We often joke about sports anime being overly dramatic with internal monologues that put Shakespeare to shame and overexaggerated reactions that have become memes in the community. Still, that doesn’t make shows like Haikyu!! any less fun to watch. As someone who’s not into sports, Haikyu!! is the first sports anime that made me feel like I was a spectator, cheering from the sidelines and watching with bated breath. From that first episode, I was locked in. What makes sports anime a thrill to watch is characters’ motivations. Not only do we see characters grow but they also come up with the hardest-hitting quotes that should be framed and hung up. Haikyu!! is a gold mine of inspirational quotes, so believe me, I’d include every single one if I could. These, however, are some of the best quotes that resonate with many — myself included — and are a...

Mayumi Tanaka, the voice actor of Monkey D. Luffy, the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece, might have found the perfect replacement who can take over her role as Luffy. Tanaka has been voicing Luffy for almost thirty years, and she has done a great job portraying the character over the years.
Luffy in One Piece
However, as she is getting old and the series is still a little far away from the conclusion, the creators might have to find someone else who could do justice to the character of Luffy. This has also become a major concern for Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece. Oda never imagined that the series would go on for so long.
In an interview, Oda talked about how Masako Nozawa, the character who voiced Dr. Kureha in One Piece, offered to take Tanaka’s role as Luffy’s voice actor in One Piece.

Black Butler , created by Yana Toboso, is a dark, supernatural story full of twists, turns and one hell of a butler . Black Butler centers on Ciel Phantomhive and his quest for revenge after surviving the tragic murder of his family. With the dashing and demonic butler, Sebastian Michaelis, now in his service, the series manages to be humorous and devastating at the same time. The anime adaptation of the manga started back in 2008 and had multiple seasons, several OVAs and a theatrical movie. While the manga continued, the anime didn't have another release since that movie in 2017 ( Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic ). In the overwhelming plethora of yakuza movies that were produced from the Japanese movie industry, we have seen movies that portray the gangsters as heroic, as losers, or as they actually are, in a rather realistically dramatic fashion that has become more prevalent during the latest years. It is very rare, however, to watch a film of the category where the protagonist is a rather cunning coward, who spends all his energy trying to avoid becoming part of the action. This is exactly what happens in “Like a Rolling Stone” however, a film that also moves into drama/erotic paths and managed to win a plethora of local awards, mostly for the direction and the main protagonist, Eiji Okuda.

Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece has had many opening theme songs that have helped the series grow hugely. But none of the theme songs compare to the first one that introduced the One Piece story to the world. The song marked the beginning of the East Blue Saga in One Piece and also brought a lot of fame and popularity to the singer Kitadani. And now Kitadani has returned to the One Piece world after almost 25 years with another banger for the Egghead Island arc.

In the previous episode of Tokyo Vice, season 2, Ishida took his last breath after getting fatally shot by two assassins. Tozawa became a suspect, but he voluntarily showed up at the Tokyo Pd and showed Detective Nagata a photo of him with the other Yakuza members in a meeting during the time when Ishida’s murder took place. Samantha, however, confided in Jake, telling him about the assassins with red-eyed tattoos on their wrists. Jake did some digging and informed Katagiri about the tattoos. Jake faced a troubling situation at his office when Eimi allowed Kurihara to publish an article on Samantha, accusing her of Ishida’s murder. Jake took a few days off and flew back home to Missouri. Part of the beauty of the "Star Wars" universe is how big and populated it is. Not only did the original trilogy deliver groundbreaking visual effects, but George Lucas wrote enough backstory and worldbuilding while working on the first film to sustain decades' worth of "Star Wars" movies. That worldbuilding also resulted in hundreds of smaller background characters that became overnight fan favorites once the movies — and the merchandise — started arriving. Even the most inconsequential one-off characters suddenly became beloved by audiences despite there being little to no official information available about them — at least, until we got entire novels and books devoted to every Glup Shitto and Max Rebo out there.
Of course, not every character gets that treatment. In fact, there is one character we only know the name of because the actor decided to take matters into his own hands during shooting — Quarsh Panaka. You remember that guy,...

Robert Zemeckis' blockbuster "Back to the Future Part II" was released in November 1989, and it expanded on the lore from the first. In the 1984 original, Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) went back in time to the 1950s when his parents were teenagers ... and not terribly interested in each other. To ensure he gets born, Marty has to arrange circumstances so that his mom and dad start dating. In "Part II," Marty is enlisted by Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) to travel to the far-flung future of 2015 to make sure that his kids stay out of legal trouble; this will be easy to do, as Marty's son (also Fox) happens to look just like him.
And, no, hoverboards aren't real. That was a rumor Zemeckis started himself.

When the monster was invented in 1954, Godzilla stood as a symbol of nuclear devastation. Indeed, in March of 1954, shortly before Ishiro Honda's film "Gojira" was made, a group of fishermen aboard the ship Daigo Fukuryu Maru was exposed to radiation from a nearby American nuclear bomb test in the Bikini Atoll. One of the fishermen died of radiation poisoning and their fish were irradiated, causing a public panic about the safety of their food and the effects nuclear fallout may be having on the local fauna. As all cineastes know, Godzilla was an animal mutated by nuclear tests, turning into a nuclear-powered, unstoppable force of destruction. Godzilla echoed the devastation of the nuclear bomb that Japan had suffered at the hands of America. Honda's original "Gojira" is a somber and downbeat film about how weapons of mass destruction will never be done destroying us.

Stories revolving around giant mechanical robots or mechs have existed since the earliest of sci-fi classics, most notably in H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, where Martians used mechanical ‘Tripods’ to lay waste to humanity. In later years, Japan’s obsession with mechs imparted more complex dynamics to the genre, which evolved into narratives concerning the relationship between human beings and sentient robots, culminating in some particular Gundam series and Transformers.
Netflix’s latest release, Mech Cadets, an adaptation of Greg Pak and Takeshi Miyazawa’s Mech Cadets Yu, combines some of the best mech series out there, like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Pacific Rim, to present a vibrant, fresh take on the mech genre. While the lively 3D animation might hook some of the younger generation onto the series, for veteran fans of the genre, it fails to offer anything new or exceptional that hasn’t been done already.

A wooded setting, two characters, and conflicting values are the basis for Manami Ikemoto's clever short film “Hunting Results.” Ikemoto primarily works as an editor and creates films that detail the behind-the-scenes process in filmmaking. Here, he shines as a director in his first major project since his graduation movie, “Bad Trip.” With a low budget and two actors, he explores ideas of evolving perspectives and people who stand by old-fashioned notions.
Hunting Results is screening at Skip City International D-Cinema Festival
In the story, a married couple is out on a hunting trip. The husband, Naotaro, is overbearing and excessively stands by patriarchal values, while the wife, Yuko, is laid back and open-minded. Naotaro is deeply bothered that his daughter, Misako, is gay and takes out his frustrations on his spouse. Yet, Yuko stands up for herself, and the couple's complicated marriage and beliefs are explored in their journey into the woods.

As the Visual Effects Society marks the occasion of its 25th anniversary, the annual Ves Honors ceremony on Friday included celebration along with a call for more diversity and inclusion, as well as a greater effort to achieve a work-life balance amid industry-wide attention on the long work hours kept by many VFX artists under current business models.
Friday evening at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, honorees included three-time Oscar winner and Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter and VFX vet and educator Pam Hogarth.
Hogarth received the Ves Founders Award as well as life Ves membership, and sent a message of community while urging more work toward diversity and inclusion. “The reason we are here is for the community,” she said. “We do this because we love the people around us and the Society. We are so lucky to work with smart,...

This early work of director Daiki Tanaka showcases few of the themes he will later explore in his following feature film “Parallel”, in 2021. Good and evil, trauma and redemption, reality and masks; all these alternate and swap places in a dark and sinister but at the same time aesthetically pleasing duel, in “Filament”.

Yusuke (Soma Fujii) is a teenage boy with a secret he cannot reveal; he can fly. He doesn’t know how that could happen as his parents are long dead and he has no way to know the reasons why he was born like that, but, as amazing as it sounds, at an age when being different from the norm is scary and overwhelming, he hasn’t found the courage to embrace his ability with confidence. In fact, despite his dream of using it to do good to others in an Ultraman-style attire,...

Once upon a time, "Gojira" was a creature of the atomic bomb. This is no longer the case. Through years of evolution, "Gojira" drifted from nuclear anxieties. Its successors developed their own iconography: moths, plants, three-headed dragons. In the process, these monsters became inhabitants of a fantasy world drifting further and further from our own. This does not mean that new kaiju movies are bankrupt per se. The Heisei "Gamera" films of the 1990s are genre films, concerned only with being the best giant monster movies they can be. Yet they are some of the best films of their era regardless, with their own memorable characters and ideas. 2016's "Shin Gojira" reclaimed its titular monster as a political metaphor. Rather than drive audiences away, it instead became a major critical and commercial success in Japan. Kaiju still have life in them yet.
Even so, the original "Gojira" stands alone in film history.

Despite having graduated from the prestigious Tokyo University, Kazuhiko is unemployed and living with his parents without any plans for the future, in a lifestyle that could be easily described as that of a hikikomori. As the story begins, however, two events change his life completely, in rather unexpected ways. One day, he stumbles upon a former classmate, Yuri Sojima, who, opposite of him, is socially adept, cheerful, and even more surprisingly, seems to like him.

Kenji Mizoguchi was a brilliant and influential filmmaker. Besides his movies being visual marvels, he was a master of emotional storytelling. The projects of Mizoguchi were also vey much ahead of their time, especially regarding the themes and issues they often tackled. Much of the artist’s work is character studies of women forced into suffering and pushing through struggles in Japanese society. He frequently worked with brilliant actress Kinuyo Tanaka who starred in a substantial amount of his filmography. Gender inequality and sexism in Japan date far back in history and remain an issue there to this day. An advocate of equality, Mizoguchi would be one of the first Japanese directors to raise awareness of these issues while tearing down the facade that Japanese society is perfect, all while giving a voice to those forced to comply with social injustices. Such matters are brought to the forefront in one...
