After last week's "Mad Men" stumbled a bit by grappling with a major historical event, "For Immediate Release" rebounded in high style to deliver the season's most thrilling, entertaining and finest hour yet.
Opening with the possibility of Scdp going public and ending with a merger between Scdp and Ted Chaough's Cgc -- yes, folks, Peggy and Don are co-workers again -- this was a hour packed with bombshells (Pete catches his stepfather at a whorehouse!), explosions (Joan's fury over Don dumping the Jaguar account) and killer one-liners (did we mention Julia Ormond's return as Megan's mother?).
There was so much hot-blooded ad agency action, Don didn't even have time to reflect on how miserable he is ... on the inside.
[Note: In the spirit of showrunner Matthew Weiner declaring that this season is about Dr. Arnold Rosen telling Don, "People will do anything to alleviate their anxiety," we're tracking the happiness of key characters week by week.]
The "Mad Men" happiness index, week five:
1) Don (last week, #8): From the very start, "Mad Men" has been a show driven by Don Draper's unhappiness, but if there's...

When I was a kid, I knew quite early on that I loved movies. From the first time I sat in a darkened theater and watched other worlds materialize before me, I knew that I would do anything I could to be closer to them. I knew I didn’t have the chops to write screenplays because I lacked the depth of imagination to create a cohesive story. I knew I couldn’t act because I wasn’t leading man material. I knew I couldn’t direct because I’m not a savvy manager. Then it hit me – I just like to talk about movies. Though at that age, I didn’t think there was ever a job that would pay anybody to just simply talk about movies.

On "Who The (Bleep) Did I Marry?" (Wed., 9 p.m. Et on ID), viewers were introduced to Yvette. She survived a harrowing ordeal at the hands of her abusive alcoholic husband, Roger.
After the couple had separated Roger still wouldn’t leave Yvette alone.
Things took a brutal turn when Roger showed up at Yvette’s work, doused her in gasoline, and then set her on fire. Thankfully, Yvette survived, but the experience left with her deep physical and emotional scars.
"I just want people to look at me as normal," she said, "and for myself to feel as normal as possible."
Roger is now serving a life sentence in jail, and Yvette lives with the after-effects of the attack: "It’s an everyday struggle for me to even get up, get out of bed, go in my kitchen to cook dinner because I’m near the fire."
Need help?...

After doing the rounds on VoD for a few weeks, where many of you will have seen it, Sarah Polley's "Take This Waltz" starts to roll out in theaters from tomorrow, and we can't recommend it enough; it's a messy, sometimes frustrating film, but a deeply felt, beautifully made and wonderfully acted one, and we named it last week as one of the best of the year so far. It is not, however, recommended as a date movie, fitting into a long cinematic tradition of painful examinations of broken, decaying, collapsing or dead relationships.
After all, it's one of the more universal human experiences; unless you get very lucky, everyone who falls in love will at some point have the wrenching experience of falling out of it, or being fallen out of love with. And when done best in film, it can be bruising and borderline torturous for a filmmaker and an audience,...

So...I'll put this out there.
Am I the only one rooting for a Don and Peggy hook-up? Most of the pieces were in place, but it remains to be seen what the concept will look like put together, an apropos assessment given the content of "The Suitcase" itself. My hope wained after Don's puking fits left far too bad a taste in all our mouths for Peggy to succumb to any advances, but their night together, for all its insanity, put their emotional needs on display more than anything physical.
Last week's episode told stories of personal victory, whereas last night's more intimate tale focused on bringing to light the more embarassing truths we hide. Peggy still thinks about the child she's given up, and Don makes her the latest Anna Draper, the only one who really knows him now that dear Anna's moved on, suitcase and all.
Not only that,...

Mad Men star Christina Hendricks has revealed that she wouldn't rule out a reunion between Roger and her character Joan. The pair previously had an affair, which ended when Roger (John Slattery) had a heart attack. Joan later married Greg (Samuel Page). However, Hendricks has now told the New York Post that Joan and Roger still have feelings for each other. "I think there is an undeniable caring about the two of them," she said. "And in a way that maybe you don't see with other characters. When he had his heart attack and she's left helpless, you can feel that yearning. He wants comfort from her and she wants to offer that, but can't (more)...

Hamsterdam, MD - News at 4:20. As part of the celebration for the upcoming season of Weeds, Glick University polled over 4,000 Americans about what TV News personalities they wanted to see get high during a broadcast.
Naturally there were ground rules including the disqualifications of news organizations that contain notorious on air potheads. This meant no votes were collected for the cast of The Daily Show, Colbert Report and Fox and Friends. You think Steve Doocey is sober? Hard to think that any of those folks have eyes that aren’t pied 24-7.
10, Bill O’Reilly (Fox News) had a lot of folks who reacted that it’d be like, “Dude, I’m getting high with dad.” Of course this initial elation is cut down with the horrifying fact of “Dude, I’m getting high with dad and it’s just not someone I need to party with.”
