Filmmaker James Mangold is set to direct "Captain Nemo," an origin story based on Jules Verne's classic nautical tale "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" at Disney Pictures.
Sebastian Gutierrez ("Hotel Noir," "The Eye") penned the latest draft, he and Mangold taking over for Andrew Kevin Walker and David Fincher respectively who were both previously attached to the project and were developing it before departing a few years back.
Disney, which previously adapted the property into the 1954 film starring James Mason and Kirk Douglas, will develop the new film along the lines of their other live-action reinventions of late such as "Maleficent" and "Alice in Wonderland," offering a different version of a classic story - in this case a full on prequel in which we see how Nemo created his battle submersible The Nautilus.

James Mangold’s hotly-anticipated and indeed R-rated Wolverine sequel has been making waves of late, though Deadline reports that Mangold will really be hitting the high seas further down the line with Disney’s long-gestating maritime adventure, Captain Nemo.
Pitched as an origins tale to H.G. Wells’ 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the reboot is currently situated in pre-production where Sebastian Gutierrez (Hotel Noir, The Eye) is busy whipping a script into shape. As one of the studio’s first live-action feature films, Leagues holds a tremendous amount of historical value for the House of Mouse. Originally released in 1954, Captain Nemo was the core anti-hero of the swashbuckling epic, and Disney is now hoping to weave a feature film out of Jules Verne’s story – one centering on the captain as he creates the Nautilus warship.

Onward to the sea! Deadline is reporting that director Bryan Singer is the latest to push forward on the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea movie. 20th Century Fox is working on this remake, and they've been developing it for a long time. For years, David Fincher was working on a remake, and McG was attached early on with Will Smith as Captain Nemo. The report says that Singer, having finished worked on X-Men: Apocalypse, is "moving toward a fall production start [on 20,000 Leagues], and Singer will begin casting, full speed ahead." No more delays or problems? Will this actually go into production? It seems the answer is yes, Singer is even credited on the story for the new movie being co-written by Rick Sordelet & Dan Studney. Here's the quote directly from Bryan Singer published over on Deadline, talking about his excitement: "I'm incredibly excited to be working with my friends at Fox, with...

Last year, director Bryan Singer announced that he would be directing a big screen adaptation of Jules Verne's 1868 novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. This is been a dream project of his, and now he's set to shoot the film this fall. He previously said:
"It's my 50th birthday (ouch), and I just put the finishing touches on the script for my next film. A story I've wanted to retell since childhood. I promise this will be an epic and emotional adventure for all ages! An adventure very dear to my heart."
I really hope that Singer does bring us something epic. It's exciting that he's going to be able to do this, but I would have much rather seen David Fincher's version. Whenever Singer steps away from the X-Men franchise to do something else, you never know if those films are going to be good or not. Superman Returns...

It's definite: 20th Century Fox is stumping up to make 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea with X-Men helmer Bryan Singer.
Bryan Singer is currently deep in post-production on this summer’s eagerly-awaited X-Men: Apocalypse. It’s the fourth X-Men film he’s directed, and he’s said before that he’s likely to stay involved in the franchise going forward.
However, he’d also been interested in directing a big screen version of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. And that’s the project that’s now come together, and is to be his next movie.
20th Century Fox has inked a deal to make the film with Singer, based of course on the Jules Verne novel. Rick Sordelet and Dan Studney have penned the screenplay, and production is set to begin this autumn.
Our guess is that a 2018 release date is likely, but that hasn’t been confirmed. More...

Bryan Singer will take a break from X-Men to direct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

"I promise this will be an epic and emotional adventure for all ages! An adventure very dear to my heart," Singer wrote. "Not abandoning the X-Men universe. Very excited about X-Men: Apocalypse and beyond."
Singer co-wrote the script for the film with Rick Sordelet and Dan Studney. Verne's classic novel was originally published in 1870 and forms a loose trilogy with In Search of the Castaways and Around the Moon.
A new 20,000 Leagues has been in the works for some time, with directors as diverse as David Fincher and McG circling the remake.

Bryan Singer promises he's not finished with the X-Men universe - but next up, it's a bit of Jules Verne...
Director Bryan Singer has hinted that his forthcoming X-Men movie, X-Men: Apocalypse, will round out the trilogy of films that kicked off with X-Men: First Class. Singer jumped aboard Apocalypse straight after making X-Men: Days Of Future Past, and so he would presumably have first choice at doing whatever X-Men film would follow.
But instead, he’s taking a different path. Singer is set to bring an adaptation of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea to the big screen. This is a project that both McG and David Fincher have previously worked on, but it’s Singer who’s managed to get it through the Hollywood system.
According to the post Singer added to Instagram, the screenplay for his take on 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea has come from Dan Studney and Rick Sordelet.

After he takes on the X-Men, this director is headed deep underwater.
Following his work on X-Men: Apocalypse, director Bryan Singer will be moving to an adaptation that has long been in the works — 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Singer has directed four X-Men films, including the latest two, and also a reboot of Superman.
Singer unveiled the news in an Instagram post, The Wrap reports. They added that while Singer has a strong relationship with Fox after working on the X-Men films, they currently are not financing the adaptation of the Jules Verne novel.
This isn’t the first time someone has tried to make this into a recent movie. David Fincher was long hoping to create an adaptation for Disney with Brad Pitt involved for some time in the lead role. That attempt died to alleged budget reasons and it seems like this is a completely different project.

According to Bryan Singer's Instagram, your No. 1 source for Bryan Singer news, the X-Men director's next film is a retelling of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which he promises will be "an epic and emotional adventure for all ages!" (Hmmm.) Singer has a completed script — or, at the very least, a good-looking title page — from Rick Sordelet and Dan Studney, and has reportedly been shopping the project to Fox. Because this is Hollywood, Singer's version is the second adaptation of 20,000 Leagues floating around Hollywood; there's also a David Fincher version for Disney that's been lurking in the development depths for years. It helps that Verne's story is in the public domain, just like Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, which will also see two different adaptations hit screens in the next few years. Seventy years after J.K. Rowling dies, your great-great-grandchildren are going to go through this...

It's worth remembering that between "X-Men 2: X-Men United" and the "X-Men: Days Of Future Past," the directorial efforts of Bryan Singer were a mixed bag. "Superman Returns" failed to give the franchise new life, opinions were divided on "Valkyrie," and the less said about "Jack The Giant Slayer," the better. But Singer is looking to step outside the world of mutants once again, by taking on a literary classic. "X-Men: Apocalypse" director Bryan Singer has used his own Instagram account today to announce that his next project will be a new adaptation of Jules Verne's classic sci-fi tale "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea".
Various attempts have been made to bring the story back to the big screen in recent years with the likes of David Fincher and McG attached to those now aborted versions.
Rick Sordelet and Dan Studney penned the new film's script based on a story they worked on with Singer based on Verne's novel in which three people's investigations into reports of a sea monster attacking ships leads them to becoming 'guests' of the enigmatic Captain Nemo.
Singer promises: "this will be an epic and emotional adventure for all ages! An adventure very dear to my heart". He also adds that he still intends to stick around the X-Men universe, but is taking a break with this project.

Bryan Singer has never been a filmmaker whose work I've celebrated and adored. It's not that his films aren't entertaining to some degree. However, they always seem to have an issue with pacing, which could just as well be blamed on the writers he chooses to work with. Most of them feel as if they lose their footing in the last act. His latest movie, Jack The Giant Slayer is no different.
A younger farmer named Jack (Nicholas Hoult) accidently drops a magic bean under the floorboard of his shack, resulting in a monstrous beanstalk growing into the heavens and bridging the gap between a world of giants and the Earth. The giants want their land back, which was taken from them in battle centuries before. When a princess is caught by the vengeful behemoths, Jack joins the King's(Ian McShane) rescue team to get her back.

Nicholas Hoult, still on screens with the lukewarm Warm Bodies, returns in this week's slightly warmer Jack the Giant Slayer, directed by Bryan Singer. Written by Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After), Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, which Singer also directed) and Dan Studney, the movie is an enjoyable but largely forgettable reimagining of "Jack and the Beanstalk."
I don't want to appear too negative, as I did enjoy most of the film's 114-minute run time, but nothing here was as impressive as what ABC has already given us in the TV series Once Upon a Time. Hoult does justice to a role that is perhaps not worthy of his talents, joined by Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci and Ian McShane all playing to their individual strengths. (I confess it was difficult not to imagine McShane loosing a storm of profanity once or twice, but this is a family film.) The effects...

Chicago – The trend of taking ancient fairy tales – “Hanzel and Gretel” and “Snow White,” for example – and converting them into computer generated mega-pictures is peculiar, and glaringly profitable (no “rights” to buy). The latest, “Jack and the Giant Slayer,” has some fun up the beanstalk again.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
This is an okay adaptation, occasionally more interesting than expected, yet the choppy story is presented not for telling-the-tale purposes, but more for the indulgent use of the eye-popping computer creations. The word “computer” is used as a descriptive, only because the human cast is so much smaller against it all, both physically next to the pixel-rendered giants and metaphorically as their role seems secondary to the showier landscape of see-what-we-can-do-now. Even though everything seems to be happening spectacularly on screen, the film is oddly flat in several places, which points toward its reliance of green screen effects over the connective intimacy that the best fairy tales have.

Jack may kill at the box office, but Giant Slayer lacks magic. So much about director Bryan Singer’s CGI-heavy adventure Jack the Giant Slayer is familiar. There are magic beans that sprout into a sky-high stalk once they get wet. A brave farmhand named Jack (Nicholas Hoult) climbs the stalk and comes face-to-face with the race of giants who reside in a magical land above the clouds. True to the needs of a Hollywood blockbuster adventure, screenwriters Darren Lemke, who co-wrote Shrek Forever After, Christopher McQuarrie, Dan Studney and David Dobkin keep the trademark ‘Fee Fi Fo Fum’ but switch out familiar staples from the longstanding British folk tale like the magic harp and a hen that lays golden eggs with a pretty princess named Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson) who’s trapped atop the beanstalk, royal soldiers who set out to save her (Ewan McGregor, Eddie Marsan) and her conniving...

Perhaps it’s fitting that a literal tug of war is pivotal in Jack the Giant Slayer, a large-scale blockbuster retelling of the famous fairy tale about Jack and the magical beanstalk. The film itself appears to represent a creative tug of war, a battle of wills between creativity and commerce. On the one hand, it’s a product of a crass decision to fashion some would-be epic out of a familiar story in the public domain. On the other hand, it has elements of a cheeky throwback to the adventure films in the days where Errol Flynn ruled. With these options warring with each other, sometimes in the same scene, Jack the Giant Slayer is a sometimes charming, sometimes stagnant CGI-infused action film.

This weekend offers up a buffet of films in various genres, with Jack the Giant Slayer taking aim at the spot from 3,525 theaters for Warner Bros. Pictures. The fantasy adventure brings back X-Men helmer Bryan Singer, directing from the script by Jack Reacher's Christopher McQuarrie as well as Dan Studney and Darren Lemke. We weren't impressed with the film, slapping it with a below average rating of 2/5 in our review. That said, Rottentomatoes.com critics have it at 60% at this time. Nicholas Hoult, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy, Ian McShane, Ewen Bremner, Eddie Marsan, Eleanor Tomlinson, Ralph Brown, Andrew Brooke and Ben Daniels star. Relativity Media sends out their teen and younf adult-skewering 21 and Over comedy into 2,700 theaters. The film from The Hangover team of Jon Lucas and Scott Moore has, and unsurprisingly-enough, been hammered by critics thus far. Starring are Miles Teller, Justin Chon, Skylar Astin, Sarah Wright,...

Jack the Giant Slayer serves as an example of today's Hollywood, a festival of computer graphics waging war in 3-D environments leaving us very little to judge or digest. By the time it's over we can only hope the performances have in some way managed to help us believe the world we're seeing on screen and the effects aren't so intrusive that some semblance of a story remains. Topping it off, the stories themselves are typically so small the hope is the effects will wow you into acceptance. For some audiences this works, for others they're left to feel as if they're simply watching pixels move around the screen while a series of noises bombard their ears. In such cases all a filmmaker can seemingly hope for is to straddle the middle ground and hope there's just enough story to hold the film together, just enough "wow factor" to sate...

-- A big-budget, effects-laden, 3-D retelling of the Jack and the Beanstalk legend may seem like the unlikeliest pairing yet of director Bryan Singer and writer Christopher McQuarrie, but "Jack the Giant Slayer" ends up being smart, thrilling and a whole lot of fun.
Singer and McQuarrie's collaborations include, most famously, the twisty crime mystery "The Usual Suspects" (which earned McQuarrie an original-screenplay Oscar) and the Hitler assassination drama "Valkyrie," featuring an eye patch-wearing Tom Cruise. They've sort of been all over the place together over the past couple decades – why not reinterpret a classic fairy tale? This time, the screenwriter is aided by Darren Lemke and Dan Studney; nevertheless there remains a sense of both briskness and substance.
"Jack the Giant Slayer" is cheeky without being too obnoxiously cutesy. While the look of it is medieval, the vibe seems more current, but it's not so anachronistic as to be...

Hollywood’s race to bring fairy tales to the big screen over the last few years hasn’t had the best results, at least creatively. While “Alice In Wonderland” made a still unbelievable $1 billion worldwide, it simply wasn’t good, and subsequent efforts like “Red Riding Hood,” “Mirror Mirror,” and “Snow White & The Huntsman” brought high concepts and diminished returns. Part of the problem has been an issue of approach, with fairy tale films either choosing to aim for kids, or go dark for tweens, with very little middleground. But that’s a problem screenwriters Christohper McQuarrie, Darren Lemke, and Dan Studney solve with “Jack The Giant Slayer,” a movie that aims for that soft, Mor mainstream audience, but takes its source material and executes its modest ambitions into a satisfying big screen adventure. But, it doesn’t start off well. Delayed from release last summer to...

It has been five years since Bryan Singer's last directorial effort, "Valkyrie." That film -- a modest success at the domestic box office (and an even larger one overseas) -- was a reclamation project, of sorts, for both its couch-jumping star, Tom Cruise, and Singer, who was looking to rebound after the disappointing box office tally of 2006's "Superman Returns." But, something even more important may have come out of the production of "Valkyrie": Bryan Singer's Twitter account, of all things.
If you follow Singer's Twitter feed, you'll notice that he's busy promoting his new film, "Jack the Giant Slayer" (which opens this Friday) like any filmmaker with a Twitter account would be doing. But he's also kind of revolutionizing the way a filmmaker can use the social media platform: by bypassing the usual trade outlets and tweeting the casting news of his next film, "X-Men: Days of Future Past,...

This is a fairly busy weekend especially in major cities where roughly 15 limited releases will try to compete with four wide releases, which are trying to take advantage of the success of previous March hits like 300 , Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and last year's The Hunger Games and Dr. Seuss' The Lorax . With last weekend being a bit of a dud between the weaker movies and the Oscars on Sunday, we expect moviegoers to be out in force the next few weekends. Jack the Giant Slayer will be hitting the big screen in the Us this Friday, and all signs suggest Bryan Singer’s latest blockbuster will be racking up big numbers at the box office over the coming weekend.
Warner Bros. have done a strong job of promoting the film in recent months. And Nicholas Hoult’s box office-topping performance in Warm Bodies last month can only have helped pique interest for Jack the Giant Slayer.
We saw a great new TV spot land yesterday, along with a recent new poster. And following them up comes a new 60-second UK TV spot, promising an epic, action-filled blockbuster adventure.

Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Slayer has just a few more days before it lands on the big screen, and we’re looking forward to seeing how it fares at the Us box office this weekend.
Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class, Warm Bodies) topped the box office in the States last month with the release of Warm Bodies. And I’m hoping he’ll be doing the same thing again with Jack the Giant Slayer, further cementing his status as a rising star with a lead role in a blockbuster of this size.
Warner Bros. have recently released a new trailer along with a new UK poster. And now they’ve debuted the latest TV spot, giving us a look at the epic action we have coming our way very soon.
