It had been a minute since Anna Gunn felt the anticipation of an intriguing script hitting her inbox. Understandably, the incomparable writing she received for a combined decade on Deadwood and Breaking Bad set a high bar. But then the Colin Farrell-led Apple TV+ series Sugar came along.
Created by Mark Protosevich and executive produced by Audrey Chon/Simon Kinberg, the neo-noir show ended up being one of a couple recent Breaking Bad reunions for Gunn. Co-heads of Apple TV+ programming, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, served as presidents at Sony Pictures Television when Vince Gilligan walked through their doors with his Breaking Bad pilot script, and on top of having a hand in Gunn joining Sugar, the two executives have been busy recruiting their former Breaking Bad collaborators to their acclaimed streamer, including Gilligan and his still-untitled upcoming series; Jonathan Banks and director-ep Michelle MacLaren for Constellation...

Casting directors typically work offscreen, sifting through dozens, if not hundreds, of self-taped auditions and in-person sessions to find the perfect performers for each pivotal role. But what if the perfect performer is the casting director? What if they’re asked to act on not one, but two Emmy-nominated HBO comedies? What if, rather than sitting behind a desk, they’re asked to sit behind a desk in front of a camera?

Exclusive: In a filmmaking strategy that must have given her a sense of déjà vu when she watched the recent Emmy Awards to see cameras in the home of every nominee, Stephanie Laing has managed to direct Shoot the Rooster, an indie feature based on loss in her own life that she co-wrote with Brad Morris. She accomplished the mission by sending around 23 cameras to the homes of her cast so that they could set up the scenes under her direction and shoot safely as Covid-19 shut down the business. The shoot covered five states and the drama stars Henry Winkler, Margo Martindale, Elsie Fisher, Judy Greer, June Squibb, Casey Wilson, Tim Simons, Sam Richardson, Scott MacArthur, Ann Dowd, Zoe Chao and Billy Magnussen.
The story centers on a family matriarch (Squibb) who wants to reunite her family before she passes. Laing, who produced the film with Alex Saks and Peter Odiorne,...

The 1998 animated Disney’s Mulan introduced many in Western audiences to the legend of a young Chinese woman who disguised herself as a man to fight against an invading army. But the legend of Mulan had been around a lot longer—the first transcription of the story appears in the sixth century, and the earliest film version appeared in 1927. If you just can’t get enough of Mulan, check out these other versions of her story.
The Ballad of Mulan (1998)
While this picture book is geared at a young audience, it’s notable because it includes the text of one of the early poem versions in the untranslated Chinese, alongside a prose translation by author-illustrator Song Nan Zhang. It also came out the same year as Disney’s animated feature, which means young readers could have picked it up around the same time they saw the film on the big screen.

The striking red garments and white bonnets in “The Handmaid’s Tale” have become the show’s signature, representing women who have had their human rights stripped away from them. As it turns out, though, the iconic bonnets almost didn’t make it onto the show.
At a “Handmaid’s Tale” panel at the Producers Guild of America’s 2018 Produced By Conference on Saturday, sponsored by Variety, costume designer Ane Crabtree revealed that the costume initially included headscarves because the crew was wary of covering up star Elisabeth Moss‘ face.

After trying out the scarves, though, Crabtree said, “it just felt like any old TV show and I just quietly, without getting approval, made five bonnets, took them to Lizzie [Moss] for our first fitting and I said, ‘I’m going to film you with my iPhone turning your face to the camera’. And because she’s Lizzie and she’s magic incarnate,...

Hulu’s MGM series The Handmaid’s Tale has five episodes left in its 13-episode run, and what continues to amaze Ep/creator Bruce Miller is the relationship between Elisabeth Moss’ Offred and Yvonne Strahovski’s Serena. And before season 2 closes, Handmaiden Offred will have the baby that she’s carrying for Serena and her husband, Commander Fred Waterford.
“It’s the story of one woman who is going to have a baby, and who is going to try and teach this other woman how to be a mother,” said Miller, who remained tight-lipped about season 3, which he’s just commenced writing. Season 2 in the TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian future 1985 novel was always designated to be ‘the season of the mother.’
Miller, who was joined by the series Ep, Warren Littlefield, VP Hulu original content Beatrice Springborn, and Handmaid‘s casting director Sherry Thomas and costume designer Ane Crabtree,...

Are you ready to meet Augustus Ezekiel in "The Walking Dead" Season 7?
Before the Season 6 finale frustrated fans with that cliffhanger, it introduced Morgan to a couple of guys in armor. They looked like characters from The Kingdom, and a new Season 7 casting call appears to confirm that we will be meeting the leader of that survivor community, a guy named Ezekiel.
TVLine confirmed that Twd is casting for someone with the code name Augustus, but even they acknowledged it's really Ezekiel. Spoil the Dead got the full casting call details, showing that the character is meant to be a guest star in Season 7, arriving in Episode 3, and potentially staying on for a "multiple year series option":
The Walking Dead, Episode #703
Episodic
AMC
One Hour
SAG

We’ve all had that moment where we’re hired to kill someone but then fail after embracing our inner thespian in the name of theatrical community and a heartwarming display, right? In the rare case that you haven’t experienced such a turning point, HBO would like to make sure you’ve had the opportunity to witness the transformation. “Barry” will follow a former Marine-turned-hitman who has a change of heart when he meets a ragtag group of actors. Bill Hader, who co-wrote the pilot, will star on and direct the first episode when filming begins this April in Los Angeles. Sharon Bialy and Sherry Thomas will cast the project that has yet to attach anyone other than Hader. It’s getting hard to find new superheroes. NBC is taking that challenge personally and turning the tables on the lore of the superhuman vigilantes. “Powerless,” the latest pilot pickup from the network,...

*Walking Dead comic book and filming spoilers ahead*
"The Walking Dead" Season 6 is entering serious comic book territory. The supersized premiere airs October 11, but the second half of the 16-episode season is currently filming in Georgia. Previously, there were clues to filming at Hilltop Colony --an ally community for Alexandria and a major location in the comic -- and a casting notice for someone that sounded like Paul "Jesus" Monroe, a badass Hilltop resident and future Rick Grimes buddy. The Spoiling Dead Fans has fresh updates on Jesus, who appears to now be filming with the group (no name for the actor yet, though).
And now there's a new casting notice for Episode 11 and beyond that has fans kinda split. Is it for Gregory, the tool who runs Hilltop, or Negan, the much-anticipated next major villain?
First, here's TVLine's tease, on Team Negan:
