreaming of a re-evaluation of "We’re the Millers," your time is now. 2015’s bicoastal Artios Awards will be hosted by Patton Oswalt (Los Angeles) and Michael Urie (New York City). The evening will also honor two-time Academy Award®-nominee Richard Linklater ("Boyhood...

The Casting Society of America has super-sized its Artios Awards feature film nominations this year, honoring 42 different films and putting some of 2014’s top contenders in categories where they’ll compete against 2013’s awards movies.
For its 30th annual ceremony, the awards for casting directors have moved from their usual fall slot to a late-January date that placed them in the middle of awards season. To accommodate the new date, this year’s eligibility period spanned 18 months instead of a single year, encompassing films released in the second half of 2013 and all of 2014.

At the tail end of last year, we reported on a story from the UK, where a family ran in terror from their home, after dozens of spiders burst from a bunch of bananas. Though the photo above is from that family's horrifying experience, this next story reads more or less the same... except with more spiders. A whole lot more spiders.
The Independent reports that family man Jamie Roberts noticed white patches on a bunch of bananas he had in the house earlier this week, initially mistaking them to merely be mold. What he soon realized, however, is that the patches of "mold" were actually spider nests, and it wasn't long before hundreds of baby arachnids crawled their way through the bananas, and literally invaded the Roberts family's home. “It was like something out of a horror film because suddenly the window sill was moving with hundreds of these spiders,...

Wales’ great start helped them hold off a courageous Italian fightback in the opening game of the Six Nations in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium today.
First-half tries from backs Alex Cuthbert and Scott Williams, combined with some very neat kicking from full-back Leigh Halfpenny had the reigning champions 17-3 ahead at the break, as they commenced their quest for a three-in-a-row in the Northern Hemisphere’s premier annual rugby competition.
However, Italy fought back in the second half with an early try from debutant and Rbs Six Nations Man of the Match Michele Campagnaro.
Walses looked comfortable at 60 minutes, and Gatland made a raft of changes, presumably resting players before next week’s crucial clash with Ireland in Dublin.
However, Campagnaro pulled of a fantastic interception from a Halfpenny pass to nab a breakaway try for Italy that saw the scoreline at 20-...

The 29thAnnual Artios Awards was held Nov. 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. A joint ceremony was also held in New York. The event was hosted by Aisha Tyler, who stepped up at the last minute when announced host Nicole Sullivan was unable to attend. Presenters included Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael B. Jordan, Jonathan Groff, Liam James, Ana Ortiz, and Constance Zimmer. Marg Helgenberger and Kerry Washington presented the Career Achievement and Hoyt Bowers Awards. Casting Society of America President Richard Hicks highlighted some of the Csa’s accomplishments in the last year, most notably the success of the documentary, “Casting By.” The documentary filmmakers were given a special award during the evening’s ceremony. For the first time a casting associate was also honored. In Los Angeles, Charley Medigovich was honored with the Associate Spotlight Award. Throughout the evening, there were several mentions of the notoriously camera-shy nature of casting directors.

Audience Award winners revealed as documentary festival reports record numbers.
International and UK delegate attendance at the 20th Sheffield Doc/Fest rose by 18%, breaking all previous records.
A total of 3,129 delegates from more than 60 countries attended the five-day festival – up from 2,657 in 2012.
The festival, which ran from June 12-16, has also revealed the Audience Award winners for best feature and short-form documentary – and the count revealed a tie in both categories.
The Audience Award for best feature doc was shared between Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Act of Killing and Particle Fever, directed by Mark Levinson and edited by Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now).
Oppenheimer’s film, which features former Indonesian death squad leaders re-enacting mass killings, was originally pitched at Doc/Fest’s MeetMarket in 2008 and also won the festival’s Special Jury Award.
The Audience Award for best short doc was shared between Slomo, directed by Josh Izenberg, and Solipsist Part 1, directed by Andrew Huang.

Continuing our new regular feature, our rugby columnist Jeff Ball makes his predictions for this weekend’s round of matches which include Exeter Chiefs away to Stade Francais, Harlequins against Toulon and Saracens at home to Clermont Auvergne. Let us know your predictions either in the comments below or on Twitter @Ballintouch
The Premiership takes a week off this week to let the knock out stages of both European Cup competitions take place. The English sides are poorly represented with Saracens being the only one in the last eight in the Heineken Cup, but Exeter Chiefs, Harlequins and Wasps all feature in the Amlin Challenge Cup. There are some fascinating match ups in both competitions in what promises to be an interesting rugby filled weekend.

Wales completed a historic third Grand Slam in seven years by beating France in Cardiff to win this year’s Six Nations. Let us know your thoughts on the game either in the comments below or on Twitter @BallinTouch
Super Saturday continued with an atmospheric Millennium Stadium brimming with expectation of another Welsh Grand Slam and hope that France didn’t beat them like they did at their last meeting at the World Cup.
The French had requested the roof be kept open, meaning the pitch was slick and inviting to handling errors. When Beauxis pinged a drop goal attempt low and wide in the opening seconds, the way the ball skimmed across the grass made it clear how wet the ground was.
Nonetheless, Wales started the game as they had for the whole tournament, trying to play. Jonathan Davies made some inroads to test the French defence, but a...

Wales continued their quest for the Grand Slam whilst Italy were desperate to avoid another wooden spoon in Cardiff on Saturday.Let us know what you thought of the game either in the comments below or on Twitter @Ballintouch
Wales had retained as much of the line up from their last match as possible with Justin Tipuric making his first start in the place of the injured Sam Warburton. Italy made a raft of changes after their disappointing loss last time out to Ireland, with Kris Burton taking back the ten shirt from the less than impressive Botes.
Italy, clearly incensed by a less than satisfying outing last time were clearly keen to deny Wales any periods of quick ball, setting to at the coalface as is their way. Let us know what you thought of the game either in the comments below or on Twitter @Ballintouch and remember to use our handy beginners A-z guide to rugby, here.
With Wales in the unique position of favourites for this match at Twickenham, all the talk was about the callowness of the starting England side and the size of the Welsh backline.
It was the gigantic George North who almost drew first blood, two scything runs cutting the England defence to pieces and taking the Welsh into the English 22. Unlike the Irish in the earlier game of the day, Wales were in no mood to start slowly.

All the talk was predictably about the World Cup quarter-final between these two sides that was won by the Welsh and led to their failed semi-final effort against France. Not horsing around
With the British season reaching its mid-point and entering the winter shuddering, in the Southern Hemisphere their season has ended and they are enjoying the summer. After a suitable period of r&r, teams have begun their build up to the new season, with pre-season training involving lengthy and torturous fitness sessions up hills and sand banks and across broken glass and rivers of fire. Ok, maybe not the last bits, but anyone who has taken part in a ‘proper’ pre-season will recognise the sensations.
With pre-seasons starting earlier and earlier, the onus is on the coaching staff to come up with new and original ways to keep the players engaged rather than bored.
Not horsing around
With the British season reaching its mid-point and entering the winter shuddering, in the Southern Hemisphere their season has ended and they are enjoying the summer. It’s the game no one wants to play in. Ultimately it doesn’t mean much; it is just a badge, to finish on a high despite the looming shadow of Sunday’s Final reminding those involved of what could have been. But on Friday one of these sides will be deemed “third best team in the world”.
On paper it doesn’t sound bad, being third best considering there are plenty more teams below you in the pecking order. But the wounds are still too raw either both teams to appreciate that fact, the healing effect of time yet to be given a chance to soothe.
Both sides could feasibly have been playing two days later and both will feel aggrieved not to be there. The Welsh arguably have a greater justification to be annoyed, given the performance they put in against the French considering they went an hour...

The anticipation had been simmering all week, coming to the boil on Saturday and regardless of form, the look in the eyes of both teams said it all. Passion was palatable during the Anthems, the coverage showing an absolutely packed Millenium Stadium back in Cardiff of Welshmen willing their boys on.
The kick-off forced France to put the ball out immediately, prompting the Welsh to maul the resulting lineout with alarming speed to within ten metres of the French line before errors dampened this effort. France responded with vigour, putting in several similarly determined drives into the oppositions half before a lack of precision (front rows trying to pass) ceased any opportunity.
After five minutes James Hook was given the opportunity to score the first points of the day from inside the French 22. Despite been next to the touchline, he curled it through the posts beautifully.

With Wales playing their first Rwc Semi-Final since 1987 against the troubled and precocious French, the winner will take their seat at the top table of world rugby against one of Australia and New Zealand on Sunday 23rd October in the World Cup Final.
Momentum. A key word bandied around rugby circles, but what does it mean? At its most basic level, you need momentum to go forward. In a rugby context that could be a tackle, a scrum, a maul. But it’s not just a physical act; it can also be a state of mind. And it is something Wales have in bucket loads at this very moment, something none of their contenders for rugby’s crown can claim to have.

Rising at an hour so unfamiliar, with the sun yet to rise and a slight crispness to the air, the first 6am start of the weekend felt a little bit like Christmas. Walking into the living room to find the floor bare of presents was a slight disappointment, but this was quickly made up by what these two teams gave us in the first quarter-final of the weekend.
Both teams started with an unbelievable ferociousness, turnover ball in their own half leading to Wales’ Jamie Roberts almost shattering Donnacha O’Callaghan when he tried to make a tackle on the Welshman. Just inches short it was no surprise that it was record try scorer Shane Williams who managed to squirm over between his opposite number and the touchline for the opening score, Rhys Priestland adding the extras.
The tone had been set and not being one to flinch away, Ireland...
