If there’s a moment that sums up the genius of Robbie Robertson, it’s the part in The Last Waltz when they play “It Makes No Difference.” All five brothers in the Band perform like they’re reading each other’s minds. Every detail is perfect: Robertson’s guitar, Rick Danko’s voice, Garth Hudson’s sax. They’re singing about loneliness, yet with the sound that only trusted comrades can make together. But you can hear that these guys are already mourning the death of their brotherhood. It’s their famous farewell concert,...

The most expensive private suite at Crypto.com Arena might have never gotten built if it weren’t for the pandemic. The Hideaway Luxury Suite — an exclusive venue from Stadium Status, a private members club for sports and live entertainment that affords high-profile artists and musicians access to Hideaway and other premium suites around Los Angeles — is a moody, Gucci-wallpaper adorned custom suite that cost more than $2 million for the buildout.
“It really was a unique opportunity that was presented to us from Crypto.com Arena. Historically, they would never allow people to customize or do anything like we did to our suite … but with the pandemic, they were sort of in distress, like all other entertainment properties, with the lack of events,” says hospitality and entertainment entrepreneur Matt Ampolsky, who founded Stadium Status. “They’d been trying to sell us a suite for a while, so we said,...

The Invitation director Karyn Kusama is making a scary kid movie for adults who want to have children but might be afraid they will grow up to be like Rosemary’s Baby or the kid in The Omen. They will. They always do.
Kusama then, who also directed Girlfight, Aeon Flux and Jennifer’s Body, will direct the horror film Breed for 20th Century Fox.
Breed is based on a novel by Chase Novak, under pen name Scott Spencer. The film follows a wealthy Manhattan couple who go to an experimental eastern European fertility clinic to help them get pregnant. Ten years later, the side effects kick in.

Karyn Kusama had a rough go of this Hollywood business nearly from the beginning. After winning acclaim for her first feature, the independently-financed drama Girlfight starring Michelle Rodriguez, she moved on to studio filmmaking with the poorly-received 2005 live-action adaptation of Aeon Flux, which -- as she previously told Girls on Film co-hosts Miri Jedeikin and Roth Cornet -- was "very much a committee's film." After that came the 2009 Megan Fox vehicle Jennifer's Body, which didn't fare much better either critically or commercially (though it has become something of a minor "cult" film). Nonetheless, working on Jennifer's Body seems to have sparked in Kusama a love of telling stories through the lens of horror, and after several years spent away from the feature world (though she did helm episodes of series like Halt and Catch Fire and The Man in the High Castle in the interim), she returned to her indie roots to direct The Invitation,...

This reboot of the 1981 movie of the same name (starring Brooke Shields) was also based on the same book by Scott Spencer that the first film was based on. The movie tells the story of Jade (Gabriella Wilde), a sheltered and well-off girl, and David (Alex Pettyfer), a charismatic and less well-off boy whose instant desire sparks a love affair made only more reckless by parents trying to keep them apart. To bring her vision for Endless Love from script to screen, director Shana Feste assembled a behind-the-scenes team led by cinematographer Andrew Dunn, production designer Clay Griffith and … Continue reading →

Before dragging myself to the remake of Endless Love, I dipped a toe back into Scott Spencer’s novel, which I’d read (and kinda lived) in high school. What a silly idea. Apart from the title, the names of the characters, and a fire, there’s no connection between Spencer’s tortured portrait of a kid who can’t let go and this anemic, sub-soap washout of a teen pic. It’s actually worse than the 1981 Franco Zeffirelli–Brooke Shields version — which is worse than being waterboarded but at least bears some resemblance to the book and its brilliantly addled ‘70s vibe. Spencer nailed the tension between the overly permissive counterculture and the reemergence of an angry patriarch. His hero might be out of control, but he’s justifiably confused. In this one, Jade Butterfield is played by Gabriella Wilde, a blonde with symmetrical features, wide-apart eyes, and endless stems.

It states in the credits that Endless Love is based on a novel by Scott Spencer. Some may even remember Brooke Shields in a film in the 80’s also by the same name featuring the iconic hit song by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross. Though I doubt that the majority of the people who will see this new version of the film will know that this story of young love is taken from those sources. Even those who are familiar with them will have a hard time acknowledging that this is the same story. Outside of the names of the characters and the title, Shana Feste’s 2014 film ignores many of the darker themes from the source material in-lieu of a more accessible romance for today’s younger audience.

Both times Scott Spencer's novel "Endless Love" has been adapted to the bigscreen, there have been fundamental changes made to the source material to such a degree that it's apparent the filmmakers are uneasy with the book. Understandable. Spencer's novel is not a sweet and simple love story by any means. It is a look back at the temporary madness that comes from that first wild love that people often encounter, and what happens when it's not temporary and it's not as harmless as people make it out to be. Spencer's novel is dark, and it both opens with and builds...

A blah 1981 film becomes a bland one 33 years later in Endless Love. Junking almost all the darker and more disruptive elements from Scott Spencer's 1979 best-seller, such as pyromania, incarceration, divorce, political activism, a major character's death and, last but not least, an unhappy ending, the present filmmakers serve up a more overtly teen-friendly melodrama that one could argue is the polar opposite of last year's Spring Breakers as a portrait of contemporary adolescence; in fact, the film almost becomes more about the most disturbed adult character than about the young lovers themselves. Hitting theaters just in time for Valentine's Day, director Shana Feste's ( Country Strong ) Endless Love brings to the screen a contemporary update of author Scott Spencer's 1979 novel of the same name, previously adapted for the screen by Franco Zeffirelli in 1981. There is something about the trailer for “Endless Love” that has a weird effect on me. I go to the movies at least once a week and I must have seen the trailer for this movie eight times since the summer. Each time, I am more mystified, confused, and bewildered than I was before. If you think I’m being overly-harsh, then consider this: Scott Spencer, the author of the book of which this movie is very loosely based on, has completely denounced this adaptation. Apparently, the film’s screenwriters have changed almost everything that made the novel unique,...

In 1981, Endless Love, based on the novel Scott Spencer, was released into theaters and was pretty much smashed by critics. Somebody must have enjoyed the film, though, since a trailer has just been released for its remake.
If the original had been released today, it likely would’ve been dubbed a Nicholas Sparks imitation and that makes this remake slightly intriguing, but more eye-roll inducing. Clearly there’s an audience for this or it wouldn’t have even been considered for a remake, probably the same audience that cries over The Notebook. Cue eye-rolling. The trailer makes the film look very formulaic, a total paint-by-the-numbers teenage romance. High school girls will probably get a kick out of it, but the rest will, well, see: eye-rolling.

.And love, oh, love. I.ll be a fool for you, I.m sure. You know I don.t mind. Oh, you know I don.t mind. Cause you, you mean the world to me. Oh, I know. I know I.ve found in you my endless love.. It.s hard to believe that simplistic lyrics like that - from what has turned out to be a pretty timeless love song . weren.t as insipid as the film that inspired it. I.m speaking of course about Franco Zeffirelli.s 1981 film Endless Love, adapted from the more highly regarded 1979 novel by Scott Spencer. And with the remake coming from Shana Feste (Country Strong), one has to wonder just how dripping-with-romance this film is going to be.I.m pretty sure its new release date is good indication. Deadline reports Universal has set February 14, 2014 for the film.s theatrical release (which...

Universal's remake of the 1981 romance Endless Love is coming together. Last summer, the in-development project with a script by Gossip Girl scribe Josh Safran kicked into gear as Country Strong writer-director Shana Feste was hired for a rewrite and helming duties. Then, after a bunch of aspiring ingénues and inge-dudes were screen tested, Gabriella Wilde and Alex Pettyfer won the coveted leads of Jade and David. Just last week The Hunger Games' Dayo Okeniyi signed on to play David's playful best bud. And now The Wrap reports Bruce Greenwood and Robert Patrick are the latest to join the growing cast. Based on the film inspired by the novel by Scott Spencer, Endless Love unfolds the tumultuous romance of teenagers Jade Butterfield and David Axelrod. In the original movie, her parents were bohemians, his wealthy political activists. But one of the first signs of distinction we're seeing with the remake...

The original was rated R but today it's more likely they'll try and make it PG-13 so they'll have to tone it down. Of course, this isn't 1981 anymore so the super steamy scenes with a 15 year old girl won't fly anymore anyway,...

• Seth Rogen just got a whole lot busier. The This Is the End actor and director has signed on to direct, produce, and star in a comedy that he co-wrote with Evan Goldberg — Rogen’s collaborator on Superbad, Pineapple Express, and The Watch, among others. The Interview is about a talk show host and a producer (Rogen) who somehow find themselves involved in an attempt to assassinate the North Korean prime minister. This will be Rogen’s second time in the director’s chair. And, don’t get too excited just yet, but apparently Columbia Pictures wants James Franco to...

Variety reports that Alex Pettyfer (Beastly, Magic Mike) and Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers, Carrie) will be the leads in Universal’s remake of the 1981 film Endless Love.
The story of Endless Love is based on a 1979 book by Scott Spencer. That book led to the 1981 film adaptation which starred Brooke Shields.
The plot is pretty intense, involving two overly-passionate teenage lovers who are separated after one of them accidentally commits an awful crime.
It is unknown how closely the new version will follow the first two.
Shana Feste (The Greatest, Country Strong) will direct.
Random fact: The Og Endless Love (1981) is also Tom Cruise’s first movie. I will withhold judgement. Click the link if you’re curious.

In 1981, Brooke Shields followed up her iconic turn in The Blue Lagoon with the teen-centered romance Endless Love. Based on the Scott Spencer novel, the Franco Zeffirelli-directed film centered on a girl who falls for a boy her parents don't approve of. And it helped cement Shields as a star. Now history might repeat itself as the Endless Love remake has snagged a gorgeous young ingénue of its own, with a handsome leading ingendude to boot! Variety reports Gabriella Wilde and Alex Pettyfer have been cast to play the new versions of lovers Jade and David. Wilde is best remembered from Paul W.S. Anderson's 2011 take on The Three Musketeers, and will appear as Sue Snell in Kimberly Peirce's remake Carrie later this year. Pettyfer fronted the sci-fi flop I Am Number Four, and played the duplicitous bro-friend to Channing Tatum in the breakout hit Magic Mike. Basically,...

It.s a frightening time for movies when .remakes of adaptations. garner just as many headlines as everything else. Such is the case with Universal.s Endless Love, a remake of the Franco Zeffirelli.s 1981 multi-Razzie Award nominee starring Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt, itself based on Scott Spencer.s popular novel of the same name, though many of the changes made for the film added melodramatic weirdness that Spencer never intended. Let.s hope it.s better to remake the bad stuff than the good. According to The Hollywood Reporter, five actresses are being flown out to Hollywood to read for the role of Jade, which Shields previously played, with director Shana Feste, writer-director of Country Strong and The Greatest. The names include Gabriella Wilde, from the recent Three Musketeers remake and the upcoming Carrie remake (Do you see a pattern here?); Sarah Bolger, from Once Upon a Time...

Charlie St. Cloud and 17 Again director Burr Steers is set to direct a feature film adaptation of the horror novel Breed for Summit Entertainment. Harry Potter producer David Heyman is also attached to the project to help bring it to life.
The book was written by Chase Novak, and the story follows "a couple who undergo an experimental fertility treatment that turns them into bloodthirsty savages." 10 years after they have twins, the kids discover there is something seriously wrong with their parents, and they set out on a dangerous search to find the truth behind their parents. This sounds like a disturbingly cool story!
Steers has worked with Zac Efron twice already, and it makes me wonder if we'll see him in this movie as well. I guess we'll find out soon enough. Here's the full description from of the book, which is sure to make a great horror movie!

Chase Novak‘s horror novel Breed is getting an adaptation. Summit Entertainment is behind the project, and according to the latest reports Burr Steers is already on board to write and direct the whole thing. Horror thriller is always a good choice (I guess), but I must admit that Steers -part of the story is quite a surprise. I mean, this man directed 17 Again and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, wtf?
Anyway, the most important thing is that Breed definitey has a potential. Novak’s novel centers on a couple who undergo an experimental fertility treatment that turns them into bloodthirsty savages, leading them on a desperate quest to find a cure.
Chase Novak aka Scott Spencer has written 11 novels, and he’s probably best known for his best-seller Endless Love, which has sold over 2 million copies and garnered him a nomination for the National Book Award.

Summit Entertainment continues it’s investment in genre films with the acquisition of Breed, a recently published novel from Scott Spencer (under the pseudonym “Chase Novak”). According to Deadline, Summit has already hired Burr Steers (17 Again, Charlie St. Cloud) to write and direct the film, with David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford producing.
This is likely seen as a potential franchise of films and it is mentioned that a sequel to the novel is already being developed. Breed revolves around “a couple that undergoes an experimental fertility treatment that turns them into bloodthirsty savages, leading them on a desperate quest to find a cure.” Here’s the official book synopsis:
“Critically celebrated novelist Scott Spencer delivers a Rosemary’s Baby-like novel of gothic horror, set against the backdrop of modern-day Upper East Side Manhattan.

Summit's had some success with feature adaptations of popular novels these days, with The Twilight Saga and The Perks of Being A Wallflower among the studio's credits in recent years, and Warm Bodies and Ender's Game among its upcoming films. And it seems they're looking to continue what may be a successful run of book-to-film adaptations with Chase Novak's horror novel Breed. Summit announced today that they've acquired the rights to Novak's (a.k.a. Scott Spencer) Breed, a novel published this fall, which involves a married couple taking dark measures in an effort to get pregnant. A decade later, their twin children Alice and Adam begin to wonder about the violent noises coming from their parents bedroom each night, which leads them to set out to learn the truth about their parents. On board to write and direct the adaptation is Burr Steers, while Heyday Films' David Heyman...

"Country Strong" filmmaker Shana Feste is in talks to rewrite and direct "Endless Love" for Universal Pictures says The Hollywood Reporter.
Based on Scott Spencer's 1979 novel, the story follows two teenagers and their all-consuming love for each other.
Things go wrong when the boy turns obsessive and concocts a plan to ingratiate himself with the girl’s family by setting her house on fire.
Josh Safran wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay which Feste will polish. Scott Stuber, Pam Abdy, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will produce.
The book was previously adapted for the screen in 1981 starring Brooke Shields and Martin Hewett, though is better remembered for the title song by Diana Ross.

Taking teenage infatuation to the big screen is nothing new (let’s take a minute to consider every incarnation of Romeo & Juliet we’ve ever been subjected to), so the news that Universal is planning on remaking Franco Zeffirelli‘s 1981 schlockfest, Endless Love, is perhaps the least shocking thing we’ll hear about all day. What is a bit surprising, however, is the news of who the studio is planning to tap to direct the project. Variety reports (via Cinema Blend) that Country Strong director Shana Feste is in talks for the project. As Cinema Blend notes, “as Country Strong made little more than its budget back at the box office and was widely panned by critics, it’s surprising Feste is getting a second chance to helm another picture so soon, especially considering how statistics don’t favor female filmmakers rebounding from flops.” Also, Feste is apparently the sort of director who thinks that Gwyneth Paltrow makes...
