The New York Times said digital revenue exceeded print for the first time ever for the second quarter ended in June when it added 669,000 net new digital subscriptions.
That included 493,000 net new subscriptions to its core news product and 176,000 to other digital products, like Cooking, Crossword and audio. It ended the quarter with 5.7 million digital only and 6.5 million total subscriptions.
“We’ve proven that it’s possible to create a virtuous circle in which whole-hearted investment in high quality journalism drives deep audience engagement which in turn drives revenue growth and further investment capacity. This is why our newsroom is growing when so many others are being reduced. America and the world need access to great journalism now more than ever and I’m proud that, in these momentous and troubled times, our newsroom has the commitment, the talent and the resources to rise fully to the occasion,” said outgoing...

Meredith Kopit Levien, the COO of the New York Times Co. and a key architect of the media company’s surge in digital subscriptions in recent years, has been named CEO.
The company announced Wednesday that Kopit Levien will succeed Mark Thompson on September 8. At 49, she will be the youngest top executive in the company’s 169-year-old history.
Reports of the move have been circulating for months and the official announcement capped off what publisher A.G. Sulzberger described as a “deliberate” succession planning process.
“It’s the honor of a lifetime to lead The New York Times,” Kopit Levien said in a press release. “I see a big opportunity to expand journalism’s role in the lives of millions more people around the world, and to invest in product and technology innovation that engages our readers and grows our business.”

Exclusive: Internal BBC documents have revealed how the British broadcaster conducts repeated research on its biggest stars and scores how well they are performing with audiences.
So-called BBC “talent reports” were released as part of the corporation’s legal battle with presenter Samira Ahmed, who has taken the BBC to an employment tribunal seeking £693,245 in lost earnings as part of an equal pay dispute.
Ahmed said “it just does not seem fair” that she was paid £440 for hosting an episode Newswatch, while at the same time, male presenter Jeremy Vine took home £3,000 for recording an installment of Points of View.
She argued that both shows, which invite viewer feedback on BBC output, involve similar work and provide audiences with a similar service. The BBC disputes this characterization, arguing that Newswatch is a news show on the “relatively niche” BBC News channel, while Points of View is a BBC One brand...

New York Times CEO Mark Thompson said that he has reservations about Apple’s soon-to-be-released paid subscription news service and is “leery” about the Times’ participation in the service.
“We tend to be quite leery about the idea of almost habituating people to find our journalism somewhere else,” Thompson said in an interview with Reuters on Thursday. “We’re also generically worried about our journalism being scrambled in a kind of Magimix (blender) with everyone else’s journalism.”
Apple is expected to introduce the service at a Silicon Valley event on Monday. Media reports have described the plan as a way to create a “Netflix for News” — signing up hundreds of publishers and allowing users access in return for a single fee. The move is part of a broader plan for the company to compete in the streaming space against already well-established industry leaders like Netflix and Amazon.

Two North Carolina men who attended last year’s disastrous Fyre Festival in the Bahamas were granted $5 million in damages stemming from the event. The pair are the first attendees of the event to obtain a judgement against coproducer Billy McFarland, who has pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud and is currently in jail. The reward was first reported by Vice.
Blogger Seth Crossno and co-plaintiff Mark Thompson filed their lawsuit against McFarland in May 2017. On Thursday, the judgment was granted in absentia after McFarland failed to respond to more than a year’s worth of court proceedings.
The concert, scheduled for April of last year, promised luxury accomodations and celebrity-chef-prepared meals along with a lineup featuring Blink-182, Migos and Disclosure, collapsed before it had even started. Far from the five-star treatment promised by its producers — McFarland and rapper Ja Rule — concertgoers were met with flimsy tents, boxed lunches,...

The publicity material for “Tina — the Tina Turner Musical” actually doesn’t use the phrase “starring Adrienne Warren.” It should. And it will. Hitherto unknown in the U.K., the actress was the Tony-nominated standout in Broadway’s “Shuffle Along,” but Warren’s knockdown performance here not only elevates an otherwise routine bio-musical into a triumph, it’s a slam-dunk for every upcoming awards ceremony.
Putting director Phyllida Lloyd in charge of turning Tina’s life story into a theatrical evening was a smart move. Not only is she a highly regarded director of theater and opera classics from her London/Broadway “Mary Stuart” to her recent Donmar Warehouse/St. Ann’s Warehouse all-female Shakespeare trilogy, she and her designer Mark Thompson created the modern-era trend for jukebox musicals with “Mamma Mia!” – which, 18 years later, is still playing in London. Unfortunately, where she had free fictional rein with Abba’s back-catalog,...
