Robert Redford will take on the assassination of Abraham Lincoln when he directs The Conspirator. The film will explore the role of Mary Surratt in the assassination plot. Surratt ran the Washington D.C. boarding house where the conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln was hatched. She was a sympathizer with the Confederate cause who would be tried, convicted and hanged for her role in the murder of Lincoln. Surratt had the distinction of being the first woman executed by the federal government. She always claimed to be an innocent bystander who simply let the group of conspirators rent a room. The conspirators were of course led by actor turned assassin John Wilkes Booth. The film hasn’t cast the role of Mary Surratt. Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster, Signorney Weaver, and just about any actress over forty is going to be vying for the role. James McAvoy’s name is coming up for a lead but no indication what...

Anyone who's read James Swanson's thrilling Manhunt or Doris Kearns Goodwin's Team of Rivals has envisioned who might play Abraham Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth in a movie adaptation and been tantalized by simmering in-development projects involving Steven Spielberg and Liam Neeson or Harrison Ford. But perhaps news of Robert Redford's Lincoln-assassination film, The Conspirator, will finally resurrect such colorful historical characters for the screen. Though the film is primarily about Mary Surratt, who was hanged for her participation in the assassination, Booth is undeniably the killer role. Remember, Booth was a famous actor in his own time who single-handedly impacted history. We're talking about a murderer who delayed his escape from Ford Theatre so he could deliver one final theatrical line of dialogue: "Sic semper tyrannis." It's too surreal to completely fathom a contemporary comparison. Buried in a Risky Business Blog scoop about Redford's project, which hopes to shoot this fall,...

THR's RiskyBizBlog reports that Robert Redford will direct The Conspirator, a film about Mary Surratt, said to be an accomplice of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth. While this movie is a far cry from Steven Spielberg's intended biopic about the President, nonetheless it is a bit surprising to hear about another major director taking on a project so close to Lincoln when Spielberg isn't yet able to get his own financed. You might have read about Surratt in Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase For Lincoln's Killer, by James Swanson, but this isn't an adaptation of that book. (There is another film project, by HBO and Walden Media, that might adapt that directly.) James Solomon wrote this script, and while the article doesn't mention his sources, chances are the screenplay is drawn at least in part from Kate Clifford Lawson's book The Assassin's Accomplice: Mary Surratt and the Plot to Kill Abraham Lincoln.
