Some writer-directors are extremely intentional with their dialogue and don't appreciate it when actors decide to ad-lib, or even toss in their own ideas. But James Gunn is not one of those directors. In fact, he's known for letting his actors riff on various lines and he often throws out his own alternate take ideas in the middle of shooting, which can lead to some serious behind-the-scenes hilarity. Apparently, that's always been his way of doing things, as frequent collaborator and friend Nathan Fillion told IGN all about Gunn's on-the-fly directing style and how it led to some of the best moments in his directorial debut, "Slither," all the way back in 2006.
"Slither" is a gross-out horror-comedy that follows Fillion's character, Sheriff Bill Pardy, as he nurses his long-lasting love for his high-school sweetheart, Starla (Elizabeth Banks), whose husband Grant (Michael Rooker) ends up possessed by a parasitic alien. The two of them,...

Leigh (Bethany Ann Lind) doesn't have much faith in the police. Her father was definitely corrupt (though still works as a cop); her estranged husband is in prison for stealing cars; her son is on probation after getting into a brutal fight with another teen. So when she accidently kills a man who came to her autoshop late one night, she has little reason to trust that the police would believe her when she would tell them she was acting in self-defense. So she decides to cover it up, and that leads her down a increasingly dangerous and psychologically damaging road. Blood on Her Name, the feature debut by Matthew Pope, co-written with Don Thompson, follows Leigh as she tries to keep house and family...

I was attending The Pratt Institute and needed all the bank I could get. Pratt’s one of the world’s great art schools and cheap it was not. I had to come up with most of the tuition because no one talked to me about how financial aid went away if grades fall below a C.
I was a poor black kid from the projects talks like that rarely happen in inner cities. Those lucky enough to raise above our assigned station in life have to fend for ourselves. Our talks revolve around staying away from drugs, gangs, and cops.
American families middle class or above think nothing of seemingly little things like dad or mom talking to them at dinner about their college life.

As I mentioned in a previous column, I’ve been on a Rex Stout/Nero Wolfe reading/re-reading jag as of late and have been enjoying it greatly. As other commentators have noted, the pleasure in the Nero Wolfe novels is not so much the plots, which have been noted as serviceable, but in the characters, especially the rotund and eccentric genius, Nero Wolfe, and his wise cracking legman and assistant, Archie Goodwin.
(Sidenote: when I first met the late and great comic book writer/editor, Also Archie Goodwin, I meant to ask him about Wolfe but decidedly, I think prudently, that he had probably gotten enough of that in his life. End digression.)
Stout had written 33 novels and 39 short stories on the pair between 1934 and his death in 1975. After his death, his estate authorized further Wolfe and Goodwin adventures by Robert Goldsborough who has written ten books, one of...

If you’re passionate about Geek Culture, you probably should (1) promote it by bringing new people into the fold, and (2) prune your collection to keep it robust and manageable. I’m typically pretty good at the first and pretty bad at the second. But last weekend I tried something new and I had an experience that was better than expected.
First, a little background. I grew up in Auburn, a small town in New York State’s Finger Lakes region. I was surrounded by about a million Italian relatives, a downtown that could have been the basis for Smallville, and an outstanding library. It was called the Seymour Library and was built around the turn of century by the firm of Carrere and Hastings. You may know them from another one of their works – the New York Public Library.
My mom led us on weekly excursions to return and borrow books.

My wife (now ex) came home to find me wailing like a wounded animal. Seeing this started her crying also, convinced yet another tragedy had taken yet another member of my family.
She was right.
Lots Of Years Earlier…
That was my first day on my first job and I was looking forward to my first paycheck. I’d never had that kind of bank all at once. This was to be a day of firsts, after I’d gotten my scratch; I was going to shop at my first bookstore. The 8th Street Bookstore in New York City to be exact. My visit there would see me purchase my first hard cover book as this was the first time I saw value in one thing as opposed to many things.

Damn, it’s 1963 all over again in Missouri.
The police are using tear gas and billy clubs to control a group of peaceful protestors. All that’s missing is German Shepards and fire hoses but hey, rubber bullets more than make up for that.
I often wonder seriously, once so seriously, someone asked me to “Please stay here,” if I should take a gun and just end me before Lapd does.
The ‘here’ she was referring to was Earth.
Bet that fucked you up.
A bit over a year ago, in a restaurant two drunken white people thought they could use me as a punching bag.
They attacked me.
They hit me.
They were two, I was one.
I defended myself, they punked out.
I was the one arrested.
There is videotape evidence of my innocence.
I took a plea deal on the criminal charge.
W H Y?
Why would...

Moving can be a real pain. Finding that perfect house can be an even bigger inconvenience. Well, if I ever had any sort of informal education from horror movies, I’ve learned two fundamental truths. There’s gonna be trouble if hooking up with a beautiful woman is effortlessly easy, or if you run across a seemingly sweet real estate property at a ridiculously low price. I’ll go a bit further and say that said real estate property is probably going to be a murder house inhabited by a vengeful spirit with some serious emotional baggage. I would almost bet the farm on it.

There are many new and younger fans to the franchise, and perhaps older ones that have forgotten how things go. Back in the day Keaton was anything but a fan favorite to play the role. I've had comments and emails with fans that don't realize this, so we're going to repost this article from 1988 that Batman-On-Film.com posted recently that helps to shed light on things. Remember..fans didn't want Christian Bale..they didn't want Heath Ledger for certain! Until they saw him on the screen and he blew them away with nothing he'd ever done before. Ben Affleck has this very same potential!

Successful documentaries often spring from life's most dramatic events, and one that weaves together personal growth, craft beer and cycling sounds compelling in an especially Austin-centric way. Production begins next month on 1400 Miles, a locally-based project with life-affirming aspirations, and we thought we'd give you a little preview. Full disclosure: senior Slackerwood contributor Debbie Cerda is a producer for this feature-length documentary -- a fact we're happy to share.
Made by the team behind Crafting a Nation (executive producer Courtney Cobb, director Thomas Kolicko), 1400 Miles will follow North by Northwest brewery owner and founder Davis Tucker (pictured above) as he undertakes a 14-day, 1400-mile bike ride to raise awareness for prostate cancer. Traveling with several other "craft beer pioneers" and inspired by Nxnw brewmaster Don Thompson's recovery from the disease, Tucker will bike his way from Austin to Denver beginning in mid-September and end up at the Great American Beer Festival in October.

It must be difficult to be the CEO of McDonald's when even young children are calling out your company's unhealthy offerings.
During the company's annual shareholders meeting, held Thursday (May 23), Don Thompson was asked by a nine-year-old girl named Hannah why the venerable fast food chain didn't offer healthier meal options for kids.
"We don't sell junk food, Hannah," Thompson replied. "My kids also eat McDonald's ... I love to cook, we cook a lot of foods and veggies at home. We serve a lot of foods and veggies at McDonald's and are trying to sell even more with the apples that we introduced into the Happy Meal..."
During the same meeting, Thompson was asked by a doctor to stop marketing to children, prompting the CEO to further defend the company's product.

“There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain.”
– The Beatles, In My Life
As I grow older, I find some underlying conservative strains in me coming out –much as that will surprise many who know me as a flaming leftie. While not totally adverse, I find I’m resistant to change the older I get. I like things as they were. When I periodically go back to my hometown of Chicago, I find some things have changed and some things are just gone. My first reaction generally is “Who told them they could do that?” Even if I haven’t been back to a place in some time, I mildly resent it not being there. I see what is now there overlaid with my memory of what was there. A cognitive double vision, if you will.

We've featured a ton of great art from Matt Ferguson over the years, including The Avengers box set art. You can see some of the other art we've posted of his here. He just has such a cool style, and today we bring you his latest badass creation... a piece of poster art for Iron Man 3.
The illustration turned out awesome! Blurppy.com, who premiered the art, points out that "3 repulsor rays subtly signify the number 3 for the third installment in the Iron Man franchise."
Hopefully Ferguson decides to sell prints of this design because I'd get one! Make sure to check out the artist's website Cakes and Comics to see more of his fantastic work! What do you think of his Iron Man 3 piece?
Thanks to Don Thompson for the tip!

Sunday night's (April 15) episode of AMC's "The Killing" dragged Stan Larsen (Brent Sexton) deeper into his dark relationship with the mob, and aroused suspicions that the crime organization may have ties to the murder of his daughter, Rosie.
Here's a clip, seen first here at Zap2it, of the most talked about scene from the episode, where Stan confronts Polish mob boss, Janek Kovarsky (Don Thompson), demanding answers and receiving merely a threat in return.
For use on external sites w/exclusive video premieres.

AMC's brilliant but glacially paced "The Killing," has just aired its 7th episode, which means it's slightly past the halfway point of the season, and while the prime suspect in the murder of Rosie Larsen has shifted, it's still way too early to identify the killer. But that won't stop us from trying.
If you're not watching "The Killing," do so. It's slow moving, grim, and immensely frustrating, but it's also one of the better shows on television right now, a program that will hopefully reward our patience. It's a nifty whoddunit, a murder-mystery stretched out into 13 episodes so that it's more like a televised novel than "CSI." It takes us not only into the murder investigation, but how it affects the family of the victim, a political campaign that's wrapped up in the investigation, and the private life of Detective Sarah Linden. Each episode covers a day in the investigation,...

For lunch, Denis Weil chills out in the contemporary lounge he created. Reclining in a leather-backed Lipse chair designed by Wolfgang Mezger, he munches a southwestern chicken salad and sips a berry smoothie. The ambiance is foodie chic: hardwood floors, sleek white tables, a wooden-slat ceiling, and tranquil lighting from a low-hanging ceiling lamp.
Weil spritzes a lime over his salad, enjoying the laid-back vibe that lets him focus on the food. "I love this salad,...

Gee, Now That's Really A Shame
This week's news seemed to have an extra helping of gay guys doing dumb and/or self-serving things that, frankly, got on my nerves.
Leading off the idiot parade, it looks like Perez Hilton may have finally gone too far by tweeting out a picture of an apparently pantyless Miley Cyrus exiting a car ala what Britney Spears did some time ago. This could potentially qualify as child porn and, if convicted, Perez (Aka Mario Lavandeira) could actually do some jail time.
Gee. How terrible.
I don't want to revel in the misfortune of someone else, but I'm a firm believer in you reap what you sow and when someone fouls the pop culture waters the way Perez has, well, let's just say I'm not surprised.
I always thought Perez would come to a bad end of some kind thanks to his endless gossipmongering and hateful posts,...

Every year, Beloit College puts together a list of facts regarding the mindset of the class entering college this Fall—the Class of 2013. Their list, as always, is well worth a read, but this is ComicMix, and we’re here to talk about comics, by gum.
So as we get ready to send them off to college, we wondered: what constitutes the comics status quo for them? What’s normal to these kids born in 1991 (he asks, knowing that being born in 1986 puts him in largely the same boat)? So glad you asked.
The guy who did the above strip had already ended his daily strip and retired by the time these freshmen started reading newspapers. There has never been a Miracleman (or Marvelman) comic published in their lifetime. They have no idea who Don Thompson or Carol Kalish were.Gambit has always been on the X-Men.Spider-Man was always married to Mary Jane.
