Wanted to become a zoologist, but, finding work opportunities scarce, decided to study photography instead. Suschitzsky eventually graduated from the Höhere Graphische Bundes-Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (School of Design and Graphic Arts) in Vienna. A lifelong passion for photographing animals led, in 1956, to his supplying the photographs for the book The Kingdom of the Beasts by Julian Huxley.
