The Hollywood filmmaking community remembered Roger Corman today as a man who had a “can-do” attitude about making movies. Along the way, he touched many lives, blazing a path for newcomers to enter the business and others to keep the lights on through his relentless drive to produce films.
Amid that hustle, he was remembered as a kind man who had a passion for what he did.
Here are some of the reactions:
Robert De Niro:
“ I’m sorry to hear of the passing of Roger. He started many of us over the years. He was a legend. May he rest in peace.”
Roger Corman was my very first boss, my lifetime mentor and my hero. Roger was one of the greatest visionaries in the history of cinema. I am absolutely devastated by his loss and send my love and deepest condolences to the Corman family. #Rip #RogerCorman pic.

Hugh Jackman’s portrayal as the iconic X-Men character has only aged like fine wine over the past two decades. The actor, who has been playing the character throughout his Hollywood career, is once again set to embody the fierce mutant in the upcoming film Deadpool & Wolverine and he looks even more remarkable donning the classic Wolverine look on-screen. However, transforming himself into the character has definitely not been an easy feat for the actor.

He has consistently maintained his physique with extreme workouts and strict diet plans, a dedication that also extended to the Deadpool threequel. Fans, who have witnessed the actor’s unwavering commitment to bringing the best possible version of the superhero, are shocked by his ability to keep up with the demanding standards that come with the role for over two decades.

The "X-Men" film franchise was one of the superhero genre's first bonafide success stories. After debuting in 2000 to decent reviews and solid gold box office, Marvel's mutants added a new level of legitimacy to comic book adaptations on film and provided a runway for other characters to make it to the silver screen. It's a shame, then, that a franchise once emblematic of its genre's greatest potential has since succumbed to its worst qualities: overcomplicated canon, problematic players behind the scenes (his name rhymes with Shmyan Shminger), and corporate interests milking spin-offs for all they could be worth, even as the udders run dry. If it weren't for the Disney-Fox merger and Marvel Studios' plan for mutant integration into the MCU, the "X-Men" franchise would be as close to dead-in-the-water as you can be.
In fairness, the X-Men became friendly with development hell long before its first film. There's just...

Judd Apatow was not happy with Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision last year to license a handful of HBO original series to Netflix. Many shows including Insecure, Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Six Feet Under, and Ballers were licensed to the streaming platform. Apatow described this move as scary because Netflix could buy around older shows and stream them to their audience, rather than investing millions on new shows. However, X-Men writer Zack Stentz couldn’t agree with Apatow’s views.

Stentz shared that creatives like Apatow should also think about making money for the people. He pointed out the example of Suits, which gained newfound popularity on Netflix and Peacock last year, raking in money years after its finale premiered.

Before Marvel Studios had the rights to the X-Men, Deadpool, Daredevil and The Fantastic Four, 20th Century Fox was secretly working on a film with all these characters. Given that at the time, Marvel Studios was only in its first Phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the audience could have been greeted with 2 parallel superhero franchises with multiple IPs sharing the same universe, both stemming from characters in the Marvel Universe.

The screenplay to the 2014 mega-hit "Guardians of the Galaxy," the 10th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was credited to director James Gunn and longtime Hollywood screenwriter Nicole Perlman. Perlman also has story credits on the films "Captain Marvel" and "Pokémon Detective Pikachu," and has previously been attached to a sequel to the 1986 Jim Henson film "Labyrinth," as well as film adaptations of the 1980s toy properties "Visionaries" and "M.A.S.K."
Perlman, according to an old article on the Marvel website, was recruited into the Marvel writing room way back in 2009 and was offered the opportunity to write a spec script for a "lesser" Marvel property as a test of her style and working capabilities. Based on their responses online, the Hollywood writers impacted by the WGA strike are happy with their deal – a lot happier than the last time around.
This new three-year contract between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers includes significant gains for the guild, including substantial raises, minimum staffing requirements, a 26% increase to residuals and guaranteed protections on A.I.
Throughout the strike, social media, X in particular, has been a reliable way for writers to share their stories and saltiest hot-takes. But after the WGA accepted the AMPTP’s deal, that refrain of complaints has turned into one of celebration – contrasted with the end of the 2007-2008 strike, which brought its share of grumbling.
The 2023 deal has been called “tremendous,” “exquisite” and “incredible.” “The writers low-key kicked the AMPTP’s collective ass,” Paul McCallion, a New York-based writer and actor, wrote.

Kenneth Branagh knew Natalie Portman was the perfect fit to play “Thor” female lead Jane Foster.
The film’s co-screenwriter Zack Stentz said in “MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios” by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards that director Branagh was “very taken with” Portman after meeting her.
“He was very taken with her, not in a romantic way, but with her intelligence,” Stentz said of Branagh (as excerpted by Vanity Fair). “Jane is a physicist, and we needed someone who could convey that intelligence. That’s what struck him about her: He said, forgive me, ‘Because the last thing we need is nuclear physicist Denise Richards.'”
Richards portrayed a nuclear physicist in 1999 James Bond film “The World Is Not Enough,” and won a Razzie for her critically panned performance.
Per Portman, she agreed to appear in “Thor” because she hoped Branagh’s take on the Marvel character would be “super weird.

Time is the measure of success or failure in the streaming world. Gal Gadot’s “Heart of Stone” earned 143 million hours in its first 10 days of Netflix availability. That fell short of Chris Hemsworth’s “Extraction 2” and Jennifer Lopez’s “The Mother,” which each notched 175 million-178 million hours in that same time period. All three movies, along with Zack Snyder’s upcoming two-part film “Rebel Moon,” represent a swiftly disappearing notion in the streaming world: The big-budget, English-language streaming movie is becoming a comparative rarity.
As one industry executive told TheWrap, “Peak streaming is over, Wall Street no longer loves it.”
Compared to just a couple of years ago, the sheer amount of direct-to-streaming movies has plummeted. Netflix, which pioneered big-budget streaming movies, will release just above 40 English-language films in 2023, compared to 75 in 2022. Insiders and analysts blame a change in financial tune. A fiery exchange of public statements preceded the potential beginning of the end for Hollywood’s writers’ strike. On Friday, leaders of the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers meet for the first time in months, but insiders tell TheWrap there’s much uncertainty on both sides.
“I’m cautiously hopeful that this is the real deal, especially since WGA leadership has privately [been] telling members that they don’t want to feed false hope by announcing anything prematurely,” “X-Men: First Class” screenwriter Zack Stentz told TheWrap. “I don’t think they’d be agreeing to renewed talks unless both sides saw at least a theoretical path forward.”
As TheWrap reported earlier this week, the heads of Hollywood’s various studios have recently met to talk plans about returning to the negotiating table. On Wednesday, insiders on both sides of the labor dispute told...

While much of the focus on the Writers Guild strike has been on television and the existential threat to writers’ rooms, screenwriters who primarily work in the film industry say that Hollywood is trending towards a new normal where they are pressured to work more without seeing their pay increase with it.
In TheWrap’s latest strike video roundtable, WGA West vice president Michele Mulroney joined “X-Men: First Class” screenwriter Zack Stentz, “Blue Beetle” writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and “Collateral” screenwriter Stuart Beattie to discuss the WGA’s push to lock in a two-step payment structure for film writers.
A two-step pay structure would ensure that writers not only get paid at the start of the project and when they turn in the first draft but would also ensure that they would get at least one smaller payment for a rewrite. Since the WGA strike began, TV writers have been front and center, with late-night shows canceled, picket lines outside studios and questions lobbed at executives at upfronts about the strike’s impact on their prime-time lineups. But film writers who joined in the strike effort say they face the same struggles, and some worry they’re being left out of the conversation.
Some flashpoints in the tense negotiations that led to the strike, like the use of mini-rooms, are specific to TV. But film screenwriters have seen their pay stagnate, too, the Writers Guild of America said. Many film genres have become more viable as streaming titles than as theatrical releases, leading feature writers to work on projects that often have less favorable pay scales.

Universal’s “Fast X” is not bringing in the box office riches that past “Fast & Furious” films used to in North America with a $67 million domestic opening, but it is still finding great success internationally with a $253 million overseas launch to earn $319 million worldwide.
In the U.S., “Fast X” isn’t showing signs that it will top the $173 million final total of its predecessor “F9,” a film that came out during the early stages of box office rebuilding in summer 2021. Its $67.5 million opening has met pre-release projections but is below the $70 million launch of “F9.”
The film also received a B+ on CinemaScore, 82% positive score on PostTrak and 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. While “Fast X” will still have some premium format support alongside “The Little Mermaid” on Memorial Day weekend, that good-but-not-excellent audience reception may not be enough to give the film legs to reach $200 million domestically.

Among the issues discussed were the initial vibe among strike participants, how one of his early television successes may have been a casualty of the last WGA strike in 2007, and what leverage the streamers and the networks have up their sleeves if they are “smart” enough to use them.

"Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" first hit the airwaves in 1993, and even though that original iteration of Rangers didn't last all that long, the series has remained remarkably enduring. 30 years later, the series has aired nearly 1,000 episodes through its various iterations, has inspired hundreds of issues of comics books, millions in toy sales, and is truly a globally recognized brand with huge staying power. Still, the franchise has never managed to fully crack the code in making the jump to movies.
Two films, the "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" movie in 1995 and "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie," did fine enough by '90s "kids movies based on a show" standards, which were ultimately more about selling toys and copies of the films on VHS.

Walt Disney’s announcement that Bob Chapek would be stepping down as CEO and the retired Bob Iger was replacing him effective immediately has stunned the industry, with Hollywood taking the news with a mix of shock, confusion and (in most cases) approval.
A rival studio source noted that the timing was suspect and that it was less of a shock that Chapek had been removed than that Iger had agreed to return. “There is a real question of what is expected of (Iger),” they said, asking for anonymity, adding that it is generally expected that he would undo most of Chapek’s structural choices.
Multiple industry sources expressed shock at Iger’s return because the former (and now present) CEO so often declared that he and his wife Willow Bay were enjoying retirement. Moreover, this transition occurred just before Thanksgiving week and days before the theatrical release of Walt...

This year marks 25 years since the release of Paul Verhoeven’s movie adaptation of the Robert A. Heinlein novel, Starship Troopers. It’s a great movie, although not one that hues tightly to its source material. You could even be forgiven for thinking the director had never read the book or that this was a completely unrelated film which has had the Starship Troopers title slapped on it to sell more tickets.
Because, as it turns out, both of those things are true. Verhoeven is on record as saying he tried to read Starship Troopers but stopped after two chapters “because it was so boring;” meanwhile the movie began as a script called “Bug Hunt at Outpost 7.” Scriptwriter Ed Neumeier even described the original idea for the film as being “a big, silly, jingoistic, xenophobic, let’s-go-out-and-kill-the-enemy movie, and I had settled on the idea that it should be against insects…...

Exclusive: Zack Stentz’s (Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous) newly launched Electric Brain Entertainment has secured rights to Korean IP Deep for TV adaptation.
The idea is for the popular Korean webtoon series to get both Korean- and English-language drama versions with overlapping plot lines and cast. Thor, X-Men: First Class and Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous writer Stentz and producer Geoffrey Clark (The 2nd) will spearhead the spinoffs through Electric Brain.
The sci-fi thriller series follows the families of humans who went missing and suddenly begin to reappear from the ocean as living corpses, unaged and unchanged in the years and even decades since their disappearances.
Ko Dae-Jung, who planned and developed the well-received Korean original, partnered with Hugh Cha, director of the Asia Division at Bohemia Group and CEO of Stage Bridge, to propose global versions of the drama to Stentz. Stentz and Geoffrey J. Clark will serve as producers.

John le Carré was lauded Sunday as a writer’s writer whose productivity and singular storytelling style was praised by fans ranging from late night star Seth Meyers to fellow novelists Stephen King and Paulo Coelho.
Le Carré, who died Dec. 12 at the age of 89, was known as a master of espionage fiction who turned out 25 novels over more than a half-century of writing. His signature works — including “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold” — captured drama and tension of Cold War geopolitical jockeying like no other contemporary scribe.
Le Carré’s novels were widely adapted as film and TV properties over the years, including 2005’s “The Constant Gardener,” which earned an Oscar for star Rachel Weisz, and 1965’s “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold,” starring Richard Burton. AMC had a hit in 2016 with limited series “The Night Manager,” starring Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie.

Gunpowder & Sky’s sci-fi label Dust is developing a modern take on the classic H.G. Wells novel The Island of Dr. Moreau. The series will be titled Moreau and will be written by Zack Stentz.
“The double helix wasn’t even a twinkle in Watson & Crick’s eye when H.G. Wells first wrote The Island of Dr. Moreau, but his 1896 novel proved astonishingly prescient about how unlocking the secrets of DNA would open the door to humanity playing God with the natural world in strange and frightening ways,” said Stentz. “And now, in the shadow of the Crispr revolution, it felt like the perfect time to revisit Moreau and bring it into our own 21st Century world of transgenic animals, designer babies and other scientific advances Wells never could have dreamed of.

“Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous” takes place within the same timeline as the 2015 film but sees the dinosaur rampage through the eyes of six teenagers who are in for a once-in-a-lifetime experience at a new adventure camp on the opposite side of Isla Nublar. When dinosaurs wreak havoc across the island, the campers are unable to reach the outside world and will quickly go from strangers, to friends, to family as they band together to survive.
Season 2 of “Camp Cretaceous” “will find the stranded campers struggling to survive on Isla Nublar as the series charges forward beyond the events of the ‘Jurassic World’ film.”

The Ankylosaurus is filmmaker Colin Trevorrow’s favorite dinosaur. In retrospect that shouldn’t be a surprise considering the armored herbivore makes a major appearance in Jurassic World, both that creature and Trevorrow’s first Jurassic Park movie. But Trevorrow made his adoration for Ankylosaurus clear during a discussion about the new Netflix animated series, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, earlier this week. Which, as it just so happens, features a baby Ankylosaurus that the kids in the show affectionately name Bumpy.
“We thought it’d be cool [for] a character like Ben to have this sort of bond and epiphany,” Kreamer told us about the origins of adding Bumpy to the series. “I think originally in [creator Zack Stentz’s] version, Bumpy was not an Ankylosaurus, but I think somewhere along the line, we stumbled upon the idea of ‘what if that was the herd that Bumpy was released into?’ The one that the Indominus attacked.
