From Swayze to Rousey? If MGM has its way, the mantle of Road House’s bouncer could be passed to Ronda Rousey, the Ufc fighter who is making inroads into acting. The studio has been developing a new version of the cult 1989 drama since at least 2013, digging into its archives for another memorable Swayze title to add to the list of his films getting a fresh treatment, which already includes Ghost and Point Break. Back when it was first announced, Rob Cohen was attached to develop the project with Michael Stokes on board to write the script, but Variety’s report indicates that MGM is going another way with the screenplay and there’s no mention of Cohen. The original Road House was set at The Double Deuce, a sleazy music bar in the small town of Jasper, Missouri, “the kind of place where they sweep up the eyeballs after closing”. The owner,...

From The Craft and The Birds to The Fugitive and She's All That, the many film reboots and remakes currently in the works...
Over the years that Den Of Geek has been going, we've regularly been charting the assortment of reboots and remakes that are making their way through the Hollywood system. This, then, is the current state of play. We've removed a bunch of projects that seem utterly dead - the once mooted remakes of Videodrome and Timecrimes, for instance - but we'll keep this list up to date as and when we hear of more.
Without further ado, here's what's coming up...

Michael Stokes wants you to see veterans in an entirely new light. The Los Angeles-based photographer is making headlines for his project, a book featuring 14 Gulf War vets posing nude, and it's easy to see why. Stokes has been hard at work on Always Loyal for the past two and a half years with one goal in mind: to inspire others by seeing "people who've been dealing with disability and injuries their whole lives." The portraits display a staggering juxtaposition of wounded soldiers, showcasing every bit of their bodies in an undeniably erotic manner. "People will say it's not dignified for a veteran to be clothed unnecessarily, but I don't even respond," Stokes...

It takes a lot of guts to say, "We just did the last, indistinguishable Underworld sequel, maybe one of the biggest stars in the world wants to work with us!" But that's just what's happening with Millennium Films and directors Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein. The duo are behind South China Sea, a pretty bombastic-sounding action film, and their sights are set high on who they want to lead the project. Someone put their big boy pants on today! Deadline reports that an offer is out to Tom Cruise to star in South China Sea. Written by Kerry Williamson (Alex Cross) with a re-write by Michael Stokes (The Marsh), the action thriller has an absolutely classic set-up. The story follows a tough-as-nails female police lieutenant who must free her nemesis, a legendary American pirate, from custody. Not only is he the only one who can take down a team of...

Another '80s action flick is getting a remake: Patrick Swayze-starring "Road House."
The 1989 film featured Swayze as a bouncer with a shady past who's hired to work at a Missouri watering hole, where he soon runs into trouble with the locals. The remake already has a script (written by Michael Stokes) and the project just hired veteran action director Rob Cohen.
Cohen helmed the first "Fast and the Furious" movie, as well as "XXX" and last year's Tyler Perry box-office bomb "Alex Cross." So he's had a mixed bag, success-wise. Maybe "Road House" is his ticket to redemption?
Cohen's currently shooting "The Boy Next Door," starring Jennifer Lopez as "a psychotic Milf," per The Hollywood Reporter. Expect "Road House" up next on the director's docket once that project wraps.

Fast and Furious director Rob Cohen is set to direct a remake of Patrick Swayze's 1989 film Road House. Why? I don't know! I don't want to see a remake of Road House. Hell, I didn't really like the original film anyway.
The original film followed a tough bouncer with a mysterious past who was hired to tame a dirty bar in Missouri.
The script for the film was written by Michael Stokes, who also wrote Millennium Films’ action movie Crash Bandits, which is another film that Cohen will be directing.
Cohen most recently directed the terrible film Alex Cross, and he’s currently directing the thriller The Boy Next Door, which stars Jennifer Lopez as a woman having an affair with her teenage neighbor.
This just seems like a pointless remake that I don't see making very much money when all is said and done. Via: The Wrap...

Yes, there's a remake of the 80s favorite Road House on the way, and Patrick Swayze is probably roundhouse kicking in his grave. The Wrap reports that MGM is remaking the film which followed Swayze as a tough bar bouncer with a mysterious past who spruces up a gross bar in Missouri and also falls for a local bar patron (Kelly Lynch). It's not clear how this remake will handle the story, but Joel Silver will produce the film and now The Fast and the Furious and xXx director Rob Cohen has been hired to helm the remake, so this likely won't be a small film. The real test will be who can fill Swayze's bad ass shoes. Michael Stokes is writing the film, and since he's done everything from children's programming like "Babar" to lesser known films like Exit Speed, we're not sure what to expect. Though with someone like Cohen on board,...

The Hollywood remake machine trundles on, and the latest classic movie in it's sights is one that will no doubt stoke the ire of many a movie fan (myself included). 1989's Road House, which had Patrick Swayze in the iconic role as James Dalton, the bad ass bouncer of a small town dive bar, has being picked up by MGM, with Rob Cohen (the first The Fast and The Furious, xXx, Daylight) attached to direct. Michael Stokes, whose previous script Crash Bandits is also in development with Cohen, will be providing the script. Now, I wouldn't call Road House one of the cinematic greats, but it is a fantastically cheesy and infinitely entertaining movie, and I'm hoping against hope that this remake will do it justice. via The Wrap...

The Patrick Swayze-headlined Road House is getting a big screen remake...
MGM is set to continue its plan to remake some of its popular 80s and 90s movies, and this time, the fickle finger of film fate has landed at the door of a much-loved Patrick Swayze movie. That movie is Road House.
The film saw the late Swayze starring opposite Kelly Lynch, with the former playing a bouncer in a bar that... well, let's just say it's the kind of bar where bouncers come in useful.
The remake already has a writer in place, with Michael Stokes having penning a screenplay for the new Road House. And Rob Cohen, the director of the original xXx and The Fast And The Furious movies is set to helm it.
There's no timescale for the film that we know of, but if there's a script and director already locked down,...

With one Patrick Swayze hit headed for the small screen (Ghost), it would seem studios have been bitten by the remake bug for another of his successful films. And this one might be more controversial: MGM has dug into the archives and emerged with Road House, handing the task of crafting a new version to Rob Cohen.Michael Stokes has written the current draft of the script, which will give a vague update to the 1989 story. In case you’re unaware, Road House was set at The Double Deuce, a sleazy music bar in the small town of Jasper, Missouri, “the kind of place where they sweep up the eyeballs after closing”. The owner, tired of his joint being wrecked by muscle-bound “power drinkers” and provocative bimbos, hires the best bouncer in the business (Swayze) to cool things down. Famously, he starts off charming but doesn't hesitate to take extreme...

MGM is remaking the 1989 Patrick Swayze film Road House and has tapped Rob Cohen to direct it. The original told the story of a tough but soft spoken bouncer who takes a job in a small town bar only to run afoul of a corrupt business man who has a stranglehold on the townfolk. The movie was one of Swayze’s biggest hits and was part of his ascent to stardom. (Ghost, released in 1990, was his next movie.)

Though we thought directing last year’s slightly shonky Alex Cross might have seen him condemned to director jail for a while, Rob Cohen is still lining up future jobs. He’s now attached to make Crash Bandits for Nu Image/Millennium. No, it’s not an off-brand rip-off film based on the Crash Bandicoot console game, it’s actually the story of two rival treasure hunters who specialise in salvaging old plane wrecks. When they get wind of the ultimate prize lurking in the Amazon, the race is on.It all sounds a little bit like Sahara to us, though Cohen does at least know his way around an action sequence. Crash Bandits has been sitting in development for a while now, originally penned by Michael Stokes and at one time considered as a John McTiernan vehicle with Hayden Christensen starring. Now Cohen will re-write the script and start looking for a new cast.

Every Halloween this reviewer needs to see a horror film everyday or every other day. Satisfying this horror fix is Michael Stokes' A Haunting at the Beacon aka The Beacon. This is a film released on DVD September 13th and starring are Teri Polo (Meet the Parents), David Rees Snell ("The Shield") and Michael Ironside. Haunting at the Beacon is perfect for this holiday of souls because the writing is tense, the characters are interesting and the climax made this reviewer look twice. It is hard not to look twice when you see Ironside snarling in icky green face paint.
Polo plays Bryn Shaw a woman dealing with grief and the loss of her son. Unfortunately, she picks a haunted apartment building to find solace. A young boy appears in a black and white photograph as a ghostly figure. Later, he sneers with devilish eyes.

While still settling into their new home, Bryn keeps spotting a little boy around the building, and hearing violent arguments coming from the apartment next door. Having reason to believe that the boy lives in said apartment, Bryn calls the police. This is when she discovers that the boy, Ronny, died in the building due to an apparent accident. And the next door apartment where the boy did actually live has been empty for months. Bryn’s husband, Paul, and her sister, Christina (Marnette Patterson), believe that she is...

Previously titled The Beacon, Take 2 Releasing will distribute a Haunting at the Beacon on DVD September 13th. This is a tale of a mother's (Teri Polo) woe, as a deceased child looks for supernatural revenge! Haunting at the Beacon also stars Michael Ironside, Davis Rees Snell and Elaine Hendrix.
Fans of film might recognize director Stokes from his writing on the horror feature The Marsh (2006) starring Forest Whitaker, or the high-octane thriller Exit Speed (2008). In an interview with the Sunday Times [via The Playlist], Gemma Arterton talked about her new Britsh comedy, Tamara Drewe (opening in the UK this Friday) and dropped a few hints about a number of projects in the offing, while confirming her commitment to the upcoming Clash of the Titans sequel.
Arterton has been cast in The Keys to the Street, an adaptation of Ruth Rendell’s thriller novel penned by Christopher Nolan. The Keys to the Street centers a bone marrow donor, Mary (Arterton), who enters a relationship with the man who’s life she saved, a man who may not be what he appears to be.
Hinting at her excitement about the film, Arterton said, “”Why on earth has this film been sitting around?” Originally set up by Fox Searchlight, the project has been gestating for a number of years now, but hopefully, thanks to a re-write by Michael Stokes, as...

Gemma Arterton is starring in a new Christopher Nolan movie! There, do I have your attention? Ok, then it's time to come clean a little. The movie in question is The Keys to the Street, which really was written by Christopher Nolan. but more than 10 years ago. And he's not directing. And at one point the script was rewritten by Michael Stokes, whose last credit was the direct-to-dvd horror thriller The Beacon. And there's no actual telling how much of Nolan's original script will be in the final film. But hey, The Playlist (who dug up the news in an interview Arterton did with England's Sunday Times) are choosing to have hope, so I will too. Arterton's excited about it, at least, acknowledging that the script has been around since before Memento but that it didn't deserve to languish: "Why on earth has this film been sitting around?" Arterton also...

James Wan (Saw, Death Sentence) will direct and oversee screenplay development on Nightfall, an adaptation of the 2007 graphic novel by Scott O. Brown about a man sentenced to a prison facility run by vampires, according to Deadline.
The novel focuses on David Paxton, an “industrious, right-wing survivalist” locked away in a Texas prison where vampires feed on the inmates. His only hope of escape is a riot and an uneasy alliance with a ruthless killer.
This should not be confused with the sci-fi short story by Isaac Asimov, a version of the DC Comics supervillain, or the similar script by Michael Stokes about two mercenaries who kidnap a Vampire queen.
It has been interesting to see how the vampire genre has evolved and been interpreted in the past few decades. Interview with a Vampire re-established your typical Victorian bloodsuckers in the post-modern era, only to be replaced four years later...

Michael Stokes' film The Beacon , we've been informed, is now taking the moniker Haunting at the Beacon . That's revised sales artwork you see on the right - a contrast to what we had shown you in March . The film played to Paranoia Film Festival audiences around that time and it appears to still be seeking distribution. Teri Polo, David Rees Snell, Michael Urie and Michael Ironside star. You can watch the trailer right here ! An updated synopsis is below. Perhaps it's not Stokes' fault, but it seems that sales rep American World Pictures is trying to cash in on The Haunting in Connecticut 's success by tossing the "haunting" in the title. While trying to get their lives back on track after the disappearance and presumed drowning of their four year old son,...

The first (hopefully) annual Paranoia Film Festival on the illustrious Queen Mary has come and gone, so of course people have been wondering which film won the Best Feature award.
We recently got word from the winner himself, Michael Stokes, that the entry he wrote and directed, The Beacon, took top honors for the weekend. Strange that we haven't heard much about this film, but that seems about to change thanks to the kudos handed out during Paranoia Fest. The Beacon’s leading lady, Teri Polo (pictured below), was also honored, winning the award for Best Actress.
A bit of plot has been provided by the filmmakers as follows: While trying to get their lives back on track after the loss of their four-year-old son, Bryn (Polo) and Paul Shaw (David Rees Snell) move to the charming old Beacon Apartments. Bryn begins seeing a ghostly little boy skulking around the building.
