The topic of a successful cup run has been so widely talked about around Tyneside that an irritating flock of butterflies are floating around the pit of Newcastle United’s stomach and will only be released when the Magpies’ first XI massacre Northampton Town with extreme prejudice.
Steve McClaren is a brave man if he opts to field a weakened team against Chris Wilder’s side as any hint of the club not taking the competition seriously will result in a public outcry led by thousands of Geordies using the word ‘ambition’ too much.
Northampton finished 12th in the fourth tier last season and will be looking to cancel the Magpies’ takeover of Trafalgar Square for another year. The clubs last faced each other in 1987 when Newcastle managed a 2-1 win in the Fa Cup thanks to goals from Paul Goddard and Andy Thomas.

Britain's Brightest, BBC One's new Saturday night game show, rocketed to a ratings high last night (February 9).
Some 5.15m - a 22.7% share of the available audience - tuned in at 7.15pm as Andy Thomas won the six-week competition.
Hosted by Clare Balding, who acknowledged her move to primetime was a "risk", the programme consistently lost to Tom Daley's Splash! on ITV and has hovered around the four million mark until yesterday.
BBC One's fortunes improved further as the night went on, winning every primetime clash against ITV, which struggled without its popular diving show.
Lottery game show In It to Win It took 5.28m (23.2%) at 8.15pm, after which Casualty topped the night with a splendid 5.59m (25%).
On ITV, meanwhile, Take Me Out and Jonathan Ross slumped to 3.56m (15.6%) and 2.42m (11.2%), although the pair added 378k and 310k on +1.
Elsewhere, BBC Two's Natural World educated 1.62m (7.2%), film Crocodile Dundee II...

Forecasters predict snow and downpours in the coldest start to May in 70 years with grim effect on consumer spending
It was not meant to be like this. A bank holiday weekend with the mere hint of sun sees streams of motorists queuing to enter the Kentish harbour town of Whitstable. But yesterday afternoon the town's car parks were half empty as day trippers stayed away, opting not to brave the icy blasts whipping off the grey North Sea.
People were out walking around the town, but their hands were firmly in their pockets and their heads bowed against the wind. Few were spending money. Quaint cafes by the quayside waited for business; ice-cream kiosks where queues 30 deep have been known were devoid of customers. For many of the town's shopkeepers, dependent on the down-from-London brigade for their livelihoods, the bitter bank holiday weekend was a major setback after weeks of poor weather.
