Vince McMahon has a lot of negative qualities to him. He’s an egomaniacal, out-of-touch, petty sociopath who will chase people around the workplace with soiled underwear on a stick. Despite being an eccentric psycho, Vince still has his positives. One of them is how whenever WrestleMania comes by, he tends to treat the roster like Ebenezer Scrooge treats people on Christmas Day. WrestleMania is the biggest payday of the year and it’s a show where they try to get as many people on as possible so that even some of the lowest-ranking folks can earn some big money.
It can take many forms, from ten-man tag matches, Fatal 4-Ways, Money in the Bank, or even just tossing in a bunch of pointless singles matches featuring guys who aren’t even feuding. The most tried and true way to get a bunch of wrestlers on the show with little effort is a battle royal.

In the fictional world of pro wrestling, drawing #30 might be portrayed as a random bit of luck, but there's reasoning for that spot.
WWE’s Royal Rumble works because of its controlled chaos. The story of the match is that anyone can win, but luck creates a massive handicap. If it wasn’t pre-determined, we’d see an awful lot more winners from the #30 spot. I mean, ever watch a Cpu simulated version of a Rumble in a video game? There’s like a 2/5 chance of that last entrant winning.
If that was a normal thing in WWE, that would get old real quick. While a few people have won at #30, the spot is usually given to someone who is supposed to come off as a real threat – Especially because of their lucky final spot – but really aren’t a viable winner. In fact, if someone earns...

Every Royal Rumble has to start with someone and these pairs of competitors tend to have some meaning behind their appearances.
One of the things that makes the Royal Rumble so great is the illusion that everything is random. When the countdown ends, we don’t truly know who is going to run out most of the time. The full roster is a mystery, as is its order. But only in storyline. After all, wrestling is predetermined, so all of this is planned and written. That’s why the last five or six spots are usually the heavy hitters.
The #30 spot tends to be pretty straightforward. Outside of the three times when it’s gone to the winner, the final entrant is usually a specific kind of wrestler who is supposed to come off as high-level and threatening, but one that we know has zero real chance winning the match.

Since the second WrestleMania, the show has been home to many over-the-top-rope free-for-alls featuring giants and football players.

Unquestionably, the biggest wrestling stars on offer at the original WrestleMania event were Hulk Hogan and ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper. They were the glue holding the actual grappling side of things together, along with others like Paul Orndorff, Andre The Giant and Big John Studd. However, Vince McMahon didn’t believe professional wrestling was enough to make the event feel grand by itself.
For that very reason, he enlisted the help of celebrities like Mr. T, Liberace and Muhammad Ali. Mixing his WWF Superstars with these household names greatly helped ‘Mania, and it can’t be denied that the show is still the biggest highlight on the annual wrestling calendar to this day.
Back in 1985 however, not everyone was on board with McMahon’s vision. Some felt he was tarnishing the legacy of his father’s promotional techniques, turning wrestling into more of a casual entertainment attraction than a credible business.

WWE have a lot of explaining to do as the road to WrestleMania shortens by the week.
While Shane McMahon’s shocking return was undoubtedly the most awesome thing that’s happened on a Monday night show for some time, his proposed match against The Undertaker at Mania just makes no sense.
Why would The Phenom go into bat for Vince McMahon? And since we all want Shane to win and take control of Raw, are we supposed to boo Taker at ‘his’ show? In his home state of Texas?
Hopefully this murkiest of waters would be cleared up so we could actually look forward to the Grandaddy of The All rather than questioning it.
With Brock Lesnar not scheduled to appear on this week’s show – and Roman Reigns suffering with a kayfabe injury, mind you – Dean Ambrose would surely be in a reduced role which would leave WWE scuppered somewhat.

Bobby “The Brain” Heenan. Mention his name to a wrestling fan, particularly an old school one, and you can guarantee that person will smile. Over an illustrious career that spanned over five decades and saw Heenan work as a wrestler, manager, color commentator, TV host and more, Bobby was a part of literally hundreds of moments and memories in wrestling. Enough for him to fill two biographies which, incidentally, are both worth checking out if you haven’t already.
Heenan was an integral part of what is still considered to be the greatest wrestling attraction of all time – Hulk Hogan vs Andre The Giant at Wrestlemania III. When the babyface Andre first walked out onto Piper’s Pit with Heenan at his side, prompting a devastated Hogan to ask “What are you doing with him?”, the road to WrestleMania officially began. Every great hero needs a great villain to battle, for without evil, there can not be good. Without Darth Vader, there is no Luke Skywalker. Without the Joker, there is no Batman.
In any event, nothing can revitalize a character like a good heel turn. The most recent major WWE heel turn took place when Seth Rollins turned against his brothers in the Shield and became the latest Corporate Champion. Recently, some online fans have advocated turning either Dean Ambrose or Roman Reigns heel to fill that top bad guy spot, shaking up the main event scene and giving us fresh matches.
With all this recent talk about heel turns and how they could potentially greatly improve the promotion, I thought it would be a good time to look back through history at some of the best and most effective heel turns we’ve ever seen in wrestling.

The 1989 Royal Rumble was a historic show because it was the first time the Rumble was a pay-per-view show. The previous year’s Rumble was a three hour event on USA Network that was done as a counter to an Nwa PPV on the same night. After the success of that show in 1988, WWE decided to make it an annual PPV event.
With the launch of the Rumble as an annual January PPV event, it meant that WWE would have four standard PPVs every year with the Rumble starting the year off, then WrestleMania in late March or early April, SummerSlam in August and Survivor Series in November. They became known as the “big four” events in the WWE year until King of the Ring started in 1993 and monthly PPVs began in 1995.
The WWE Champion going into the show was Randy Savage, who held the title for nearly ten months at this point.

You don’t have to be a fan of WWE for too long before you notice that they tend to like their superstars to be larger than life. Some of them aren’t just large in attitude but also have the appearance of being huge monsters, often towering over other superstars and using their height and strength to dominate matches. With WWE: True Giants we take a look at some of the larger behemoths.
Featuring some superstars you would expect, and lacking a few that should really be there the main documentary is a good look at some of the wrestlers from the past and present that we’ve come to love (or love to hate). Some of them have been “faces” often others were “heels” but they still had their place in the history of the squared circle and have also many made their way into the Hall of Face.

Marvel Studios is taking its biggest risk yet with Guardians of the Galaxy, banking on an obscure team of heroes to bridge the gap until the next Avengers flick roars into theaters. But there's an even larger obstacle standing in the way of box-office success: Dave Bautista.
To the uninitiated, Bautista is a six-time world champion in Vince McMahon's wrestling circus, and one of the most iconic squared-circle stars of the last decade. In Guardians, he plays intergalactic warrior Drax the Destroyer, which is unquestionably his biggest role to date.

The world of professional wrestling has, for many years, featured hundreds of various alliances, groups of men and women who, for countless reasons, teamed together in order to achieve something that they would be unable to achieve alone. Be it a group of good guys sticking together, as friends, to take down the heels, or the bad guys forming a gang as a way to intimidate, attack and overthrow the babyfaces. It has worked for decades and continues to this very day, with factions such as The Shield and The Wyatt Family (oh… and don’t forget 3Mb) running rough-shot through WWE on their way to super-stardom. But, like I said, factions aren’t a new thing, they’ve been around for as long as steel folding chairs, brittle announce tables and sneaky managers, and this release is WWE’s look at some of the standout factions that have firmly...

Some wrestlers only get one shot at the big time. Here are the Royal Rumble competitors who made the best of it...and those who didn't.
There’s something truly special about the Royal Rumble. It’s creative and filled with so many possibilities. Well, not always possibilities. There are certain years where the winner is so set in stone that even a child can find it obvious a month in advance. Yet they still rule because once every year, WWE puts on a wrestling party. A bunch of the roster will take part in one match and we get to see a snapshot of the company.
Older Royal Rumbles are like a class photo or a time capsule that best represent the year or even era and one thing that really magnifies what the Royal Rumble is all about is the one-timer. The kind of wrestler...

WWE and 2K Games have finally made the long-awaited roster announcement for their upcoming WWE 2K14 video game, boasting a surprisingly beefy line-up of over 80 superstars. In addition to the 30 Years of WrestleMania roster already announced, we were given a full list of the WWE Superstars and Divas who would be filling out 2K Games’ first time publishing a wrestling game (albeit still with the same developers as before, Yukes).
It’s safe to say that, as in every year, there are a few notable omissions from the roster – Curtis Axel, Rob Van Dam, Big E. WWE2K14 had a fairly sizable presence at Pax Prime 2013, including a makeshift right that was filled with demo stations of the upcoming game. I myself entered it to speak with Bryan Williams, one of the game's lead game designers.
We spoke about what differentiates a wrestling game and a fighting game, the differences between a Wrestlemania 1 match and a Wrestlemania 29 match, plus more.
MTV Multiplayer: Everyone tries to view wrestling games like fighting games. But they're not. How do you feel about this confusion and what is being done to make the distinction?
Williams: We make it loud and clear that this is not Street Fighter, this is not Tekken, this is an amalgamation of a whole different forms of disciples. Our game is very unique. Because wrestling is very unique! A unique art form, a unique form of entertainment. So in our game,...

Last weekend the WWE held its annual Summerslam event, one of the largest pay per view events of the year. As part of the build up to the event, the WWE held a cross-promotion for the upcoming WWE 2K14 video game that highlighted the “30 years of Wrestlemania” focus within the game.
Naturally, within this announcement the initial roster for the game was revealed, continuing the trend of including both current and former WWE superstars. While the usual suspects are around with The Rock, Triple H and John Cena included, there were a few surprises with the inclusion of Yokozuna and Razor Ramon.
Right now, it seems the roster is only accommodating those who will feature within the single player experience, hence the “30 Years of Wrestlemania” slogan, with the remainder of the WWE superstars to be revealed at a later date. The most obvious future inclusions will be current WWE superstars...

Last week we mentioned WWE 2K14's upcoming main attraction; the 30 Years Of Wrestlemania Mode will allow players to experience the greatest match ups that have taken place in the self-professed "showcase of the immortals".
Only a small handful of characters were revealed initially, and the rest were promised to follow. Which took place yesterday, during TwitchTV's SummerSlam livestream. Did anyone catch the show, by the way? Lesnar vs. Punk is clearly a match of the year contender.
Anyhow, here's the entire line-up, courtesy of Polygon:

Over the weekend, 2K unveiled the beginnings of the roster for their hugely-anticipated WWE 2K14. Following the footsteps of recent games, which have focused more on nostalgia than on the present-day product, the roster so-far released – which apparently accounts for around half of the final roster – relates largely to the 30 Years of WrestleMania mode, a campaign mode which will allow players to fight through over 45 classic WrestleMania matches.
However, we haven’t seen it all yet. We know that the likes of Stephanie McMahon and Bruno Sammartino are also in the game, causing us to beg the question – which other WWE stars, namely legends, would we love to see make an appearance in WWE 2K14? Whether they’ve appeared in games before or not, this ambitious mode wouldn’t be the same without these 10 unforgettable faces…

I’m here live in Los Angeles for the SummerSlam weekend of festivities, and although at time of writing we’re still several hours away from the big show itself the weekend has been anything but short of big news and even controversies heading into the WWE’s second biggest pay per view of the year. As has become the tradition before some of the WWE pay per views this weekend started with WWE SummerSlam Fan Axxess, an event which allows members of the WWE Universe to get up close to some of the Divas and Superstars of the WWE, with highlights being in ring matches from the stars of Nxt and in ring promos from the likes of Paul Heyman.
One of standards of the SummerSlam Axxess event is the focus and promotional highlighting of the new WWE games that come out each year, with Jim Ross and Jerry...

We are now one week away from the 29th edition of Wrestlemania – the biggest and grandest PPV in the history of the wrestling industry. For almost three decades Wrestlemania has been the scene of some of wrestling’s greatest feuds and most memorable moments. Stars have been made and careers etched in the annals of time. But as big as it has become the original Wrestlemania was far from being “The Grandest Stage of ‘em all” as it has become know. It wasn’t even given full national PPV exposure! Unbelievable when you think of how huge the event is today.
For those of you that are new to WWE or perhaps weren’t around when it all began What Culture show’s its age and goes back to 1985 to bring you a full run down of all 28 previous Wrestlemanias. If this doesn’t get you in the mood for...

We learned a lot coming out of the Elimination chamber PPV this past weekend. Firstly we learned that The Rock would lead the company into Wrestlemania as its champion. We learned that Antonio Cesaro is the best ‘foreign import’ into WWE in years and that Jbl is this generation’s Jess Ventura in terms of his raw and honest commentary. We also learned that there is Huge potential for a feud between Sheamus and The Shield’s Roman Reigns. But perhaps one thing you might have overlooked – which is no easy task – is that the tag team of Brodus Clay and Tensai has the potential to be the future of WWE’s tag team division.
Throughout the history of pro wrestling oddball partnerships have frequently been the saviours of the tag team division when it’s been in need of freshening up. The current tag team champions Daniel Bryan and...

On the final day of the I’ll Be Your Mirror festival, there were a few repeat performers, to the delight of many fans.
–Shellac gave a surprise encore show at Asbury Lanes bowling alley – to watch them, Speakeasy stood in the gutter. The sound and energy was much more inviting in such a small venue – Steve Albini played his guitar practically in the middle of the crowd.
–Jeff Mangum held another private concert in a half-filled Paramount Theatre (to see him,...

On Mon. Jan. 4, Hulkamania goes to war with the WWE. We've seen Hulk Hogan take on Andre the Giant, King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd, several factions of the Nwo, but never before have we seen Hogan take on an entire Wrestling organization. The Hulkster originally announced his partnership with Tna iMPACT on Spike TV last Fall. On Jan. 4, we'll see exactly what that partnership will mean to the world of Wrestling, when Tna goes head-to-head with WWE Monday Night Raw on USA Network. TV viewership isn't the only thing that Tna will be trying to wrestle from the WWE. Tna and Southpeak Games will be unveiling their new Tna iMPACT title for the Nintendo DS. That's right, Hulkamania is going portable. Hulk Hogan's return to the ring as Hollywood Hogan, during the post WWE-wcw era, wasn't one of the most stellar returns. However, seeing him come back...
