Sony Pictures Animation, which has fallen on hard times in recent years, highlighted diversity and female empowerment as part of its comeback at Wednesday’s slate preview in Culver City. The biggest news was confirmation that Miles Morales, the mixed race web-slinging teen (African-American and Hispanic), will star in the untitled “Spider-Man” feature coming December 21, 2018.
Morales, created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli to succeed the late Peter Parker in the comics, has already become a TV animation staple on Disney Xd’s “Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors” (initially voiced by Donald Glover).
The animated “Spider-Man” marks a return to Spa for Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”), who directed “The Lego Movie” and are currently making the “Han Solo” standalone “Star Wars” feature.
In a pre-recorded video message from London, Lord said, “What inspired us the most is that anyone can wear the mask.

Thursday 4 Am: Get ready for a wacky weekend when four major studio releases will be joining an already crowded marketplace. Good thing DreamWorks Animation and Twentieth Century Fox turned on the ignition to rev Turbo into the domestic box office race on Wednesday. This non-sequel original story opened #1 with $5.8M into 3,552 theaters and received a coveted ‘A’ CinemaScore which should help word of mouth by Friday. The 3D toon was followed close behind by Universal/Illumination’s three-week-old 3D toon Despicable Me 2 ($5.6M last night but on its way to $500M worldwide today), #3 Sony/Happy Madison’s Grown-Ups ($4.3 for a $55.8M North American cume) and #4 Warner Bros/Legendary’s Pacific Rim ($3.5M and passing $100M worldwide). Sorry to repeat myself, but tracking has been unreliable this summer just as it’s been for some time now. But that hasn’t stopped all those morons at other media outlets from...

Ryan Reynolds is close to inking a deal to voice the lead role in DreamWorks Animation's Turbo. The film is being directed by David Soren (Merry Madagascar) from a script he co-wrote with Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After). Turbo's story follows "an ordinary garden snail who dreams of becoming the fastest snail in the world. When a freak accident gives him extraordinary speed, Turbo sets out to try to make his dream come true."
Lisa Stewart (Monsters vs. Aliens) is producing the film, which is slated for release on June 7, 2013. This deal will mark the second film that Reynolds has worked on with the studio. He also lent his voice to Chris Sanders' adventure comedy The Croods, which Dwa will open on March 1, 2013, three months prior to Turbo.
I am looking forward to seeing Reynolds in The Green Lantern and think he's a great actor. Turbo sounds like a cute film.

DreamWorks Animation has released a new trailer for Monsters vs. Aliens and the toon branch has once again delivered something worth talking about.
Monsters vs. Aliens Trailer
Monsters vs. Aliens is directed by Rob Letterman and Conrad Vernon, produced by Lisa Stewart and co-produced by Jill Hopper and Latifa Ouaou. The film marks the theatrical debut of DreamWorks Animation's Ultimate 3-D, the studio's proprietary production process of authoring its animated films in 3-D from start to finish.
Judging by the first two trailers for Monsters vs. Aliens, one can see that DreamWorks has been following the rulebook when it comes to making a successful CG-animation.

After two bootlegs over summer, DreamWorks Animation has finally released the first official trailer for their upcoming CG sci fi adventure, Monsters vs. Aliens. I know, a lot of descriptive words there, but the film deserves 'em.

The film marks the theatrical debut of DreamWorks Animation's Ultimate 3-D, the studio's proprietary production process of authoring its animated films in 3-D from start to finish.
Let me start by saying that Monsters vs. Aliens looks like a ton of fun and there is no denying that the CG animation has a very unique and very impressive cast.
