Having now found their way as a rock band, Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits finds Campbell and The Dirty Knobs in a place where they are solely focused on creating “great songs” with “depth in the lyrics and chords,” the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers co-founder said in a statement.

In 1974, Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, and the rest of their band Mudcrutch entered Leon Russell’s the Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to record their first demo tape with producer Denny Cordell. It was a crucial moment that led to the formation of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers two years later. In late April of this year, Campbell returned to the studio for the first time in 50 years.

Dolly Parton honored Tom Petty with a gorgeous cover of his 1985 song, “Southern Accents,” which will appear on the upcoming tribute compilation Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty.
“Southern Accents” is a tender ballad about Southern roots and a down-on-his luck Florida orange-picker. Parton stays faithful to the original, adding her own country twang, and juicing the poignancy further with a music video filled with old archival footage of Petty.
“I was fortunate enough to get to know Tom over the years,” Parton said in a statement.

Ringo Starr recorded a song from one of the most important songwriters of the 1980s and 1990s. He said it would be a great New Year’s anthem. Despite this, the tune never mentions the holiday. His track begs to be compared to a George Harrison song with a similar theme.
Ringo Starr’s New Year’s song was written by someone who wrote hits for Cher and others
Diane Warren is a songwriter who has worked on hits such as Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time,” Ace of Base’s “Don’t Turn Around,” and Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” During a 2021 interview with Variety, Ringo discussed working with Warren. “I asked Diane Warren for a song, and she sent over ‘Here’s to the Nights,'” he said. “Of course, she sent it over in the key of F-demented, and I was like,...

Around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday night, a shadowy group of figures walked onto the Farm Aid stage at the Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana. This was supposed to be the moment where Wille Nelson wrapped up the night, but there was no sign of the Red Headed Stranger or his band. Instead, another act was plugging in instruments on the darkened stage. There was no announcement of any kind, and the large screens on both sides of the stage went completely blank for the first time all day.

On Stevie Nicks’ debut solo album, Bella Donna, she turned a Tom Petty song into a hit duet. Nicks’ version of the song sounded little like Petty’s, and he felt a bit betrayed when he heard it. Several years later, though, he had a chance to get back at her. When Nicks struggled to record a song, Petty stepped in and took it. She was disappointed, but she understood.

In 1981, Stevie Nicks kickstarted her solo career by collaborating with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.” The song peaked at No. 3 in the United States and set her up for the strongest solo career of any of her Fleetwood Mac bandmates. It was also a success for Petty and the Heartbreakers, but he didn’t initially see it this way. It sounded completely different from his initial vision of it.

Eddie Vedder has always seemed like a singer inextricably bound to his band. Since the beginnings of Pearl Jam, he has flexed his warm baritone with an intensity or a sensitivity that perfectly matched his fellow musicians’ loose fury and anxious jamming; Vedder’s voice depends on Pearl Jam’s music, and their songs demand his voice. Whenever he has ventured into the wilds of a solo career, he has done so in the least Pearl Jam-y ways possible, whether it was the folkie mandolin musings of “Rise” or the beach-fire serenades of Ukulele Songs.

Tom Petty’s 1994 album “Wildflowers,” the subject of the SXSW documentary “Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free,” was in some ways one of the veteran rocker’s most casual albums. Made with producer Rick Rubin after a pair of bigger-sounding, more meticulously arranged albums with Jeff Lynne, “Wildflowers” has a low-key, ramshackle air to it, with its rough-hewn rocker songs tossed together with loose shuffles and acoustic ballads that actually have more going on than you realize.
There’s an intimacy and a melancholy to it, as befits a group of songs written by a guy whose state in life was summed up in the couplet that opened “To Find a Friend”: “In the middle of his life/He left his wife.”
“Wildflowers” was a subtle album whose impact slowly grew over time; nothing about it insisted that it should be taken as a big statement. But a recent boxed set,...

There are times when it is still hard to fathom that Tom Petty is gone. Turn on his SiriusXM station, and there is a good chance you’ll hear Petty’s inimitable drawl on his “Buried Treasures” program, sounding vivid and cheerful. Recorded work is still being released, including last year’s massive, 25-song version of his classic album Wildflowers. And now comes Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free, a vivid, compelling documentary chronicling the creation of that aforementioned album. As the film’s opening explains, in early 2020 a collection of 16mm film was discovered in the Petty archive, all shot between 1993-95 by filmographer Martyn Atkins. Never before released, the footage offers a unique view inside the process of making a masterpiece.

Margo Price once danced on a table at a Nashville greasy spoon, and Brittany Howard has the photos to prove it. “Me and Margo go way back,” says Howard, recalling the period when she first came to Nashville, in 2011. Back in those days, Price was the singer in a popular bar band, Buffalo Clover, and Howard was working on the Alabama Shakes’ first album, Boys & Girls. “We would stay up all night, going to shows, drinking, and talking about our dreams,” says Howard.

Chris Stapleton debuted the hard-charging “Arkansas” last year on his All-American Road Show Tour, often performing the song live with guests Brothers Osborne. On Friday, Stapleton released the studio version of the track, written with Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell. It’ll appear on Stapleton’s upcoming album Starting Over.
Recorded with his core band of drummer Derek Mixon, bassist J.T. Cure, and producer Dave Cobb, the LP version of “Arkansas” also includes Campbell on guitar and Benmont Tench on piano. Lyrically, it’s a rollicking travelogue, with Stapleton documenting a...

Chris Stapleton evokes the chilly atmosphere of late-Nineties Radiohead with “Cold,” the latest release from his new album Starting Over. The follow-up to Stapleton’s two-part From A Room series, Starting Over will be released November 13th.
Framed by an angular minor-key piano part played by the Heartbreakers’ Benmont Tench, “Cold” initially feels closer to “Karma Police” than Stapleton’s signature brand of earthy soul-country. Of course, when Stapleton opens his mouth, it’s more rooted to his past work than Thom Yorke’s, particularly with lyrics that address a distant,...

During the last week of his life, Tom Petty grew unusually wistful. Home after a tour with the Heartbreakers, he had his wife, Dana, call up his rarely seen 2002 “Fun in the Desert” video, in which he tooled around a barren landscape on a mini-motorcycle, then asked her to track down a high school girlfriend on social media. “He hated Facebook,” Dana Petty recalls. “But he got super-nostalgic. Looking back, it’s very strange.”

On October 10th, Apple will perform and take part in conversation with the magazine’s staff writer Emily Nussbaum, who won a Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 2016. Chris Stapleton looks ahead to a brighter future in the new song “Starting Over,” the title track to his fourth studio album, due November 13th.
“Well, the road rolls out like a welcome mat/to a better place than the one we’re at,” he sings in the shuffling number, written with his frequent collaborator Mike Henderson. Though completed before everyday life was upended by the pandemic, “Starting Over” speaks to our moment of unrest and uncertainty: “This might not be an easy time/there’s rivers to cross and...

Tom Petty’s estate has shared a previously unheard song, “There Goes Angela (Dream Away),” that was recorded during the Wildflowers sessions.
The only catch is that hearing it requires either having a subscription to Sirius/Xm or successfully completing a five-question quiz on Petty’s website. The quiz shouldn’t be too difficult for Petty fans or anyone with access to Wikipedia.
“There Goes Angela (Dream Away)” is a tender ballad that would have fit seamlessly on Wallflowers. “One day I’ll be back,” Petty sings, “One day I...

Fiona Apple co-wrote “New York Doesn’t Like Your Face,” a hilarious new song for the animated series Central Park.
Written with David Lucky, the song appears in the series finale and was performed by Audra McDonald, who voices the character Ashley. “New York doesn’t like your face/We’ve got to give them something better to embrace,” Ashley sings dramatically to the elderly heiress, Bitsy. “Haven’t you ever wondered, dear, why your staff all carry cans of mace?”

David Crosby had a busy 2020 lined up, with three separate tours, major shows with Phil Lesh, Joe Walsh, and Jason Isbell, and a lot of new music to make. At the moment, Crosby has no idea if any of that is going to happen. “I don’t want to be sitting at home, man,” Crosby says on the phone from his Santa Ynez, California, home. “I’m 78. I only got a few years left. You know that. I don’t want to spend them sitting on my butt. I got...

Swampy Muscle Shoals soul mixes with a funky Seventies color palette in Grace Potter’s splashy new video for “Back to Me.” The latest release from Potter’s second solo disc Daylight, “Back to Me” finds the singer worn-out and threadbare as a relationship unravels, but she’s also resolute about the inevitable conclusion.
Joined on the chorus by Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig from indie pop band Lucius (recently heard on Sheryl Crow’s Threads LP), Potter sings, “All your expectations fall on me, they’re so heavy, baby,...

With her first solo album in five years, Shelby Lynne has put a hint right in the title that it could be her most intimately honest. Out April 17th, Shelby Lynne is prefaced by the release today of “Here I Am,” a stark but hopeful piano ballad accentuated by Lynne’s achingly intense, vulnerable delivery.
“If you get lost I’m strong enough to come and find you,” Lynne sings, “If you forget about me I’ll stay here to tell you that I know … it’s hard to dream in the light of day,...

The first Who album in 13 years opens with a perfectly cynical Pete Townshend lyric: “I don’t care/I know you’re gonna hate this song.” But it’s kind of hard to hate something that feels so familiar. Roger Daltrey sings the lyric and the ones that follow, claiming the song isn’t “new” or “diverse,” with the same anger and conviction as the Who’s earliest music, recorded more than half a century ago, and the melody is almost identical to the opening “I don’t mind” of...

On June 6th, 1980, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers arrived in Hollywood to perform on the short-lived variety show Fridays. Before they launched into the classic “American Girl” from their 1976 self-titled debut, the band played “Shadow of a Doubt (A Complex Kid),” a track from their then-new record Damn the Torpedoes.
In the video above, Petty, dressed in a New Wave–style polka-dot shirt, tears through the song, singing about an unpredictable woman who hates her boss. The rest of the band — guitarist Mike Campbell, drummer Stan Lynch, bassist Ron Blair,...

Dolly Parton’s surprise appearance may have grabbed most of the headlines during this past summer’s Newport Folk Festival, but one of the weekend’s most exciting moments came during the Sunday evening closing set when Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold, the Shins’ James Mercer and Eric Johnson (Fruit Bats) offered a note-by-note rendition of “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” Crosby, Stills & Nash’s 1969 classic.
With an all-star backing band that included Janet Weiss, Jason Isbell, Benmont Tench, John Stirratt and Chris Funk, the trio worked their way through the song...

Ringo Starr has organized a mini-Beatles reunion, tapping Paul McCartney for a rendition of John Lennon’s “Grow Old With Me,” which will appear on the musician’s new album, What’s My Name, out October 25th via UMe.
“Grow Old With Me” was one of the last songs Lennon wrote before his death, and the song eventually appeared on his posthumous 1984 album with Yoko Ono, Milk and Honey. Starr said he was inspired to record the song after producer Jack Douglas asked if he’d heard Lennon’s “Bermuda Tapes,...
